Here you go. I'd consider these beginner-friendly because they're not focused on tech or politics.

click here for a list of communities that are NOT politics, tech, or meme -related.

Most are currently active (except for the ones with a * which were less active last I checked) Sometimes politics, tech or memes sneak in but they're not the focus.

oooh that was you kek. it was pretty late when I posted last night so my memory must have fallen asleep.

Or maybe just my memory's bad in general, I don't remember if you were the one who told me about the "Lemmy Federation State" web page:

One time when I was a kid, my father borrowed a friend's apartment in another country and we drove there for several days for a vacation. While we were there we made hamburgers and we had buns but didn't get condiments bc we were only going to be there a couple days. Anyway, it was such a novelty to be eating a burger without condiments... I always remember that and associate it with that vacation.

I guess to revive a community:

  • find something to post on a regular basis. e.g. on [email protected] I post a weekly announcement about the upcoming Monsterdon movie viewing (with links and background info); LaurenceWolse posts 2-3 movie overviews a week, and there we have the basis for a moderately active sub.
  • find another couple of people to help you out by posting regularly
  • keep posting on this community's weekly thread and getting advice/inspiration from other posters here

Looks like both your posts came through now, so maybe just another delay like happened to me a couple weeks ago? After the fact, someone told me if I edited the post, it might force it through.

I wouldn't stress about it. Communities don't have to be active all the time. When I remember the Dunder Mifflin (fandom for tv show The Office) sub back on r$ddit, it was always active, but it was the same limited number of arguments and jokes and catch-phrases over and over. It was kinda amusing, but also kinda braindead. Why not just wait until there's a new tour or album or other news?

I had a similar experience with [email protected]. The Japanese tournaments only happen every 2 months, so it's dormant now... instead of trying to "force" discussion, I'm just waiting for a couple more weeks where it'll be back to daily posting for the 15-day tournament. If I came across some awesome news or media I might post it but otherwise I'm not going to stress it.

I suggest you advertise this in [email protected] -- there are a fair number of people there interested in "growing" lemmy who might be interested.

The movies Ghost in the Shell, Tron, and WarGames (which is arguably a techno-thriller) all had a significant impact on my professional take on life, so I've re-visited them periodically over the years. Come to think of it, I should revisit them again soon, we should do a movie night lel.

a couple hours ago according to: https://redlib.northboot.xyz/r/50501/comments/1k6bfh8/subreddit_is_paused_again/

I'm getting overwhelming pressure to pause the subreddit again. And that there will be an official statement at some point.

quick, someone get on their discord and tell them to come here.

Hey, so what if you absolutely HAD to get out? Like, is there a window you can jump out of?

I once lived in an apartment building with only a front door, and I ended up getting a emergency escape chain ladder long enough to climb down several stories. e.g. something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/ResQLadder-15-ft-2-Story-Supports-Over-Steel-Chain-Portable-Emergency-Escape-Ladder-with-1000-lb-Load-Capacity-FL15/100050579

This is my continued attempt to keep this community alive despite having exhausted every discussion topic I can think of. I’m doing my best.

Don't stress, Hammerjack... it's hard enough keeping a community alive, especially when people are mostly interested only in the games and movies, and there's not a whole lot of news sometimes...

The film [is] a dramatic and controversial story about a corrupt city government that uses an innocent community as its drug distribution center to generate money to fund revolutions in Central America. The film depicts corrupt city officials involved in unthinkable situations with a storyline that is sure to keep you glued to the screen. With Martial Arts gaining steam over the past few years ... its no wonder why we are seeing more and more quality martial arts action films dealing with extreme situations. ... the making of this movie is just another example of how martial arts is truly main stream.

Hey, it's Superbowl Sunday! Since I don't have the kind of image hookup that anon6789 does, I'm looking thru wikipedia for owls that I dig.

This here's a Sri Lanka bay owl! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sri_Lanka_bay_owl Looks very otherworldly!

Looks like Pixelfed's growth spurt is slowing down. Absent any new external stimuli I'm guessing it'll stabilize around 200K to 300K monthly active users -- over a hundredfold order of magnitude from what it was just a month ago.

Masters of the Universe (1987) is the subject of this Sunday's "monsterdon" watch party over on Mastodon, our fediverse sibling!

  • Just start watching that movie this Sunday, Feb 9, 2025 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT / 6pm PT, which is 2am Monday UTC
  • and follow #monsterdon over on mastodon for live commentary. For example, you can follow that hashtag here: https://mastodon.social/tags/monsterdon
  • I usually open two web browser windows on a computer side-by-side. But you could follow the mastodon commentary on a phone app while watching the movie on TV or something...

How to watch the movie:

[Masters of the Universe] stars Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, Billy Barty, Courteney Cox, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Meg Foster. The film follows two teenagers who meet He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, who travels to Earth with his friends to stop their archenemy, the evil Skeletor from obtaining a cosmic key that will enable him to take over their home planet of Eternia and the entire universe. ...At the time of release, it was met with negative reviews from film critics, but is now regarded as a cult film.

Every once in a while someone uploads another copy of Akira to youtube. The latest one, from last week, looks good (Japanese audio with optional subtitles) but it's missing the last 30 seconds -- which is kind of missing the whole point of the movie. But this led me to check how many Akira uploads I could easily find from previous posts here and on [email protected]

Personally I think the first is the best. Weirdly, they all seem to be blocked in Germany and Austria. However, every previous upload I checked was still there. Not sure what that says, but as you probably know, it's an excellent film.

Akira (Japanese: アキラ) is a 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film[4] directed by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by Ryōhei Suzuki and Shunzō Katō, and written by Otomo and Izo Hashimoto, based on Otomo's 1982 manga Akira. Set in a dystopian 2019, it tells the story of Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires incredible telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amid chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo.
