There's been an influx of content surrounding lemmy here. Some of it is open ended:

  • "What kinds of things from reddit would you like to see Lemmy avoid as the user base grows?"
  • "Lemmy, what do you call users of Lemmy?"

And these are a-ok! There's also been a lot of questions like

  • "How do I block a user?"
  • "How do I join a community on a different instance"

These aren't open ended (at least, relatively). They are objective based, and just need a resolution, rather than discussion. These sort of questions are more relevant to [email protected].

I know there's also questions like "What are you guys doing when there’s multiple communities for the same thing across instances?". I'm inclined to let those stay, there is lots of opportunity for discussion. It's a game of discretion from a moderation perspective, but I assume most can easily guess what is cold hard support.

At least from me, moderation of support posts has been sporadic at best, despite the long standing rule. I will begin redirecting these questions to [email protected], however I'm of course willing to listen to the community here if that's not what is wanted, as well as other feedback.

edit: support posts will now be removed, not locked

Edit: I don't mean someone that will sacrifice their life for yours, more someone who would go out of their way to rush you to the hospital or something

Where would you move to ride out a potential WWIII?

I'm increasingly wondering why people in the US aren't taking to the streets in their thousands.

I'd also like to share a poem by Martin Niemöller, who was a pastor in Germany during the Nazi regime and even supported the Nazis at the beginning:

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me (Martin Niemöller)

There are some caveats though. You are immortal but what this actually means is that you are unable to do anything that would probabilistically lead to your death.

So, for example, if you were more probable to die getting into a car than walking, you would choose to walk. But only if choosing to walk was more probable than the probability of you surviving after getting into a car.

It's kind of confusing, but essentially You have no choice if something is about to kill you, but if you plan far enough ahead, the probability of you choosing to do or not to do something versus the probability of your survivability can potentially win out.

So given this version of immortality, what would you plan to do to benefit yourself in some way?

I've already thought about potentially hooking up some kind of lottery Number machine to a guillotine in order to win the lottery but it turns out that the probability of you not making this machine is more likely than making the machine and surviving so you just never end up making the machine.

In order to get an idea of where I'm coming from, here's a video that explains a bit aboabout quantum immortality. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTZZUjnrbF8

I think you know the simulation hypothesis. Our universe could be a simulation created by... well, let's call them "gods".

But, if the simulation continue, we, humans, may reach the point where we could create a simulation of our own universe. In which, the simulated people would reach the point where they simulate their universe, etc...

So, as a corollary, it is not possible to simulate the entire universe, because this imply simulating an infinity of entire universe. It is only possible to simulate a simpler, smaller universe at each "layer".

So my question, are we at the top of the stack, or at the bottom ? Which would imply a much bigger and much more complexe universe above us.

I recently started making newsletters for friends as i have deleted all social media (bar this) and i find it super fun and a refreshing way to keep in contact (we send them back to each other). I try and create a new theme every month to pass onto them. And this month, i made a small static site with a few jokey articles on it.

At the end of it, it made me quite nostalic for what we used to have (i had an awful blog in high school, before social media took ahold).

Anyway, after reflecting on it. It made me want to find a few more blogs to read because i loved the format of it and it made me wonder, do you guys have a blog? what do you write about?

Do you want one? what WOULD you write about?

Let's be clear: i'm not saying conspiracies doesn't exist. By conspiracy theories, i mean the plots whose existence is at best highly unlikely, at worst totally senseless, notably if:

-They are breaking the laws of physics.

-They are too costly (logistically and/or financially) to be profitable.

-They are defended by untrustworthy sources (populist or cult leaders, random people, celebrities without expertise in the concerned domain, parodies taken seriously,...).

-They are often involving far-right's scapegoats.

-They are involving a large amount of people.

-They reject science by principle.

-The interests of the supposed conspirators are unclear or incoherent.

-Their so-called proofs are incoherent, manipulated or are proving nothing at all.

-They would be funny if they were published as parodies in The Onion.

Might sound silly, but every once in a while, random guys around me (pretty short, female) start humming/making random noises when they get near me, usually when I'm alone. Imagine me standing at a red traffic light at night or something. It's never women. Sometimes, it's some creep trying to get my attention, though that's usually kinda obvious.

But I also had it happen with guys who didn't seem like they wanted anything. I lowkey suspect that some might make noises so that I'm not caught off guard or something?

Any men on here who do this? Or am I just tripping?

Edit to summarize: So, a few guys apparently do it on purpose, while others think they might do it subconsciously. Some do it around women, others around whomever, since anyone can get scared. Super interesting.

Also, when I spoke of creeps, I meant actual assholes who did and said shitty stuff, not random socially awkward people. You know the drill.

I don't know how extended this is, but apparently there are car makers selling cars with no keys. Instead you download a proprietary app and use it to access your car.

I like being practical and talking to a car to turn the volume up or down, to open the door or to turn the temperature higher are things I don't need nor want. Give me mechanical levers, reachable stalks and no proprietary bloatware. I don't need a movie theater on wheels.

Imagine an early 2000s car running on an electric motor. That's what I want.

I love the German word verbesserungsbedürftig, meaning in need of improvement. I'm not German, but thought this was a cracking word.

I can't see it happening tbh, but like the USA government discussed putting restriction on AI development, I think OpenAI or some other companies asked them to do so!? And there were short/reels of high profile developers hyping out the fact that "we don't know what we're doing", and one of them quit his job. So why is all that hype? Is the "Matrix" route actually a possible future ?

Death is inevitable but we still seem flummoxed by it happening. We have all kinds of End of Life policies and procedures which do everything possible to make life difficult for those left behind.

Our language is around loss and unexpected, and grief and being bereft.

Why do we make Death so hard to process in our community and what can we do to normalise it across society?
