3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. 5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Basically, house Republicans voted to defund DC police because even though it's not federal money, they fact that that have the power to pass laws affecting DC means that they can claim these as "cuts". Again, defunding the DC police doesn't help the federal government save a dime. But it's technically a budget cut, just not the budget cut they're supposed to working on. Yes, it's that silly.

When did Republicans become the party of defunding the police?

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 109 points 11 months ago (2 children)

The moment they had the power to cut funding so they could give more tax breaks go the rich.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Specifically, this action talked about in the article is an addition to the GOP spending bill which is awaiting vote in the senate OR upon filibuster could be handed back to the house for reconciliation.

The bill also cuts medicare, agriculture, education, and commerce investments.

They're looking to halve the deficit by cutting 2 Trillion in spending so that they can extend their TCJA tax cuts which adds 4.5 trillion net loss for the government.

So that's where the refund the police movement went wrong? They just needed to say they would use the money to enrich themselves? Or no, it has to be like already established rich whites?

[–] Lucky13@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

No refund without a receipt

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

The good news is that we now have one party interested in defunding the police.

The bad news is that they're a party of criminals who have a vested interest in doing so.

I’m not in a position to type out a long comment, but this link should give you the answers you need.

[–] Botzo@lemmy.world 99 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Why is the GOP so soft on crime?!

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 47 points 11 months ago

Because they have a hardon for insurrectionists?

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 78 points 11 months ago (2 children)

What about the thin blue line as the libs were calling for defunding the police?

[–] Maiq@lemy.lol 63 points 11 months ago (2 children)

They will just replace with military. It's not like they are going to go unprotected. I think this is all about a grudge Krasnov has against the DC police defending the capital on January 6th 2021 from his planned insurrection.

[–] Lucky_777@lemmy.world 30 points 11 months ago

Proud someone else is calling this fuck by his real name. Fuck Krasnov!

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (3 children)

That was the capitol police, not DC. I believe they are feds.

just like the military, they outlived thier usefulness.

[–] riskable@programming.dev 63 points 11 months ago

Tell me you're planning an insurrection without telling me you're planning an insurrection.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 47 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They are setting things so they cant be stopped. This is all phase 1.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 28 points 11 months ago

I think you mean they're setting things so they can only be stopped a certain way.

[–] cultsuperstar@lemmy.world 36 points 11 months ago (2 children)

How's that thin blue line doing?

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 12 points 11 months ago

I suspect they're about to replace them with armed murder drones.

Can't have a coup if they don't bring the military in. Robots won't have a moral dilemma and back the people.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's private military contractor time!

[–] Ceruleum@lemmy.wtf 2 points 11 months ago

A spine as strong as peeled banana.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago (1 children)

DC Police weren't exactly fans of January 6th. Could this be a move to weaken an opposition to a possible coup?

G.O.P. Spending Bill Would Force $1 Billion Cut to D.C. Budget https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/10/world/europe/spending-bill-government-shutdown-dc-budget-cuts.html?unlocked_article_code=1.3U4.8pFw.TIGVj5LxeB0M

It doesn't explicitly cut DC Police but the cut has to come from somewhere and it will be the police, city workers, and teachers:

"Given that the budget freeze would come six months into the city’s fiscal year, the District would need to scramble within a matter of days to find a billion dollars in savings between now and the end of September.

Since much of that money was tied up in contracts, leases and Medicaid, all of which take time to be accessible, local officials warned that the most immediate target for the cuts would be the salaries of city workers, including police officers and teachers.

“There’s no way to cut that kind of money in the time that we would have in this fiscal year not to affect police or not to affect teachers and not to affect some of the basic government services that allow us to keep our city clean, safe and beautiful,” said Ms. Bowser"

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 17 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They are positioning to not transition any power ever. 50501

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Isn't it surreal to imagine this administration not ratfucking elections? Isn't it hard to imagine them ever ceding power peacefully? The legal challenges can and should occur, but they're not going to save us in the end I fear.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 11 months ago

As a wise (???) man once said: The courts have made their decision, now let them enforce it.

Legal challenges will not be enough.

"Defund the police!"

".... No, wait, not by the baddies!"

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The 2nd step is using the funds to alleviate poverty and creating other organizations to handle mental health crisises IIRC.

[–] milicent_bystandr@lemm.ee 11 points 11 months ago

Ah... Will you settle for soothing billionaires' egos and making them richer?

[–] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Huh, so weird.
