Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

What a coincidence: I think Lindsey Graham's birth was a mistake.

so do something about it? impeach him, or even pass a resolution denouncing it

[–] IHeartBadCode@fedia.io 82 points 1 year ago (2 children)

From “I’m sure he’s learned his lesson” to this. Republican Senators really give off that “I actually don’t give a shit, I’m here for the paycheck” vibe.

Graham in particular.

As far as I can see, he has no principles or ideas of his own. When they need a sound bite, whoever owns him (or maybe just whoever's renting him this week) swaps his gimp suit for a three piece suit and takes the ball-gag out of his mouth, then trundles him out in front of the cameras to deliver a canned statement.

They aren't there for the paycheck, they're there for the payoffs.

Without action, any republicans 'tut tut'-ing trump is just blowing smoke. I care as much about this as Collins or Murkowski aggressively furrowing their brows at trump for 4 straight years.

[–] SolarMonkey@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fun, lighthearted, fact: the term blowing smoke originates from an old drowning resuscitation practice, in which blowing smoke up the butt of a drowning person was supposed to bring them around.

Obviously it didn’t work, but people still did it for a long time in spite of that, and thus “blowing smoke up my ass” as a phrase to mean being intentionally dishonest.

A little context; This began as American First Nations medical tech. Tobacco smoke enemas were used to treat a variety of conditions, including constipation, bowel obstruction, and colic. They eventually abandoned this because of the toxicity of nicotine. The drowning bit was a last resort treatment. We don't have any info on it ever working. As far as old medicine goes this isn't the biggest offender.

If only there were some indication that this is what he wanted to do so Lindsey could have encouraged people to vote against him.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 31 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Let me check to see if Trump gives a fuck. Be right back. . .

.
.
He doesn't.

[–] ElcaineVolta@kbin.melroy.org 30 points 1 year ago (2 children)

it's kind of astounding Graham still thinks he'll be safe.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would be worried to be literally any Congress member right now. Not only are some of them actively breeding extremists, that they barely have a leash on. But once Trump eventually kicks the bucket, all of that rage will be unleashed upon them for everything shitty that's happened since Trump took office.

Republican politicians are tying their own noose right now, and they don't realize the threat will come from in their own house.

[–] BlackPenguins@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Don't threaten me with a good time.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Corrupt politicians and judges can help usher in a fascist dictatorship, but after that, the fascist dictatorship doesn't really need them anymore.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He must have found where Trump hid one of his vertebrae.

[–] EpeeGnome@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Nah, he just does this every so often. He'll say something surprisingly sensible and moral like this when speaking of the cuff or reacting to new events, and then quickly backtrack on it when he remembers what the GOP want him to say. He knows his usual stances on topics are wrong, he just forgets to keep that to himself occasionally. It's extremely frustrating being one of his constituents.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

lindsey, you lost all credibility in 2017, so please, shut the fuck up

[–] digredior@lemmynsfw.com 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You’re going to have to roll that date waaayyyy back.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 year ago

oh sure. he's never been credible. but everyone lost any reason to not know that in trump's first week in office

[–] Nualkris@lemm.ee 19 points 1 year ago

It's not a mistake if you need yourself some brownshirts.

[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Four cops were killed in that insurrection, right? Did he pardon their killers?

[–] Chekhovs_Gun@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 year ago

He pardoned people who got 20 year sentences for that shit? Wow. Thank you for the link.

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 19 points 1 year ago

For humor:

Graham’s opposition to Trump [in 2016] was evident in his statements; he referred to Trump as a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” and expressed concerns about Trump’s impact on the Republican Party. He also stated, “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed… and we will deserve it.”

[–] Zeppo@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 year ago

Another instance of Trump doing what he made it very clear he was going to do, and people act surprised. No shit Graham, Trump was a mistake and you supported him as hard as possible.

[–] EpeeGnome@lemm.ee 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I give it 24 hours, give or take, for Senator Spineless to remember who his masters are and publicly backtrack on this comment. It's weirdly not rare for him to say something good and sensible like this, but it's unheard of for him to not quickly denounce such statements in favor of the party line.

[–] chronicledmonocle@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Lindsey "I'm Captain Hindsight" Graham, everybody.

Thanks for the useless fucking commentary, Graham. Can I get the winning lottery numbers from three lotteries ago and yesterday's weather, too?

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 year ago

His meemaw was very upset about it.

[–] xenomor@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Lindsey Graham breathing is a mistake.

[–] Pacattack57@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

I literally couldn’t care less what this spineless piece of garbage thinks.

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Oh no! Not the esteemed sensibilities of Lindsey Graham!!!

Whatever the fuck shall we do? Now that this shriveled old sack of musty shit has had his enabling sensitivities attacked.

Ladybugs were a mistake.

[–] Lime66@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

👏,👏 Congrats, you want a cookie? /s

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’d like a cookie please

[–] Lime66@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sure, you actually deserve a cookie 🍪

[–] blakenong@lemmings.world 6 points 1 year ago

Fight tyrants, get cookies! Woo! 🍪

[–] 800XL@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Well yeah he has to say that because otherwise he won't get media coverage. Asshole knew beforehand the other assnole was going to do it and didn't say anything.
