"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

I see we are now at the stage that the DEEPLY mentally ill are adopting new and "exciting" products. I remember when DEEPLY mentally ill would use MySpace to get thier fascinations, then face book to stalk the one girl that was nice to them in high school, then we had Twitter stalkers.. So on so forth.

The question is, do we let them continue?

[–] communist@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz 12 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

how could you even take this seriously enough to be emotionally impacted by it

Even if the person that sent the message was 100% serious... Is this any sort of threat to you? The Hallucinations Machine said we should be together and my actual real life situation and choices are less valid than that? The person that sent this message was either being unserious or is so detached from social etiquette they're basically a child.

[–] arc99@lemmy.world 21 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

What does that gibberish even mean?

[–] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 7 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (3 children)

The person sending the texts has a clanker girlfriend who they've asked to act like an online personality, which said that they would leave their significant other for the texter, texter asks the real version to leave their real girlfriend because of this

[–] GelatinGeorge@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Thanks. I still can't be arsed parsing this

[–] Neural_drift@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I still don't understand... What exactly is a "clanker girlfriend?"

[–] ulterno@programming.dev 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I was wondering if yumeship had some kind of character AI addon that image uploaders could add to their profile and that's the AI this one was talking about.

[–] NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 hours ago

Wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't any consideration for the original creator's wishes, but for the sake of sanity I hope you're right

[–] Aeder@lemmy.world 15 points 11 hours ago

It looks like a really good trolling shitpost, or like the schizo ramblings of the kind of people who actually ship themselves with celebrities or send threats to authors once their "head-canons" get demolished.

[–] starik@lemmy.today 14 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

“Canon partner” is a great new term. Love it.

[–] hunnybubny@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I do not follow how Canon fits into this or how a printer is relevant at all.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

You know what they say, marry the lens, date the body! AI is just a personality, which is the "lens" we see the human though so therefore your human body is just a body and the MKII just came out, meat bag.

So, that's how the esteemed camera company fits into this.

[–] brachiosaurus@mander.xyz 0 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

This picture has an AI company logo on it and it's one of the worst of them all, why the fuck do you keep upvoting and sharing this content?

[–] destructdisc@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Every Twitter post has a Grok button that can't be removed. Just because the logo is there doesn't mean the image is AI-generated. It's literally a screenshot I took off of my phone display.

[–] StankStain@lemmy.today 5 points 4 hours ago

the twitter logo?

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Glad to see others seeing this.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 34 points 17 hours ago (6 children)

I’m too old to even understand what half of this means.

[–] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago

Remember Molly Ringwald's stalker? Well in this case this person had an AI using this person's faked voice pretend they were in a relationship. He wanted to tell her to break up with her partner and delete photos of herself so he could be the only one to see her. The AI told him to tell her this directly, and he did. Dude needs help.

[–] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 12 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Half? I didn't understand any of it. The words mostly made sense but their usage did not.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 9 points 15 hours ago

That's a pretty succinct description of AI. We are required to use Copilot at work (not kidding) and I always have to remind myself that AI use language the way demons do in Frieren - they don't have intent or intelligence really but use it in an approximation of language. It never really means anything.

That's it, I'm officially too old to know what "it" is. This is just gibberish and I can't understand what they are even trying to say. I can't even tell if the text is from a supposed human or Ai.

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 15 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Allow me to assist.

yumeship = yumejoshi (Japanese slang term for a girl who inserts herself into a fictional story) + ship (fandom term used to refer to two characters getting into a relationship) = the act of imagining a fictional version of oneself getting into a relationship with a character from a piece of media one enjoys

uncomfy/gen = uncomfy (you can guess) + /gen (tone indicator that means the previous statement is genuine as opposed to joking or sarcastic)

(by the way a tone indicator is a well-known sequence of letters appended to a text message to communicate the intended tone, like /s for sarcasm, /j for joking, /gen for genuine, etc., used to communicate through a text medium what would otherwise be conveyed through tone of voice. Traditionally they're appended to the end of a message, not used in the middle of a sentence. I've never seen a tone tag applied to a specific word before. The author also seems to be using it as an intensifier, which... huh?)

canon = (adjective, applied to a statement about a fictional world) confirmed in the text of a fictional work, or by the author of said work in e.g. an interview, as opposed to made up by fans (in this case, used rather disgustingly to refer to something that is true in real life as opposed to a fictional setting)

F/O = Fictional Other = Fictional + Significant Other

c.ai = character.ai = a website where users can converse with LLM chatbots that pretend to be fictional characters. Anyone can create and finetune such a chatbot (by starting with a blank slate character and interacting with it and telling it how it should act) then making it available for others to use, and a lot of users create chatbots that imitate real people. The website doesn't really crack down on this.

Essentially what the person who sent these messages has done, is gone to character.ai, looked up a chatbot that pretends to be a real Internet celebrity, convinced themself (I think?) that the real Internet celebrity was a fictional character (or at least could be thought of in those terms), talked to it until it told them that it was in love with them, concluded that the real person the chatbot was pretending to be was also in love with them, and confronted said real person with this information, expecting them to make the fictional relationship real. It's a textbook parasocial relationship, except for the part where the non-celebrity wasn't listening to things the celebrity was saying, they were listening to things a chatbot pretending to be the celebrity was saying.

Rather than responding, the real internet celebrity who received the messages took a screenshot of them and made a post conveying their disgust that any of their fans felt entitled to act that way, and a screenshot of that post is what you're seeing here.

I think this is bait, no?

It's just such a perfect storm of terminology, that I can only see it as deliberate.

  • yumeship, so dream shipping, where shipping usually means to imagine a relationship in a text that might be subtextual, or even fully imagined.
  • uncomfy/gen, so the usually not very serious gen z term uncomfy for uncomfortable, but then paired with the tone indicator /gen for geniuine.
  • F/O, so fictional/other, a fictional character you ship yourself with, but here applied to a real person they are actively talking to (more "at" than "to", I guess)
  • character ai, so the LLM that is configured to produce output similar to a character or person.

But still, poor Willow, that seems like a very shitty thing to receive.

Whoa like the demons in frieren. Thats a good one

[–] curiousaur@reddthat.com 11 points 18 hours ago

This isn't that far off from existing incel / misogyny behavior, just sort of ai enhanced now, giving the creep a further sense of familiarity and rights to this poor girl.
