A good parent often will know more about their child than the child themselves. Unfortunately, many bad parents think they know more.

It's also ages dependent. Till the late teens, children often don't have a good handle on their internal state. They can often get there by 10-12, then teenage hormones do a number on it again.

Finally, it's down to the parents to teach the child how to understand what they feel. This also requires open and honest communications. You can't help and train them to cope appropriately, without knowing what's happening. You can't know what's happening without communication.

There's definitely a difference between rural and urban requirements.

  • Analogue goes further, and can tolerate more interference.

  • Open channels allow others to jump on quickly. E.g. a hunter/hiker listening in, can jump in with critical information on a search and rescue.

  • Lower density means less people to mess with channels, and generally better radio etiquette.

  • Open radios are cheaper, and already have the required infrastructure.

Basically, it's not worth the cost/effort to upgrade. It also provides some extra benefits.

If I was ever both unlucky enough to be struck by lightning, and lucky enough to survive, I would definitely get the lichtenburg pattern tattooed on.

Definitely make sure you get a decent one. I had to redo the bands on mine, since it wasn't water tight (copper nails are great). The charring on the inside does a lot to limit rot. Combined with the aged oak, it's been quite resistant so far.

I would also recommend sticking a metal spout near the top. Mine is fine until it overfills, then I can get a lot of algae growing on the top bit.

Fyi, an old whiskey barrel make an excellent rain barrel (at least for gardening). A half barrel underneath acts as a stand. They look a lot better than a plastic barrel.

Governments are slightly weird, financially. For most people and businesses, money is analogous to water. For governments, with a fiat currency, they create and destroy it.

Money is "created" when the government "spends". It then flows through the system. Eventually, it is "destroyed" when it is taxed. The goal isn't to keep the amount of currency the same, but to control the "pressure" in the system. Too much pressure (money) causes inflation. Too little causes financial issues.

So in short, tariffs either go to the government coffers, or get destroyed, depending on how you look at the system.

I traveled in one, in Germany last year. I was quite impressed. I did note a few minor concerns e.g. the stitching wasn't tight enough to be recessed. It will get damaged easily. The fact that my complaints are on that level says a lot, however.

And yes, they are on my "to buy" list, unlike Tesla.

The method I was taught was to control the distance. If someone is too close for the speed, it needs fixing. I can't adjust the distance, but I can adjust the speed. Basically, slow down until the distance is now appropriate.

Most people seem to get what's going on quite quickly.

The UK won't allow them at all. Recently, someone imported one elsewhere in Europe. When they brought it to the UK, it got seized as dangerous. Even though it wasn't even UK registered. I believe several other countries view it in the same light.

I'd actually be surprised if they even fit on a lot of European roads.

I've heard it described as the "super tribe" effect. We form surrogate tribes around ideas, rather than blood. It's the same thing that holds football fans together, or nationalism.

It's hard to overcome, since it's not a rational effect. The best bet is to subvert the entire group identity. Unfortunately, that's exactly what the billionaires have already done.

It's like smoking. A 20 year smoker will never be as healthy as they would have been without smoking. But someone who smoked for 20 years, then quit for 10 years will be far better off than a 30 year smoker.

ADHD treatment is effective in adults too. I wasn't diagnosed until my 30s, and it's something I'm (very mildly) bitter about not being treated sooner.

The big help is unpacking "maladaptations". Most of ADHD's problems aren't direct, but a domino effect. We adapt to try and cope, but cause other problems. Coping with them cause yet more. The best solution is to nip it in the bus, during childhood. However, unpicking them as an adult is possible. The drugs help MASSIVELY with this, though significant personal effort is also required.

While they are massively more common than in other fields, they are still a tiny minority.

It's also worth noting that the toupee effect may be involved. A lot of trans people can pass, in a work environment, as their preferred gender. I know a few trans people that I would never have clocked as trans, except the info came out in discussions.

The challenge is, can you figure out where it is.

My daughter is 5 now. She's discovered the joy of telling jokes. Unfortunately, her repertoire is painfully small. I've also realised most of my jokes are either not age appropriate or too situational.

What are best/worst kids jokes? Extra points for any that would make her teacher groan. Apparently she LOVES jokes. 😁

For those of you in the UK, IKEA currently has a steep discount on their GU10 bulbs. I've just picked up several dimmable, colour temperature controlled bulbs for £5 each.

They play nicely with HA via a sonoff dongle and ZigBee2MQTT, even down to firmware updates.
