Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

They wouldn't show restraint for a Democrat. These are empty words

They literally showed pictures of hunter bidens Wang on Cspan and he was a private citizen. So spare me the theater.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 114 points 1 year ago

Yeah, pretty sure the report about Al Franken still got released despite him resigning months earlier.

[–] BigMacHole@lemm.ee 65 points 1 year ago

That's DIFFERENT! That was a Private Citizens PENIS NOT Underage Sex Trafficking and Rape Testimonies! THOSE things are PRIVATE!

-Republicans who believe Pizzagate!

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 197 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Never believe that [fascists] are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The [fascists] have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

In the future, I highly recommend sourcing to Wikiquote instead. It's a sister project of Wikipedia which sources its quotes so they can be independently verified, whereas Goodreads just operates on an ad populum approach of upvotes. It also for this reason tends to be more robust to error, and many more prominent figures have specific sections both for popular quotes that are known to be misattributed and for ones that are dubious but not currently falsifiable.

Did I miss something? Are private citizens who rape children immune to prosecution?

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 43 points 1 year ago
[–] Ooops@feddit.org 10 points 1 year ago

Depends... mostly on party affiliation and bank account.

This definition of private citizen seems to extend to all human beings... so why do we even do ethics reports.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 77 points 1 year ago (2 children)

trump is a 'private citizen'. he should be in prison.

[–] zbyte64@awful.systems 46 points 1 year ago (2 children)

SCOTUS: we stopped caring about being consistent

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

When did they start?

[–] Empricorn@feddit.nl 10 points 1 year ago

SCOTUS: Do you understand how dumb "conservatives" are?? They'll vote to make things worse for themselves, because they hate brown people.

Either:

  • The report incriminates him, and Johnson is defending a paedophile.
  • The report exonerates him, and Johnson is actively preventing Gaetz' exoneration.

Both options make Johnson a shitstain.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago

Nothing can make him a shitstain, as he already is. All we can do is increase size and smell.

[–] Draces@lemmy.world 83 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Guy defends the pedo that got him his job. What's new with the Republican party?

[–] TeoTwawki@lemmy.world 76 points 1 year ago (2 children)

"Public figures confused about what 'pivate citizen' means"

there I fixed the headline

But he wasn't a "private citizen" when he did the things you investigated, so release the fucking report.

[–] WoahWoah@lemmy.world 16 points 1 year ago

Johnson: No.

[–] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 69 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Those checks and balances are just a myth at this point.

[–] beebarfbadger@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not at all. Political enemies of the Trump clan will be checked and balanced at every turn.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 10 points 1 year ago

Rules for thee but not for me.

Gaetz was a congressperson when it all took place. That report is government property, AKA it belongs to all Americans.

[–] dugmeup@lemmy.world 57 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Or Biden releases it as a matter of national security? Dems have no balls.

[–] phoneymouse@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Does Biden even have it? It was a house investigation.

Respect the norms!

[–] ChowJeeBai@lemmy.world 56 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Trump should be in prison now because he still is a 'normal citizen'.

[–] whithom@discuss.online 32 points 1 year ago

He would if the justice department weren’t a bunch of wimps and if the judges weren’t bought and paid for.

[–] GroundedGator@lemmy.world 51 points 1 year ago

This motherfucker has covered up some shit in his life. This is not far from the pastor telling the pedo he smoothed things over with the victims family and if we pray about it everything will be ok.

Remember, this is the same guy who still claims he doesn't have a bank account. By my mind that means he's lied on every disclosure and is likely hiding more than just a few bank accounts and investments.

[–] Draegur@lemm.ee 49 points 1 year ago (3 children)

This may be a hot take but PEDOPHILES ARE NOT ENTITLED TO PRIVACY

Who is applying for a different government job.

As an alternative argument, that report almost certainly shows evidence of criminal wrongdoing, and it'd be weird to shield private citizens like that.

How this doesn't just happen is beyond me. One would think one of the MANY staffers with access to this document would have leaked it by now.

Next time I'm in legal trouble I'll just tell people that they can't look at the evidence because I"m a private citizen

He is Schrodingers citizen: both a public servant AND a private citizen whose waveform doesn't collapse until the investigations begin.

[–] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If the report was exonerating, they'd release. Therefore, drawing the adverse inference: holy shit, trump nominated a child rapist to the justice department.

A sitting representative just needs to read it into the Congressional Record.

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If he's representing me, then I have a right to see it. Period.

I swear, these conservatives now lack any kind of moral standard.

Can someone just fucking leak it already

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Except thats bullshit because house reports have been released after members resigned in the past.

[–] elrik@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

He almost turns me into a believer because it seems the only place these fuckers might face any consequences would be hell itself.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

Blatant disregard for anything in the way of violently grabbing power. This guy is gross.
