Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

The Trump administration plans to eliminate the IRS’ Direct File program, an electronic system for filing tax returns directly to the agency for free, according to two people familiar with the decision.

The program developed during Joe Biden’s presidency was credited by users with making tax filing easy, fast and economical.

But Republican lawmakers and commercial tax preparation companies complained it was a waste of taxpayer money because free filing programs already exist, although they are hard to use.

More criminalizing of the poor. Off to the camps with you!

What's great about this is nothing. I tried to use it last week and the site was down already. It said "for maintenance" but for 3 straight days at the peak of tax season?

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Worked great for me, but I did it in March. Saved me hundreds and it was less work for me than gathering records and getting them to HRBlock was in 2024. But yeah, discontinue an already developed program while spending a ghastly amount of money on a military parade honoring a felon traitor.

Had to be a difficult choice for the administration.

Keep the system that makes it easy for people to give you their tax dollars to steal vs. make it more difficult for them to fork over the cash, but you get to charge them to do it.

If we actually cared about government waste in the US, we would go after the insurance and tax prep companies. Fucking leaches on society. They only exist to siphon money from people.

I'm just going to see how long I can go without actually filing, maybe the country will completely collapse first.

How much money has H&R Block put in trump's pocket?

[–] Brotha_Jaufrey@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

I’m far from rich and i had to pay $250. To have my taxes done by an accountant. I could not figure out how to do what I needed to do with the free tax software.

It’s so over complicated.

[–] Default_Defect@midwest.social 5 points 10 months ago

Do you have a bunch of extra stuff that complicates it? My mom only needed help finding where to access it and filed hers and her fiance's no problem and she's the type that I have to remind how to use the remote shes been using for over a year.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

If you're using the standard deduction, you're wasting money by not just doing it yourself. Takes like 30 min.

[–] neon_nova@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

No, I have business expenses that need to be calculated. The service I used in the past changed their layout and I could not find where to enter business expenses and they never responded to my request for help.

So, I started over and eventually found where to enter the expenses, but I was not sure I was doing it right and then the site said I was reporting a loss for the year, which was not correct, so I just gave up.

There just needs to be a "How much were your business expenses and how much did you earn?

DOGE to the rescue, of course they'd save it right? ...right?

[–] militaryintelligence@lemmy.world -3 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I've used a few "free" filing programs. You finally get to the end and ready to submit then bam, for some reason you have to pay

[–] IamtheMorgz@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I've used free tax USA for years. I don't pay for filing my fed, just my state. But my taxes tend to be pretty simple, so I guess ymmv

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 7 points 10 months ago

Another for freetaxusa, I've only ever paid for state filing, and it's like $15. Worth it. They offer various "services" that naturally cost extra, but they're all optional. Never had an issue.

[–] IMongoose@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

You picked the wrong one. I've been filing free for years.
