Initially. Still annoying but title is misleading.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 6 days ago (7 children)

I need a fucking online subscription to buy a controller???

[–] [email protected] 44 points 6 days ago (1 children)

At least it gives people who are using their switches a chance to buy one, instead of them selling out in seconds to a network of bot accounts before winding up on eBay for $300+ the following week.

It’s not the perfect system, but I can understand why they are doing it.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago (8 children)

I am using my Switch just fine without an online subscription. I guess Nintendo thinks I am using it wrong.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Right, but he sub is shareable and a pretty cheap barrier for entry... and required to play those GameCube games anyway.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 days ago

I don't need it to play Smash with friends on the couch.

Really I shouldn't need the subscription for GC ports either. What's wrong with making them individual purchases like on the 3DS? (Answer: that's not monthly recurring revenue.)

Nintendo opting to forgo selling retro games piecemeal and instead expecting consumers to rent access to them in perpetuity is an anti-consumer move.

I have no problem paying for games when they're sold at affordable, reasonable prices, so until that's the case for Nintendo's library, better to just emulate as much of it as possible.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Sure, but that's a different issue; I agree with that. Don't forget that if you even are allowed to 'buy' them, they will close the online service for that platform in the future with no guarantee you can use it on another platform.

I mean, it's Nintendo - if there was a way to somehow automatically charge your card every time you say, hear or think the words "Nintendo", "Mario" and such, they'd do it without hesitation...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago (4 children)

That's been standard for the switch retro controller releases. And yes it's been bullshit the entire time. I would have liked an N64 one.

Lol yeah. It makes sense. You don't want your peripheral for the console to sell out to buyers that just want to use it for emulation.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Does it make sense? Emulation is going to happen one way or another. If Nintendo sold a GC controller that is PC compatible, they'd at least make some money from those buyers.

Well that got me all worked up for no reason, didn't it.

Thanks for the clarification.

COME ON, OP!

[–] [email protected] 92 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Remember, Nintendo tried to sue a grocery store in Costa Rica. Maybe don’t support them.

Remember Nintendo… please feel free to list the hundred other crappy things they did here.

[–] [email protected] 56 points 6 days ago (1 children)
  • Periodically killing mods and fan projects
  • going after palworld
  • using last-gen hardware in their consoles
  • never decreasing prices
[–] [email protected] 29 points 6 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

using last-gen hardware in their consoles

I mean there’s nothing inherently wrong with that (if only they charged last-gen prices as well lol)

but anyways here’s a bunch more shit they’ve done:

  • charging full price for basic rereleases
  • removing reviews from the switch eshop
  • killing emulation projects
  • patenting basic gameplay elements
  • sued a man so hard he was forced to pay them part of his income for the rest of his life

and for a few older ones, just to show that they’ve been shitty this whole time, actually:

  • attempting to kill game cheating devices (like the game genie)
  • attempting to kill video game rentals
  • preventing 3rd parties from releasing games on competitor’s consoles, essentially giving themselves a monopoly

(also they’re partly owned by the saudi government, so, there’s that)

(and pls remember that, despite all of their shit, nintendo is far from the worst. it's a systemic problem, not an individualist one. remember that ubisoft covered up sexual assault for years and that microsoft is literally engaging in genocide. the problem is that capitalism lets these companies get away with it.)

It’s ironic considering their early days in gaming. They were targeted by Universal over a BS lawsuit for using “Kong” in Donkey Kong and him being a gorilla like King Kong.

Now they’re pulling the same crap on smaller people/businesses and also working with the very company who did the lawsuit to bring their games to the movies.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 5 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Yes, Nintendo! Please paywall my nostalgia of the very first game console I ever played! Charge me an exorbitant price during an economic crisis to satisfy my childlike need to regress to a time before I understood what money was!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Hang on, Nintendo fans are into findom? That would explain a few things. On a related note, I think I finally understood why people keep giving Chris Roberts money for Star Citizen.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

I mean, I bought the starter ship for SC which was 40€ I believe and I still play occaisonally. I'd say I definitely got my money's worth out of that game.

[–] [email protected] 31 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Bullshit. They are doing that to cause a fever of pre-orders in the US despite the tariffs. Within a year, they will be on shelves.

[–] [email protected] 28 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Nintendo pulls Switch 2 pre-orders in US over Trump tariffs

Edit: also, these will never be on shelves. They will be a membership exclusive online order regardless, even after the preorder-only window.

Or they will be worth their weight in gold like GameCube Component cables

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 days ago

sure i'll only buy my contollers for nintendo consoles from 8bitdo from now on. good idea, nintendo.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 6 days ago (2 children)

K. I'll just wait for the 8bitdo clone.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 days ago

I’ve been waiting years for 8bitdo the make a fully functional clone and they haven’t yet.

The closest they've come is a retrofit electronics kit for the OG shell last year.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

I wonder if the Mayflash GC adapter would work.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 5 days ago

Lol gimps trying to squeeze as much profit as they can get from the people

[–] [email protected] 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I have the version that was made for the OG Switch and the build quality is garbage tier. Developed stick drift in both sticks in less than a month.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

Really? I have the Wii U ones and they put up with a lot of abuse. The rubber on some sticks have completely deteriorated but they still input accurately.

It's honestly what's made me so bitter about the Joy Cons.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Totally, my white Wii U one turned to SNES-Yellow overnight lol First the bottom half, just overnight, then two weeks later the top half.

Still going strong after 4500 hours of smashing

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

I'm intrigued to see if the new switch, with its higher price tag, lasts any longer or if it's gimped to make consumers keep buying replacements again.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I guess they don't want your money if you're not buying the switch. Strange move, but I guess it's their prerogative to alienate more consumers.

I can't buy any of their classic controllers here in Norway. Never understood why we were left out.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

It’s just the first batch, calm down…

[–] [email protected] 9 points 5 days ago

Nintendo keeps shooting themselves in the foot. On one hand, as a PCMRer and massive fan of Valve, I'm glad to see how many are open to moving over here. On the other hand, Nintendo was the last console manufacturer I actually liked (despite their anti-emulation crusade) and so it's like a death of an era.

The future really is in console-like PCs a la the Steam Deck and Valve's upcoming Fremont.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Nintendo is just dedicated to shooting themselves in the foot as hard as possible with this launch aren't they?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago (2 children)

The Nintendo GameCube (GCN) Controller – Nintendo Classics will be exclusively available for Nintendo Switch Online members and will initially only be offered to those invited to pre-order a Nintendo Switch 2 console

Does this suggest I can buy it later or am I going to have to pay scalper price if I want it?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 days ago

I think you can buy it later. They still sell all the NES, SNES and N64 controllers on their website.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

I think you'll always need NSO sub if buying directly from Nintendo, but pre-order rule only seems to be because of scalpers, so that only those who can actually use it, buy it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago
[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I bought the one they released for the Wii U and it only worked for Smash
