Redundant for this group, but people with the will and know how might want to start backing up their stuff if they haven’t already, just from a preservation standpoint. I went to watch MIB randomly when I saw it on Hulu and something was off from the opening credits so I put my version on instead and it just felt better. Not sure exactly what it was, but in the new world of AI everything and music rights concerns, you never know. There’s also been censorship of available episodes for shows, with the Community DnD episode with Chang as a dark elf coming to mind.

Life can be simple and calm if we don't create our own problems, like giving money and power to big publishers, who come back later to bite us. Long live piracy!

[–] raman_klogius@ani.social 4 points 1 day ago

no money, no problem!

Copy everything, let God sort it out. Sharing = caring.

MST3k Keep Circulating Those Tapes

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Assuming this meant pirated tapes (unsure if that msg was for digital or not) but even digital has been going on longer than streaming services were available. Its like people forgot about napster and kazaa. Though to be fair they may not have been around for them but it's not like older people had no options when the Internet was newer.

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago

I got into the digital stuff around 2002ish with eDonkey. There was a big MST3k trading community at the time, and I had access to an OC-48 line back then. All the 90 minute episodes were sized to CD, so I had a whole spindle of episodes.

I went all to AV1 last year. Enough stuff supports it, and realtime transcoding on a (relatively cheap) Arc GPU works well enough.

AV1 is superior enough for both size and visual fidelity, that it's worth the slightly extra encoding time. But absolutely not if you don't have HW encoding.

[–] cosmos8188@leminal.space 5 points 1 day ago

Yep HEVC can suck one. AV1 is the format everyone wanted, media formats shouldnt have any loyalties tied to them

No doubt. 🥲 Fortunately, I have a limited repertoire of movies and series that I simply watch over and over again without ever getting tired of them. 🤣 Still circa 16TB though.

[–] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

Aye, there's the rub. Only heavy effects stuff needs the big files now, but later there may be regrets (or instant enhancement, who's to know)

[–] Trampampoline@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

On ~~trash~~American upload speeds?

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

TW: extremely intimate description of the speeds at which my uploads and downloads collectively run1000BASE‑T

I know it's no excuse, but I'm in the EU. 🫡

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's actually not especially good in the EU as far as I can tell (also in the EU, have the same, €15 a month).

That said, it's pretty easy and cheap to get the rest of one's setup (router, Ethernet cables, the actual torrent machine) with Gigabit-Ethernet so that it all actual works at 1Gbps end-to-end but costs a bit more to upgrade one's internal network and download machines (I use a MiniPC next to the router) to go above that - everything pretty much supports 1Gbps by default nowadays, whilst only some stuff supports 2.5Gbps, and you definitely have to pay quite a bit extra for 10Gbps.

The kit I had for years already supported Gigabit Ethernet all the way and I would need newer kit to really use properly a fibre Internet connection above 1Gbps, which is why I personally did not go for the 2.5Gbps or even 10Gbps (the latter would be €45/month). That and downloading an x265 1080p torrent of a 1h episode of a TV series from a popular public tracker taking between 30s and a minute is good enough for me and I don't really want to spend more money to bring that down to 10-20s or less.

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I was replying to somebody that was complaining about shitty US speeds.😅

And now I will reply to you. 😎

I live in a shithole of a town whose buildings are lined with CAT5 copper cables. Those reach 10 Gbps up to 55 meters with good quality active equipment (switches, repeaters, OLTs), which is the next problem: in this town, the municipality owns the fiber and they have "better" things to spend their money on than changing the residential equipment to be 10GBASE-T, or IEEE 802.3an-2006 compatible. My ISP of course takes advantage of the situation and overcharges me for my measly 1 Gbps but hey... At least they gave me a public IP for free 🤣

[–] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I have multigig in my area. I currently pay for 8 gig but my provider sells 15 gig up/down. I'm sure there are plenty of rural areas with awful speed but I suspect that's the same anywhere in the world, not just America.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

For series? Are you made of money?

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago

I wish. I was actually just trying to make a meme/joke. 🤣 While I do try to find the best quality of everything, with series I tend to do 1080p bluray remuxes.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Gotta be careful, a lot of those top-end releases are just lightly touched upscales. No space for bloat in this economy!

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hear hear! I usually do some research into how the media was intended to look by the directors. And old school stuff, I of course avoid having in 4K and whatnot.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I watched some tube-u-mentary a couple of weeks ago that talked about 1080 vs 4k. A shocking amount of fresh content is shot in 2k, editied tand they goes 4k only when they apply the SFX.

THEN, i started looking at 3D releases, there was a bunch of new stuff, it appears it's all virtual 3D :(

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 8 points 1 day ago

Jellyfin and Radarr really do be like that.

The very least paid services could do is support unified apps that let us show and search what we're have access to from the TV, rather than having to do it from justwatch.com or something, but no, they all want to be the centre of the universe, while having the bare minimum of content at the maximum price the market can bear.

Oh nice, didn't know there is a conclusion to One Piece.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Guy has a hole in his chest. Is he alright?

In the manga, I believe he had his left side of his face blown off too, but they didn’t add that to the anime because they’re cowards!

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Folks forget Scrooge is a pirate.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He definitely loots heritage sites.

[–] alapakala@quokk.au 3 points 1 day ago

He even made 2 shows to show his raiding adventures with his nephews, that he pays with child bribes.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I think I still have movies that I had ripped off of rented dvds on an old hard drive around here somewhere, from over twenty years ago when I still had dial up internet. (It was quicker to just rent and rip than download a movie at 3-4kps.)

[–] dkppunk@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

I still do this with Blu-ray's I borrow from the library. It’s pretty great 😊

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But also, they look real shit compared to what we're used now.

Honestly, I’m fine with modded YouTube Music and modded Spotify on IOS. For PC Spicetify Spotify and uBlock Origin for YouTube Music site.

[–] jaygray91@piefed.zip 1 points 21 hours ago

I use YouTube Music Morphe in lieu of Spotify just for discovery. And now one of the later patches added listenbrainz scrobbling. I can have two algorithms for discovery.

Well in any case of misunderstanding how that works, some songs that I listen to is YouTube only. since people have been uploading music, including original music, to YouTube since before google bought them.

And I still want to rebuild my offline library. can't rely on online streaming only for when the world goes to shit.

[–] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think the next tier would be to only pirate media that is licensed by huge corporations and still buy indie media to support creators

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Next tier after that: pretty much where I am at. No need to pirate corporate media, I just don't consume it anymore.

Yes to local and indie projects though.

Just for sake of saying it, I really don't like the term creator.

[–] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I usually avoid corporate stuff, but not always. What term do you prefer over "creator"?

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Whatever they are. Historians, comedians, filmmakers, etc.

Content is the dumbest word, and again that word means they are making slop to consume so YouTube can shovel you ads.

[–] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 3 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

I generally agree, but those terms you prefer are specific about the type of media. I think "creator" and "content" are still the most neutral and catch-all terms, but they have been tarnished by commercialized platforms.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (1 children)

I am lifting this quote from another Lemmy user: "CEO that calls music ~“content without production costs"

They are referring to the Spotify CEO, and the discussion is about AI making music.

The relevance here is exactly what I am trying to say: the term "content" is used by the corporations (youtube, Sportify, TikTok) as a catch all term for just about anything to get clicks and revenue. People shouldn't be reduced to this. We have authors. The books have "content" hence the name Table of Contents. But we dont call an Author a content creator.

Youtube didn't give a shit what was on the screen as long as it was "content". Sell more ads.

Its a derogatory term I guess is what I am saying.

[–] LemmyPlaceDN@europe.pub 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I get your point, but what would be an alternative term for content or creators in general? One that encompasses all types of media. Maybe "artists" and "art", but that doesn't always fit, I guess

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 0 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

There is no need to encompass all of it. That's the point.

Doesnt the words just stand out as wrong? Creators. Well that means nothing. We all create things.

i got obsessed with the smart playlists and home screen sections on jellyfin and now i just spend all day making quirky collections and channels on ersatztv cries
