"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has developed a new software suite, driven by Google Gemini, Open AI and Anthropic’s Claude, that helps party members generate so-called “rage bait” social media postings.

Central to the new campaign is the Alternita platform, registered to the AfD’s general secretary Hans-Holger Malcomeß, which promises users social media posts “in five minutes, with your positions, in your style, your branding”.

In the case of the AfD, an undercover investigation by Germany’s Correctiv outlet revealed how, in a few clicks, a populist article can be turned into provocative posts to flood social media feeds.

This was inevitable and extremely dangerous. Let's consider all the data that's collected about each of us, then think about companies like Palantir, that specializes in big data integration, AI, and analytics. Then think about who runs the company; Alex Karp and Peter Thiel. Both can be considered to hold views that are not in the best interest of society, and with few guardrails to stop them. If anyone is unaware, all the combined data they hold about us can build extremely detailed and accurate psychological profiles of each of us. They can infer whether we own pets, what type of pets and even your pets names. They know whether you're a smoker, they know what political views you hold, they know your race, where you live, how much money you have, what kind of car you drive, whether you're likely to be a drug user or go to church. They know what types of advertising appeals to you and whether you've made a purchase decision based on those ads. They know whether you spend your days inside playing video games or whether you exercise regularly at the gym. They know your sexual orientation and whether you've attended a furry convention. They know what kind of games you play. They know what kind of language incites you to anger or what language steels your resolve. And it's not just these companies that have this insight, it's also governments. And on top of all this, people are easily manipulated. So imagine an entity, government or otherwise, that, for example, wants to harden divisions between the left and right to distract from more important concerns. With the speed of AI and all this data they can lead you down a chosen path. That path could be beneficial to us, if those in power were good and wise leaders who cared about the good of society. But we have few of those. They will most likely be be paths that maintain and grow power structures that benefit the wealthy and powerful. One of our best defenses is to slow down and be critical thinkers, to not rush to judgement and allow our cognitive biases to rule us. To see past the chaos around us and be ever diligent and aware. That's going to be nearly an impossible task for most of us, but we must try

Can Germans please explain to me how this party is even allowed to exist. I thought fascist political parties were illegal?

[–] dumnezero@piefed.social 1 points 1 minute ago

fake anti-fascism, it looks like they didn't learn much.

Germany never really de-Nazified. It was just an act to rejoin the West which the US played along with because of the Cold War. That's why Germany is such an enthusiastic supporter of their Nazi adjacent friends in occupied Palestine.

Pankaj Mishra goes into this in his book "The World After Gaza"

There is not enough political will, because the current government can just point at them as a boogeyman while still enacting fascist policies. Today they will be voting to try to abolish psychotherapy for example. [Edit: They actually passed it and are really proud of themselves for completely gutting social welfare]

We did Patrick, we saved Germany!

OMG, I hate how much this sounds like the US about ten years ago

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 7 hours ago

It's complicated

The threshold in proving that a party is democracy damaging is quite high

https://freiheitsrechte.org/en/themen/starke-grundrechte-fuer-eine-lebendige-demokratie/afd-gutachten

It's discussed for years now, but it seems like things start to look good. Just don't hold your breath that it will happen fast

Maybe, just maybe, engagement ranked social media wasn’t a good idea?

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

This has to be cheaper for Russia et al than troll farms, right?

I've just been assuming that these were all AI for the past few years already.

This is just the automated version of what's been happening the last decade in social media. The foreign influence operations have been very effective at driving splits among Democrats. I know Reddit is rife with them but wondering about them operating here as well. The pattern sure seems to hold on some controversial topics.

[–] PoopingCough@lemmy.world 5 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Establishment Dems have done a good enough job at creating a rift in their party on their own ober the past 20 years; no rage-baiting AI required.

[–] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 2 points 12 hours ago

But for unknown reasons not a good enough job for dissidents to create the American Social Democratic party

A third party is absolutely possible, it just requires one or two headnames and Social Democratic reforms which has major support among the electorate of both sides of the aisle

"Google and OpenAI said they are each examining Alternita’s use of their engines while Anthropic did not reply to the Correctiv query."

To prevent it from happening again, right? Right?

[–] jimmy90@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

the commies just need to copy paste from lemmy for their app

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 day ago

only 'examining' the books, to make sure their bills are getting paid on time.

[–] joeljoelle@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They should develop an AI that makes them seem less like weak ass losers, but alas I don't think we'll ever have the tech

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 3 points 14 hours ago

Fascists man, they are pathetic little losers by nature all of them. They can follow their dear Führer.

Yes, good fit. Two entities that do not care about reality, facts and are both not remotely human.
