I’ll just make my own coffee

[–] AlexLost@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

This is a great example of how CEOs are completely out of touch with the real world. These are the last people who should be making decisions for us all...

Starbucks is a great example of how a company that has generated decades of goodwill can quickly squander it due to greed.

Users can also upload photos and ask the app which drinks would aesthetically complement their clothes or environment.

Talk about frivolous. This idea makes me angry but I can’t quite articulate why. Maybe because it’s another sign of how out-of-touch those making decisions are from the rest of us?

Here I am, refilling my one reusable cup (received as a gift) with free coffee from work on Friday afternoons, so I can drink it on the weekend without having to buy any. And there’s the billionaire C-suite asshole thinking that making our coffees match our outfits is a top priority.

The funny thing is, I have Starbucks gift cards. I haven’t touched them. I should though, because otherwise that’s money (someone else) already paid to the company and I might as well get something for it. But then I read shit like this and I feel repulsed at the idea of going there. I really wish people would just gift cash instead…

Once you start gifting cash, you also start seeing how unnecessary it is sometimes to gift people things. Family (that you like, but don't meet much) get together for Christmas? Why bother having adults get gifts that then they gift back in form of another gift and no one really uses?

I'm OK with gifting kids some cash (if possible) since its a one way thing, but once 2 adults would have gifted each other cash back and forth, it exposes how silly it would have been.

Thankfully, my family knows I don’t go to Starbucks. The gift cards in question were from employers and coworkers.

Unfortunately I told my family that there is a coffee shop my partner's family partially owns. They gifted us a Starbucks gift card because "we like coffee" :|

It's definitely indicative of how out-of-touch these people are. I find it baffling as a concept to specifically order drinks based on "aesthetically complimenting the environment".

This is solving no problems suffered by anyone rational.

Simulacra and Simulation.

We are already a society that barely interacts with the real world as intended but this is so many layers back that its truly shocking.
Overpriced colorful coffee drinks that are supposed to be shown as a status symbol and an aesthetic?
Not a tasty drink even, which is already yet another layer from the truth of it which is...

This is a highly addictive compound (caffeine) that our ancestors put up with for the energizing effects it gave despite the strong bitter flavor. One that causes strong withdrawal symptoms when you get over reliant on it.
I just can't imagine letting a company get me addicted on something for the pretend joy it brings for matching my outfit.

[–] FearMeAndDecay@literature.cafe 1 points 16 hours ago

I got to that part and was like “who the fuck buys drinks like that?” Like yeah, mood boards and shit are really popular but people buy drinks that taste good. Only influencers buy drinks solely for the aesthetic

[–] mr_anny@sopuli.xyz 3 points 14 hours ago

So vibe backlashing?

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 2 points 14 hours ago

I don’t need a chatbot to tell me to get the one drink I ever get there. Just give me my mocha.

[–] Rivermoonwolf@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Another excellent reason for me to avoid Starbucks.

[–] loaf@sh.itjust.works 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ll just make it at home. Fuck them.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 9 points 1 day ago

I know, right?

When I go to Starbucks I get stale beans that have been roasted badly in industrial roasters. The best I can say for Starbucks coffee is "it's better than grocery store coffee". And that's an alarmingly low bar. There's a reason why people rarely drink just coffee at Starbucks, I think.

At home I get a lovely "Yunnan Red Wine Sun-Dried" SOE coffee roasted at the precise point I like best delivered to me twice a month in batches that match basically exactly how much I use for my daily cup over that period. I happen to have a package coming in, so the price is readily visible on my shopping app: 46RMB. That's 46RMB for a two-week daily supply. A single "Tall" (within 10ml of the size I drink at home) cup of "fresh-brewed coffee" at a local Starbucks gives a lower grade of coffee (by far!) for 22-25RMB (depending on the coffee selected). That means in 2-3 days the price exceeds a 15-day supply of a far superior coffee.

So agreed. Fuck 'em. Even before they introduce this idiot idea of an LLMbecile chatbot to make suggestions.

Answer is to order from some other place. Classical diners are the best I heard.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 28 points 1 day ago

Goddammit, stop using our water for all this garbage.

"Companies are looking to slowly chip away at the burden of choice that comes with shopping, travel, and dining."

Ugh.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Man, even if Starbucks had nothing to do with AI, I've been saying fuck starbucks for decades anyways! If Lemmy had a mods pick for best post, this would be my pick of the month.

[–] Krauerking@lemy.lol 1 points 17 hours ago

We should have best post of the week like zombieland.
