AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Bubble behavior

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 53 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Every fucking day this guy is in the news literally begging for everyone to keep pretending the Emperor is totally wearing the sickest fit.

All these fucking AI CEOs out there lately begging the world to fuel their fantasies just a little longer.

They know the bubble is gonna burst; they've known this for years, but their desperation of late seems to indicate that it's bursting soon.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 56 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They lost control of the narrative. All their millions in PR and advertising and it cannot cover up the terrible idea that is unchecked corporate GenAI. This bubble can't pop fast enough.

They're like my dad. You can't just describe everything as "perfect/really good" even contrary to reality. That doesn't just magically gaslight everyone around you into believing what you say, all it does is make those words lose meaning when you say them and your opinion loses credibility.

Then when something is actually really good, no one takes your word for it because that's what you say when something is total shit. It's completely insincere, and it's so easy to see through.

[–] UnspecificGravity@piefed.social 33 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dear smart people,

Stop telling.the dummies with the money that this shit is fake.

From,

The dude that wants to take all your grant money, taxes, and healthcare benefits, and cook the whole planet.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

terrified their bullshit pump and dumps gonna be revealed before they've extracated maximum value and shifted all the liability to shell companies.

[–] ClassyHatter@sopuli.xyz 70 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Now I want a PhD so I can properly trash AI.

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 25 points 2 days ago (1 children)

In fairness, I think you can do the same at home with slightly fewer details and significantly less debt.

[–] DonPiano@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

In Germany, phd students are (mostly/often, depending on the discipline) employed on a public payscale. That is: You are (or ought to be) reducing any previous debt as you work.

You don't need one, you can just prompt an LLM to trash AI for you /s

[–] becausechemistry@piefed.social 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have a Ph.D. The stuff people are currently calling β€œAI” is trash.

I regularly do peer review for manuscripts sent to a scientific journal. The number of them β€œwritten” with LLM tools is staggering. It’s really disheartening to read several pages of slop filled with very confident-sounding but astonishingly wrong citations.

But it is pretty satisfying to be able to return a review that basically says β€œHey editor, they wrote this with a trash robot. I recommend rejection.”

[–] CmdrUlle@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

At least it's an easy reject...

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 15 points 2 days ago

Snake Oil Salesman doesn't want people criticizing Snake Oil.

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 44 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Well that just made me realise something. In my department we have folks with a masters and folks with a PhD.

All the pro-AI people ("what about using AI to reduce marking load", "do you have any AI use in your course", etc) lack PhDs.

It's a strange overlap, and now I'm wondering why.

People who are used to doing actual research and who understand the necessity of things like a peer review process understand how dangerous it is to have something that's straight up confidently wrong 20% of the time, and yet have people who treat it like the ultimate authority on things. These people have likely seen AI be stunningly stupid in fields they know about and can extrapolate from there that it's probably stunningly stupid about most things.

[–] CileTheSane@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

People think AI is great for subjects they are not experts in. Experts will say AI is trash for their area of expertise.

AI is really good at sounding smart to the unknowledgeable.

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Oh great. β€œDoomer narrative”. The new β€œwoke,” to mean anything I disagree with or dislike is a β€œdoomer narrative.”

"Enough of this doomer narrative" said the people with their foot on the pedal accelerating the whole world towards its demise...

I'm so tired, I wish these assholes your receed to the crevices they climbed out of

[–] GrindingGears@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

Says the guy who's wearing my mothers couch from the 80s as a jacket.

Buddy is all hat no cattle.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Boy as soon as trump came around he just dove head first deep into the fascist cess pit didnt he?

Always a piece of shit, but now an extra special piece of shit with not wanting the filthy "intellectuals" criticizing his grand designs. That certainly doesnt sound familiar at all.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Man, first Satya at Microsoft and now Jensen at nVidia. Lots of scared talk by tech leaders heavily invested in AI. I wonder if the bottom is going to drop off soon.

That's what I'm thinking. It will be glorious. The downfall of Babylon, and its merchants will weep.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sure are showing a lot of faith in your product there, champ.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 days ago

Exactly. If his product were any good, it would speak for itself. He wouldn’t need to beg and grovel for people to like it. Ridiculous and pathetic.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 28 points 2 days ago

Gosh, tech CEOs are so pathetic.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The people I know who are most skeptical of LLMs and other genAI tools actually work with machine learning and statistical models. They know the limitations and pitfalls, and they know that getting 'AI' right 80% of the time is the EASY part. Getting it right the remaining 20% of the time might be impossible with the current approach.

[–] pahlimur@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I have limited exposure to ML for maintenance modeling in manufacturing. LLMs are sort like a parrot with improved guessing abilities and an insane amount of guessing power. It will never move beyond being a parrot, because that's what it is.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Hey Huang what did you say, that youre a boomer behaviour? Gotcha.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

What use is a smart and educated brain if not to condemn the current fad of artificial "intelligence".

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or maybe fuck your product nobody wanted that you're trying to push on us the way they lied that drugs would. We don't want your slop.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago

His company will bounce back. They're selling shovels and there will always be another gold rush.

He's just begging to extend the gold rush because having to wait for another one is just so tiresome. It was several years between the crypto mining boom and the AI craze. In that time they only made a shitload of profit, rather than unprecedented gigafucktonnes of profit.

"Why won't anybody buy my tulips even tho I paid so much for them πŸ₯Ί"

[–] JuliaSuraez@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Healthy skepticism isn’t anti-tech, it’s how tech actually gets better.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 4 points 2 days ago

So the bane of marketing is intelligence.

[–] Virtvirt588@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

He seems awfully authoritive in this case - paranoid so to speak.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

He doesn't want them to? Okay... And what's the baby going to do about that?

Billionaires are so used to buying things and being greeted with a smile at hotels that they forget simply wanting something doesn't mean it happens.

Jensen (we're not Enron) Huang doesn't want "well respected people " like PhDs and CEOs to criticize AI, especially in front of governments.

Not in front of gov officials huh?

Yeah sure let’s all keep it on the dl when the gov people walk into the room.

Who the fuck does he think he is? β€œOne of us?” It’s not like he’s trying to hide people on the run from the gov.

[–] XLE@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Huang is sort of correct here, but he's complaining about the people who have bought halfway into his narrative.

Doomers: "AI is so powerful, it'll cause the Apocalypse"

Huang: "AI is so powerful, it'll make me rich"

Critics Huang doesn't want to acknowledge: "AI is absolute trash, and it's ruining stuff right now"

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago

If Huang isn't already rich enough for his wildest imagination. Nothing will ever be enough.

I think he might be mistaken with the "Well-respected people" phrase including CEO's

That's a lot of hubris for a guy wearing a dead animal for a jacket.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Not much more satisfying than exposing this grifter dickhead.

[–] CptOblivius@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Good thing I have an MD. Screw AI!

[–] frog_brawler@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

NVDIA didn’t even come up with the idea to use their shit for AI. Tell this dumb fucker to sit down.

[–] DegenerationIP@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Its important to speak up. Besides all bullshit AI can be useful in some fields. But that needs feedback and companies Not making Money with AI, should listen and improve for the needs in those specific fields

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Don't worry asshole. You have all that money to keep you warm during this trying time when no one believes in your product or you.
