Seagulls? 🤬 Stop it now!
Electric Vehicles
Overview:
Electric Vehicles are a key part of our tomorrow and how we get there. If we can get all the fossil fuel vehicles off our roads, out of our seas and out of our skies, we'll have a much better environment. This community is where we discuss the various different vehicles and news stories regarding electric transportation.

Perfect name since birds are really computers also.
Why is my body involuntarily dancing when I watch this???
Basically a Chevy bolt for $11,000 (top trim).
200% tariffs won’t protect Chevrolet.
Well it charges faster, has assisted driving and native android auto. The Bolt takes an hour to fast charge from 10-80%, has lane assist (as an addon) and Android Auto. For 12 grand more than what you'd pay for the Seagull in Europe.
Chevy is fucked
BYD is effectively banned in the US, along with all other Chinese vehicles.
Not surprised. American vehicle company will be bankrupt. Rented BYD in Asia, its quite luxurious tbh. They thought of lot of little things to make it comfy and better than even Tesla.
Chinese brands are dominating the Australian EV market. BYD has a multiple compelling options, MG with their MG4.
If my car was written off tomorrow I'd be test driving a BYD.
I'm not even aware of any American EV here despite a recently strong presence in the yank tank market (eg Ford ranger).
If a Ranger counts as a "Yank Tank", the monster trucks I see everywhere in Indiana would disgust you...
I traveled in one, in Germany last year. I was quite impressed. I did note a few minor concerns e.g. the stitching wasn't tight enough to be recessed. It will get damaged easily. The fact that my complaints are on that level says a lot, however.
And yes, they are on my "to buy" list, unlike Tesla.
it they are afraid the cheap cars will overcompete against the more expensive, bloated ev. its overpriced, newer ones around 40-50+k
IIRC it's not tariffs that are keeping BYD out. There's some kind of law that's preventing them from selling their cars in the United States all together. I may be wrong about this I just seem to remember reading something of that nature.
This is what you're thinking of:
No, that's still just a tariff. It also only applies to light trucks. Doing a negligible amount of googling brought up this:
In a nutshell, it was the tax credit. The law confirming the tax credit made it impossible for any foreign made electric vehicles to qualify for it. It is a protectionist scheme like the chicken tax, but implemented in a far different way.
On the plus side, if Trump axes the tax credit BYD may start selling in the US. Even with the ridiculously inflated tariffs, BYD is cheaper than a Tesla or other EV on the market.
It’s probably the same law that de facto bans French cars in the US.
I guess this is why every nation is scared of Chinese EV's. Do they meet Western safety standards?
Since they'll be selling it in Europe, they pretty much have to I guess?
Well I guess we will all be driving Chinese EVs soon.
If we're allowed to.
A version of this car will be in UK this year but for $L20k. Seems too much, but exact specs unreleased.
Later this year, it will launch in Europe as the Dolphin Surf, with expected prices starting under £20,000 ($26,000)
I wonder how large of a profit margin is BYD making in Europe.
I think they have a lot of airbags added. Side and middle including in the rear.
The BYD Dolphin in Australia for $32k AUD is pretty attractive for an entry level model too. The Toyota Camry Ascent hybrid is $45k AUD. I kind of prefer a hybrid as petrol is still everywhere, but that cheap Dolphin will suit many people.
