For me hearing songs I don't like that much make me appreciate the music I like even more.
Fuck AI
"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
When I get in the car and Tupac starts rapping about how I am going to the grocery store, the bank, and the liquor store and narrating every little thing that happens along the way only to realize that he narrated my entire afternoon in song... I'll know it's time to stomp on my phone and snip my internet.
Here's the thing I don't think its even that, if it infinitely personalized to what I want then I wouldn't have ever gone out of my comfort zone and discover other types of music I now like.
I would just be listening to infinite greenday like some sort of corpopunk purgatory.
Art is mlre than what's comfortable to you.
i wish there was a tool to detect AI music
That's one reason I left radio. Music chosen by an algorithm, as far back as the 80s.
Other reasons too, but that's another story.
finally, being way too much on rym pays off. Ive never needed the algorithm, all playlists are my own and idgaf about apple musics suggested ones.
no but all jokes aside its a huge fucking problem. Good reccomendations are an invaluablr service in the musical community, and the fleeting time in which it was possible to use the algorithm meaningfully to find new music relating to your tastes was actually great. Which is ofcourse also exactly why its such a big problem when ai becomes auditorily (talking about artifacting here) indistinguishable from human made, AND that they show up alongside the human made without clear distinction.
If you really care, thinking about this sstuff always pays off. Personally in the process of getting my collection self hosted on jellyfin or something. Untill then, im keeping a sharp eye on the streaming shenanigans
but also also, CHECK OUT INTERNET RADIO. Discovered it like a year ago. Its like tapping into a world wide community of music nerds. Very early internet vibes
check out 16bit.fm B.T.M and I.D.E.A for some really tasty ravish electronics or Groove.fm from brazil for some immaculate chill vibes. The dj hasnt gotten the hang of it yet, some of the most insane transitions ive heard in a while, but that just shows that theres an actual person in brazil rocking out and trying their best, and that just brightens my day every time.
Keep it real out there ✌️
We need to start building our own open source algorithms or we could just let humans curate playlists.
I still listen to music in the old ways. Random recommendations from friends, artisanally pirated and served off of a dedicated MP3 player device with wired headphones.
There's no way for AI music to sneak in.
Streaming services are going to be force feeding you this crap soon, it's way cheaper for them and enough people will keep subscribing to make it profitable.
is AI music very good though? good at what? at generic arrangements that render special into regular?
AI is now admittedly pretty good at making perfectly passable music, but the whole point of music is it's humanity. Music expresses emotion and feelings and connects the listener to the artist. It creates shared culture between fans.
AI music is interesting to me on a purely technical level and is more than acceptable background noise, but it'll never be more than that.
I don't want some infinite procedural music that will have no lasting effect past the first listen, no shared context between others. What's the point?
passable doesn't mean it's any better than a literal placeholder of something that should've been done. there is an entire field of computer music and specifically algorithmic music that makes AI music sound like it's not worth the hassle. Iannis Xenakis can fuck you up for real!
Not defending AI music, it can go and fuck itself no matter how neat of a trick it is. But let's not pretend that world wasn't already full of "placeholder" music from vacuous pop artists and some people who genuinely believed they had a personality.
yeah, Adorno wrote about it all the way back.
My idea of hell is hearing infinite music for the first time.
I like new music, but first listen is always the hardest. music grows on me - rare is the song that i love at first listen.
I have infinite personalized music at home. It's my guitar.
People that think like that seems to not engage with art enough;
Also, I really wanna see an AI bro try to make AI write lyrics like Caparezza's one, they won't be able lmao
not engage with art enough
Agreed. Sometimes i like background music when i am working, but infinite AI music is more like wallpaper than fine art.
Infinite personalized music would become the most boring ass shit ever. Because the system would continually just play what you like and what you like would become narrower and narrower and narrower until it's just the same sound over and over and over again.
There would be no listening to a randomized playlist that would occasionally pop in some new music from a new artist and the sound pops in your brain and you go "wow this is really amazing" and you discover a new song and sound that excites your brain. Instead you would just slowly become mentally numb listening to your infinite personalized slop.
Also completely misses the entire idea of fucking culture. How do you get a taste in "what you like"? YOU LISTEN TO WHAT OTHERS SHOW YOU!!! That's culture: SHARED experiences.
Goddamn. The kinds of people rooting for this idea where you only listen to what you like are definitely the same ones who think the best way to meet a date is through as app. The only surprising part is that the silent majority aren't angry enough to break their apathy yet.
Absolutely. I dumped Spotify and the rest a couple years ago and went back to an mp3 player. Since leaving streamers I've discovered so much more music than I ever did with the algorithms. My old "safe" music I used to listen to seems boring by comparison.
How are you discovering music now?
Lately mostly checking top album downloads in any genre, checking posts on Lemmy, and paying more attention. A side effect I wasn't expecting when I went to a music player (with wired headphones, the extra effort was part of the point) was my listening became much more deliberate. It's purposeful to listen to music now, and as a result I've become more aware of music in general. It's no longer just something to have on.
I've found a surprising number of artists from hearing a song on a TV show or movie (like Peacemaker, discovered Foxy Shazam). Music used to be background noise for me, now I actually hear it.
I'd guess about 75% of the music I've been listening to this year is different enough from what my normal taste used to be that an algorithm would have never shown me any of it. I went from "safe indie radio music" to Mongolian metal and Japanese synth lol.
Not only that but the entire social aspect of music is gone. It's a wonderful experience to find a person who has similar taste in music to me. I can talk about it for hours. That disappears if everyone is fed a personalized feed of extremely tailored music. If things keep going the way they are Gen Z to the Baby Boomers really did have the best childhoods. We're really making things worse for Gen Alpha on.
I like music by people who did drugs, computers can't do drugs.
"You wouldn't download a brick of China White"
I keep trying but its not working
Unzip the .tar file
Black .tar heroin
If you want infinite personalised music, you get an instrument, and learn to play your own.
I don't want something that was crafted to my taste. I want something so irresistibly unique that it redefines my taste.
This really is the heart of the entire AI pitch; a world where everything is comfortable and familiar and safe and easy and fucking sterile. A world where you never interact with other people because your agents do it for you. A world where you read, watch and listen to endless generic slop tuned to what your tastes were at the moment that you froze them in amber and stopped actually living. A world where digital sycophants tell you how to live and dress and act and what to order at the restaurant so that your mind will never be troubled by a stray thought.
Fucking Christ, I need to go listen to Angine de Poitrine to get the taste of this out of my mouth.
As a musician and composer, I will never ever use AI to make a single note of music, and will never listen to to AI music by choice. I want someone to put a little bit of their soul in every piece they create, just like I do. BTW, Tidal offers a AI music switch if you don't want any of that crap to reach your feed.
Why can't they figure out infinite personalized income instead?
If you told tech bros UBI is actually an AI based algorithm distributing money with the aim of stimulating the economy, they'd be all over it
Narcissistic little bastards
Infinite personalized happiness is narcotics injected straight into your bloodstream. Personalized happiness is the trivial null solution of multiplying by zero to solve an equation. It is achieving thermodynamic equilibrium indistinguishable from a static cold dead rock. The more interesting feat is achieving a dynamic happiness and harmonic responsive to the comings and goings of diverse and varied travelers, none of whom are guaranteed to be safe, and for that, are made all the more interesting.
There very much are people who view music as background noise and only listen to walmart radio-esque drivel. I remember hearing that an acquaintance listened to "whatevers on the front page of spotify" and has never made a playlist or noted a song/band as better or worse than any other.
"personalised music" is like hearing my own opinion 24/7, sooner or later it will become an echo chamber. It's like create someone who can relate to you, it's unhealthy.
Those idiots probably never to listen to a local cover band in the pub. They don't get the whole human experience, I reckon.
