Can’t make me buy that swill anymore. It can collect dust on a shelf.

[–] imvii@lemmy.ca 11 points 2 days ago

I don't want their booze, their diarrhea lettuce, or their super hero movies. We're continuing this boycott until the US gets their shit together.

[–] ironpangolin29@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the year long ban in place has allowed me to find other liquors I learned to enjoy.

Turns out a year is all you need to develop an acquired taste.

If you insult a nations sovereignty and identity, the boycott is stronger 10 fold.

[–] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 62 points 3 days ago

Seems like solid advice.

[–] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 36 points 2 days ago

Between all of the bullshit tariffs, retaliation, and trade-war nonsense Trump has instigated around the world, the Canadian liquor boycott seems to be LITERALLY the only one having the intended effect.

Keep it up.

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 days ago

I don't buy booze but if I do, I won't.

[–] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 33 points 3 days ago

Easy enough.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 31 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I honestly have not missed it… the only thing Murican booze I used to buy was Jean Bean and mostly for my Bourbon BBQ sauces… easily replaced

California wines could be good but there are plenty to choose from… don't even notice the "smaller selection"

American beers? please, I stopped drinking piss water a couple of decades ago

[–] bajabound@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you don't start buying bud light again we're sending kid rock to sing in your front yard.

[–] AbsolutelyNotAVelociraptor@piefed.social 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Woah, easy there Satan. I've seen people get punched in the face for much lighter threats.

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Some pretty solid Canadian bourbon out there. They don't have a monopoly on corn whisky. If they let NAFTA totally lapse, they even lose the exclusive name rights.

[–] augustus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Honestly none of the Canadian "bourbons" are any good yet. But I've just switched to other stuff.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Canadian bourbon is an oxymoron. Technically nothing can be a bourbon unless it is produced in the United States, as there are more strict rules on bourbon than most types of alcohol. Can only contain certain things in certain proportions, and also has to be made in the US. So Canadian “bourbon” is just Canadian whisky made following the guidelines for producing a bourbon. Its like how scotch has to be made in Scotland or true champagne has to come from a champagne house in France

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I thought it has to be from Kentucky. I learned something today.

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It makes sense to think so, but yeah you can actually have a true bourbon from Hawai’i or Puerto Rico or something under the legal definition. So long as its made in the US it can be a bourbon, no matter how far from Kentucky

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Ah ok thanks

[–] rbos@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That rule is part of NAFTA. If NAFTA is repealed, bourbon doesn't have special status anymore and we can just use the name again.

We lose "Canadian Whisky" but who gives a fuck about that.

Tequila has the same protection. You can't call your agave liquor "tequila" outside of México unless NAFTA goes.

[–] comrademiao@piefed.social -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Jim Beam is nasty by any standards, its also a Japanese company.

America has a massive selection of beers, thinking pissweiser is beer is on you, not America, pal.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

you can keep your beers bud, we got it covered up here

[–] skeezix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

75% tarriff for you with that attitude pal.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 0 points 22 hours ago

make it 120… it won't make a difference

[–] West_of_West@piefed.social 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

This will change my life not at all.

I go to a private liquor store that didn't get rid of US booze. I just avoided it.

[–] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you guys have public(ally owned) booze shops?

[–] West_of_West@piefed.social 6 points 2 days ago

In BC most liquor stores are government owned, but private ones also exist.

[–] glibg@lemmy.ca 13 points 2 days ago

Wab is based, drink local folks.

[–] FreeBooteR69@lemmy.ca 21 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't drink anymore, just lost interest as i got older and don't miss it. It's an easy fuck you with no effort on my part.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Same. I’ll have a beer now and then, but there’s so many small breweries these days it’s easy to avoid the American ones.

Also, now that I don’t drink to get drunk any more, I’m willing to pay more for better beer.

[–] Unleaded8163@fedia.io 19 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The only US alcohol I like is Bourbon. I recently discovered BRBN from the Okanogan, and now I can't think of any I would miss.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I haven't found any but I've been looking for just that one. It's good?

[–] Unleaded8163@fedia.io 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I got the cheapest one my liquor store had and it's great. Maybe not quite as nice as my favourite from the US (Buffalo Trace), but still very good. I'd like a chance to sample all their bourbon like offerings, but I don't drink a lot or often, so unless I go to the distillery, that will take a very long time.

[–] comrademiao@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Buffalo Trace

This is quite mid at best, only hyped up...

[–] ProudCanadianCitizen@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

I am sure the management that is responsible for stocking the shelves will be very hesitant about restocking with expensive American booze until the dust settles and they know which way the consumer is leaning, no matter what Carney asks for. Business is business, politics is politics.

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oops, dropped. Oops, dropped it. Oops, dropped it. Oops, dropped it. Oops, dropped it.

And oh, it's really cold outside which is why my friends and I are wearing balaclavas... Oops, dropped it.

Sorry, let me help you clean this up. Man, these gloves are just so slippe- Oops, slipped. Man, what a mess.

[–] sirxdaemon@lemmy.ca 37 points 3 days ago (1 children)

While cathartic in the moment, product insurance means the alcohol would be of less value just sitting on the shelves.

Don't waste your energy on ruining the American economy. Americans can do that much better. Spend your energy and money on Canada instead.

[–] YellowParenti@lemmy.wtf 8 points 3 days ago

You'd be more productive sending trump DMs saying "Iran is disrespecting the fuck out of you. I wouldn't take that if I was you. You don't wanna look like a loser, do you?" More likely to ruining the economy that way

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

I wonder how Doug pour-the-whisky Ford would spin this. 😅

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 2 points 2 days ago

I do love storeclerks who either hang out a list or two or put stuff in a dusty little dark corner.

Yet, Kinew maintains a trade office in Washington for $1m annually. Seems like an odd paradox.

“Yet you live in a society, interesting.”

[–] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes I do. I also live in a country. It would be great if premiers could put country over their specific province. Being united makes us stronger.

[–] SreudianFlip@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

cf.

If you want unity, maybe drop the trollish style?

In most cases, you are not legally required to pay for something you break in a store.

Stores have shrinkage insurance for accidental breakage.

With that said, a visitor coming into a store, "bumping" into that American bottle, and leaving, can be a very normal experience. A hundred people doing it every day for a week will suddenly make American liquor difficult/impossible to restock because of how accident-prone it is.

[–] ikidd@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's already paid for by the store, then they need to buy more to replace it. All this does is sell more Yank whiskey.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 1 points 2 days ago

Will they?

Suddenly this line item doesn't create a profit.
