Hello everyone!

I am planning on having a recital in July with my students. Due to the fact that Canada Day will have just passed, I thought it would be good of me to prepare a couple of unofficial anthems of Canada to perform. Meaning, if there were some songs out there that would encapsulate Canada, please list them here!

Please keep in mind that it should sound good without the words (ie, unfortunately Classified's, "Oh Canada" will not work) and hopefully be appropriate for all ages.

I was thinking recently that while I shifted my buying habits pretty drastically for things like groceries (to buy local and Canadian if possible), I kept the same habits for books, video games, etc.

Is there somewhere here that would be good for posting things like discussions about Canadian-made art/lit/games? Not so much in a 'buy Canadian' sense as in a 'Talk about Canadian-made culture' kinda way.

If there isn't something like this already I could create a community, though hopefully I wouldn't end up the only person posting there... If I did make one I was thinking it could be for both recent things and nostalgic/retro Cancon. (Growing up, there were cool things like Reboot or 3D animated shorts on YTV that were Canadian.)

The federal NDP is struggling right now. What if they were to say, “yenno, fuck it, we’re straight up 100% socialist. Our platform is now that there can be no private ownership of the means of production, all workplaces are democratically run, etc.”? Would this help revitalize the party, or would it cause people to distance themselves even more? What is the state of public opinion on this right now, in your assessment?

my friend group has been talking about this on and off, and frankly I'm sick of talking about Canadians and would rather talk to Canadians.

It's my best estimation that Canadians would welcome closer cooperation, less reliance on the US and strong ties with the EU.

But for Federalists like me, the "ever closer union" the EU is supposed to be, should continue to improve (european institutions are far from perfect) but ultimatly become a single entity, basically a Federal Republic of Europe. And this is what, I believe, Canadians would balk at and I would not want a new EU member if they are resistant to this goal.

But there are, of course, exceptional benefits to being part of it and of becoming a single European Republic. I would not be a federalist if I did not believe that all member states would very much benefit from being just one of many federal states in this imagined European Republic. I just don't think that Canadians are actually ready for this.

Am I wrong about that? My friends think that if I can see how much we would benefit, why wouldn't you? Would you give up the Canadian Dollar, some sovereignity and the ultimate say about what happens to Canada to have an equal, representative and fair place at the table of a transpolar political entity. I mean... the canadian population is half that of Germany, Canada would be in fifth place in terms of voting power in that Union.

Personally I think it's a nice talking point to shock USians and it's a nice point to make a warm and fuzzy atmosphere in the room when Canada and the EU hammer out agreements to benefit both of us (middle powers etc.), but I do not think it's in any way realistic. What do you think?

Wow, this got a lot of responses and I'm sorry I cannot respond to all of you. So let me just say this:

I feel honored by you all taking the time to respond and I'm picking up that there is a deep well of mutual affection and respect between the EU and Canada, which is lovely.

Having read all of your comments, I remain convinced that full formal membership would not really be the right relationship for both sides. But there is definitely a strong, mutual wish for very close cooperation based on common values and respect as partners. I think both Canada and the EU are really fed up with being treated as imperial vassal states by the US and can help each other strengthen our positions as middle-powers through various cooperation agreements while keeping canadian sovereignty intact.

Municipal? Regional? Provincial? Federal?

I keep seeing news about separatist movement in Alberta. My understanding is that some of their cities do not align with the province.

**Could a city, Edmonton for example, start a separatist movement to stay in Canada? **

On the same note, if the separatists win by a small margin, are they going to force it down to the rest of the population that want to stay Canadian? Or are they going to divide the province land with Canada?

My wife is Canadian and her parents still live in Quebec but she hasn’t lived in Canada in a couple decades. Her parents are getting older now and I’ve been thinking it might be helpful to put a Canadian eSIM as a second line on her phone so she can get calls more easily from agencies/hospitals/doctors/etc. Often these groups will say they can call a US number or they don’t know if it will work (I think it’s more confusing since the US and Canada share the same country code), but only sometimes will she get calls, so I think it might be helpful to have a more local number.

Does anyone have experience doing that, or at least have suggestions for brands to look at? I’ve heard Canadians complain for years about how expensive mobile phone plans are compared to the US or Europe and I’ve seen the same as I started looking. Since this is something we’d only be using occasionally I think a prepaid/pay-as-you-go plan might make more sense than a standard monthly service. When we talk to her parents or other family and friends up there we typically use FaceTime or WhatsApp, so it would really only be for trying to help with their care.

Hello Canadians

Me and my partner will spend two weeks in the Rocky Mountains (southern BC). What is the best app for looking up trails? I saw that the national parks provide some information but besides that there doesn't seem to be some kind of official hiking map. My fear is that there will be a lot of people on the well-known trails in the national parks.
