Yogscast are one of those things that when I stumble upon them, it gives me this immense feeling of nostalgia and also sadness. Time flies.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yogscast

Don't they still exist?

[–] mrbutterscotch@feddit.org 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, if I'm not totally wrong they started posting again a little while ago. But I primarily watched them in my younger years, so they remind me of that time.

[–] Cavemanfreak@programming.dev 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They never stopped! They just changed focus from Minecraft

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

And now they're back to Minecraft. I think was the one to note that all the mods were getting pretty samee back in the day and they just kinda got bored with it all. Which y'know fair enough.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I think there's some controversy at some point and they never really came back after that. Like weren't they going to make their own game or something and then basically someone just stole all the money and left.

[–] Cavemanfreak@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

That happened, and they had their own me too and ousted a couple of people. But they are still going strong! They have just moved away from minecraft as their main focus

the children yearn for the mines

[–] MissesAutumnRains@lemmy.blahaj.zone 38 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Doubly true because the children yearn for the mines.

[–] Senseless@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Off into the acid mines we go.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 19 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

There's a pretty cool youtube channel of a girl digging a basement under her house. So what I'm saying is: there's a man in all of us

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 14 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah thinking about it there's quite a few YouTube channels that basically revolve around I dug a hole for no reason.

There's the one where the guy basically excavated a basement for himself, and there's also one where someone's digging a mineshaft for no particularly good reason they just feel like it. They have to get it cleared by the city so some official had to come along and be like "yeah I guess it's fine, but why?"

Also Colin Furze who dug a bunker under his backyard and now a car elevator under his drive way

Also Colin Furze who dug a bunker under his backyard and now a car elevator under his drive way

A secret bunker, no less. A big part of the initial project was to see if he could build a secret tunnel from his house to his shed without his neighbour being aware of it. I think by the time he was on to the car elevator he'd given up on that element of it though.

Dude, that scene in Breaking Bad where Jesse and Mike go get their stolen product back from meth users and Jesse just gets one of the guys in on randomly digging a hole in their backyard was gold

By burying yourself in dirt?

No, that's how babies aren't made.

I was still young when I first stayed out too late one evening fucking around with some friends in the neighborhood and my mom grounded me when I got home. Trouble was she didn't realize that "grounding" someone is an idiom and I thought she was going to bury me alive. Pretty sure she didn't understand why I was crying.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 39 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

"I made you, I can unmake you."

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do I have a sibling I didn't know about?

"I brought you in this world, I can take you out of it."

[–] Malfeasant@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Pretty common thing to say among white trash moms (and very possibly among non-white trash moms too, but my experience is limited...)

[–] captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I grew up with that idiom and understanding what it meant, and then I went to flight school where being grounded has a more literal meaning. So my question: Was the childhood punishment named after disqualification from flight status or was the term in use before 1903 with a different origin?

Etymonline entry for ground

Seems like it was used for pilots in the 1930s and extended to "deny privileges" in the 40s

Dickens used room-ridden

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 53 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

My parents couldn't use that line with me. I was a scout; I'd just make a leanto and get a merit badge. 😤

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 11 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

leanto

For anyone wondering, it's not a spanish fried food that rhymes with esperanto

[–] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 2 weeks ago

I had a similar situation as a kid, but I moved into the attic for the night with flashlights and a gameboy. They ended up calling the cops because they thought I ran away. Then I really got in trouble!

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I feel like there was an episode of Malcolm in the Middle like this, but just with Reese. But it’s been a long time since I’ve watched it.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 19 points 2 weeks ago

Different episode?

Reese and Malcom are throwing a football in the house. Lois tells them to stop.

They end up leaning out of two windows, throwing the ball while technically 'inside the house.'

Reese = This isn't fun any more."

Malcom ="Shut up, Reese. We're making a point here!"

Kids will always find the most complicated way to avoid the simplest task 😭

[–] orbitz@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

As a kid cleaning sucked, as an adult not cleaning feels like my parade of shame. Gotta keep some level of tidyness though it varies on who may stop by.

[–] jack_of_sandwich@lemmy.sdf.org 9 points 2 weeks ago

Campout sounds much more fun than cleaning my room.

I mean the kids are smarter than the mother here, because the kids think logically meanwhile the mother demands things without explaining them.

The Castle is an awesome movie.
