"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Oh, did the trillion dollar industry with NO PRODUCT AND NO USE CASE overestimate their growth?

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

They aren't admitting that, they are throwing fits that the world isn't burning enough coal and gas to keep up with them, and that we need to give up land from federal lands, e.g get rid of those useless national parks and give it to us for more data centers bro...

Oh and while they can't have power to even power it, they really should stockpile all that crap anyway, just in case.

They are insufferably entitled.

"We just gonna need a government handout now--for the future!"

For those wondering, it's rather obvious to me the whole energy talk was directed at fossil fuels. NVidia wants more fossil fuel plants.

I'll never buy another Nvidia product and windows will not be on my next PC.

You won't regret it.

I originally switched from AMD to nvidia because of driver quality.

Last gen I got a 7900XTX when it launched. Turns out the tables have turned. AMD drivers are now much higher quality than nvidias.

I would agree nvidia has better hardware in terms of performance per watt, but even then it's a mixed bag. A doesn't get you anywhere if the drivers prevent you from using that performance.

I'll continue to buy AMD until the situation changes.

I am beyond happy with my 9070 XT. I will never touch another Nvidia product as long as I live.

Why wait with windows? You can switch right now. Your currently computer would probably run faster too, as uninstalling windows means uninstalling bloat.

Might wanna lead with: "Your every keystroke is no longer being spied on by fascists!"

It’s not trivial to move everything over to a new device (which installing a new OS would effectively be). I waited about a year to install Linux as I was going to upgrade my computer and didn’t want to two of these moves in such a narrow time

[–] not_me@piefed.social -4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Its 13 min. to install linux, update included

[–] bingrazer@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Installing Linux doesn’t magically transfer over all your files. My comment did not reference the time taken to install Linux. Additionally, for a first time Linux user, it may not be immediately clear where certain things, like mods or save files for games need to go.

EDIT: you’d also have to install and set up all your software (independent of which OS you install). None of this is particularly difficult, but it takes time and you need to think about it in advance to avoid missing a bunch of files or programs

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You actually could "magically" transfer all of your files depending upon your computer is configured. If you have enough free space, you could potentially partition it differently and install Linux on a secondary partition and be able to mount your old partition in Linux. Or you could install Linux on a secondary hard drive (internal or external) and run it from there.

Well, you can learn how to do that now, or later.

Yeah I'm just gonna not buy anything, no games, no nothing, until this blows over.

[–] EvilFonzy@lemmy.world 48 points 2 days ago (3 children)

It's fucked up that AI killed gaming as one of my hobbies. I just can't support this industry anymore.

[–] BennyTheExplorer@lemmy.world 37 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not true at all. There are still a lot of great indie games if you look behind the curtain a little bit.

Don't be so pessimistic, because that will truly ruin gaming. Just support indie devs, that are still committed to making great games in a human way. And believe me, there are still a lot of them out there.

[–] EvilFonzy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I'd love the opportunity to keep supporting indie developers, but the issue now is that the platform owners are actively removing consumers from the system so they can rent us access. That's too far of a bridge for me, friend. I'm not being negative just sad and frustrated.

[–] 5in1k@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

I just modded a ps2 with 2tb if games on a hard drive. You can be in the hobby without giving gaming companies money.

[–] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Could you please not punish games for that? I am OK with boycotting NVIDIA, though.

How about you buy HW of VALVe and games which run on it flawlessly?

This is also a form of boycotting NVIDIA and Microsoft.

[–] Wigglesworth@retrolemmy.com 9 points 1 day ago

If the publisher isn't EA, Betheada, Nintendo, Ubisoft or Sony.

Capcom: w-what about me?

You're cool, Kojima can come too.

[–] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They could just… sell us some…

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What would we do with them?

Ai GPUs are not the same as consumer GPUs - they're not PCIe x16 cards, they in fact don't even have a socket format... They're generally supplied onboard motherboards in a blade-format prefab server build.

[–] picnic@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

I have had grid gpus. I'd love to have a few accelerators.

I wouldn’t mind having a local LLM or GenAI

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I would only accept them if they were 75% off msrp or more.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure thing, that datacenter GPU is now like 3000 dollars....

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Probably closer to 6k. Datacenter GPUs start at around 25 grand a pop.

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My take over him calling it "vilified energy" is that he wants go build coal power plants.

[–] kopasz7@sh.itjust.works 34 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Also his mention of nuclear is a red herring, those plants take up to a decade to build. He's definitely thinking of fossil fuels, hence the notion of vilifying.
