Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

For so long we have always referred back to Nazi Germany as the last massive fascist and authoritarian takeover, but with America at the gates ready to go full fascist, the Germans must atleast be relieved that in a few years we will be talking about MAGA America instead of Nazi Germany.

W for the Germans I suppose.

No, I imagine Germans are not happy. I imagine they're as sad as anybody that America failed to learn from Germany's mistakes. Only the extremely selfish and narcissistic would go "hey my country looks better now because another country is committing atrocities"

[–] Jumi@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Are you seriously downplaying the Holocaust and world war 2?

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 19 hours ago

what do you mean ready to go full fascist? They're already there.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 130 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Believe it or not, we'd prefer no fascists anywhere.

[–] saimen@feddit.org 5 points 8 hours ago

Yeah, this whole thought process is such an american way of thinking and an image of what's wrong with the US.

This is not a popularity contest in high school.

In contrast germans are terrified whats happening in the US because they are much more aware of their past and clearly see the analogies and what all this can lead to.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Glad it was already said, and by an actual German no less!

I was going to say "If I know Germans, they're not happy. They'd rather leave fascism in the past and not have it exist anywhere. Also, whatever new government exists in the future, they'd like it to be really efficient, but also have triplicate paperwork. Which is somehow filled out easier than most single sheet forms."

But then you came in, and summed up everything I was going to say.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

Except those Germans who still think being a Nazi is great. Of which there's a whole Eastern Germany worth of.

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

This is the correct response.

exactly what a Nazi would say

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

For sure, but, I mean, if there had to be some, glad it ain't here, amiright?

I'm German and terrified. I find it difficult to grasp that the playbook that was used in Nazi Germany is right there to compare, how the whole thing happened has been taught in schools to several generations in a row, there's memorial places to visit - the whole wealth of information is there so it doesn't happen again!!

And here we are, and it is happening again - in what seems an even more overt way than old Adolf ever dared to pull off. They just built a concentration camp in Florida and are loudly bragging about it. People are randomly being kidnapped from the street, based not even on their immigration status but their skin color, by groups of unidentified thugs. All while the media - even international media - still seem to be unable to call "Fascism" to what is happening.

I would have hoped that us being the eternal Nazis would at least have a deterring effect on other people to not fall into the same trap.

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 7 hours ago

does German media report much about American fascism and (getting my hopes up) Germans calling America out for it?

[–] Fleur_@aussie.zone 3 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I think it's partly that people think you can stop fascism with robust political structures and by cracking down hard on fascists. That approach doesn't work, so long as the material conditions that lead to fascism exist it will come about.

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 7 hours ago

I'm not actually sure what does work to stop fascism, considering the multiple fronts that fascism is mounting worldwide

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 28 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I'm fine with being reminded of our country's past again and again if it means others don't do the same bullshit.

[–] TranquilTurbulence@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

I think there are also some interesting similarities with Mussolini. Just think of the role media played. Trump was really active on Twitter, while Mussolini used Il Popolo d'Italia newspaper to spread his message.

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 6 points 1 day ago

And other countries - including Germany ofc - are copying it.

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world -1 points 19 hours ago

It all started again with the 'I didn't do that, how long have we got to apologize?!' mindset.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unfortunately the AFD in Germany got record aupport in the last election.

[–] dumbass@quokk.au 8 points 20 hours ago

Germany sees America go full nazi.

Germany: Hold my over sized beer!

I think Putin and Netanyahu are a lot further along on this path. We will be spoiled for choice of places to refer back to.

[–] bestboyfriendintheworld@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Israel has actual protests against the government ongoing. It’s not clear if Netanyahu will manage to win the next election.

There are no protests in Russia at all and elections are a farce.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

"Damn, hella dangerous in here. Better cancel elections until the war is over. Can't have our innocent civilians gathering at a voting place"

What country are you talking about?

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Horrified seems more likely

[–] db2@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They are, Germans today don't fuck around with that, they punish it heavily like the US should have.

[–] hitmyspot@aussie.zone 5 points 18 hours ago

Unless it's Israel. Then, they confuse antisemitism with valid criticism of genocide, due to guilt over the Holocaust.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

The Americans DID punish fascism severely. My grandfather stormed the beaches on D-Day. He lost his best friend from grade school. They were barely out of high school.

As for the Americans of today? I don't consider maga to be American. Just like I don't consider confederates to be Americans.

[–] Muffinmampfer@feddit.org 46 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Actually as a german it does feel pretty shitty to see fascism rise in America and all around the world…

Even here in Germany the far right is growing stronger and it feels like history repeating.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I mean, Merz is pretty fucking right wing.

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, but Spahn is the real danger (besides AfD, of course).

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Nah, Merz is just as dangerous.

And already has a proven track record of willingly and knowingly voting with then you further his "ideas"

I’m gonna guess that most Germans aren’t actually viewing the situation as a zero-sum game. So no, I don’t think the US breaking bad is going to make Germans happier, in general.

[–] maxwells_daemon@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because everything everyone thinks everywhere is always about america...

[–] saimen@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

Yeah, like why should we germans even be bothered by US Americans talking about Nazi Germany? We talk about it even more ourselves anyways.

[–] robocall@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

America also supplying the bombs for Israel to genocide Palestinians

[–] match@pawb.social 2 points 7 hours ago

Europe's not free from that

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

At least he'll be out in three and a half years

[–] Benedict_Espinosa@europe.pub 2 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

He may be not out, and he also may be replaced by someone even worse, as difficult as that may be to imagine now.

[–] Flax_vert@feddit.uk 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn't America not have a rule where they can only serve two terms? Does this count as his second? or is it only for consecutive terms?

[–] Benedict_Espinosa@europe.pub 2 points 8 hours ago

They do. It's two terms period, no matter if they're consecutive or not. It's even in the constitution, but Trump has already proved by now that he doesn't care about the laws, including the constitution.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm not holding my breath on that, given how nobody is holding him accountable for shit and being allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants; the rule of law be damned.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 18 hours ago

even if he is out 3.5years he is already doing so much damage.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

At one of his nazi rallies, he told his sheep out loud that “when [he] wins, you’ll never have to vote again.”
