we're making updates to better match how people discover trending content today by shifting away from one all-encompassing Trending list towards category-specific charts that we’ll continue to invest in over time.

Lol. I only ever go to my subscriptions page.

[–] Zomg@lemmy.world 20 points 18 hours ago

The trending page stopped being worth looking at once it shifted away from actual trending content. That content was replaced with ad friendly corporate videos like Kimmel and family vloggers you've never heard of.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 33 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

When you're logged out the main page is blank. It's glorious. Thanks EU!

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 8 hours ago

I do enjoy this but I didn't realize I had the EU to thank!

After you watched a first video though it seems to have no problem remembering what your browser fingerprint has watched before.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 18 hours ago

don't they just wanna turn that into the "everything" page? I get the feeling that Youtube and sites like it would rather us watch what they want rather than what we want.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

they doing that to stop all the scrapers like newpipe from "working".

shit is hilarious.

fuck you Google.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 9 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

How's that gonna break NewPipe and the likes? Surely they don't rely solely on the Trending page to get videos and such. I can see unpopular videos as well.

Sure, that could break their Trending pages. But they can then adapt by adopting the different Trending categories, innit? Make it a drop-down on the Trending page to select a category and avoid cluttering other parts of the interface with all the options

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago

it won't, but it's clearly a deterrent. a pathetic one at that.

[–] yumyumsmuncher@feddit.uk 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

unhook is amazing, it blocked unrelated ragebait and tripophobic content randomly popping up on my searches

[–] Jaaaardvark@lemmy.zip 7 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Oh, also pair it with https://dearrow.ajay.app/ to crowdsource de-ragebaiting titles/thumbnails (from the maker of Sponsorblock)

[–] MITM0@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Meanwhile report every video that has a click-baity title or thumbnail

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Could that be the first actual improvement in years?

I'm sure they're gonna replace it with something even more asinine but my god, the trending page was always just a cesspool of the absolute worst content on YouTube (with a few exceptions every now and then).

[–] balder1991@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

They might, once it becomes too flooded with AI slop.

[–] vxx@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

Shorts are annoying, but now they started cluttering the subscription page with community posts.

It's bad, but especially when you browse in landscape Mode on a phone. They get blown up so big you have to scroll like 3 pages for one post, and there's a lot of them.

And they will stay on your page forever and wont go away. No option to click them away at all.

[–] evilcultist@sh.itjust.works 86 points 1 day ago

It’s too hot for that and I don’t think Google should control what people wear.

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 37 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I keep hiding shorts but it keeps coming back like herpes

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 17 hours ago

Revanced if you're on Android

[–] IndiBrony@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I do the range to those fucking YouTube game things. Stupid things

Same. I actually truly hate seeing the games pop up, so ugly and generic looking

[–] Klear@sh.itjust.works 3 points 20 hours ago

Hell yeah! It's way too hot even for those.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Use browser plug-ins and revanced.

[–] darkevilmac@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

I've installed user scripts to replace the player with the normal one and used unlock to hide the feed in my subscriptions page. Did the same with revanced on my phone.

They're just designed to be addictive, I wasn't getting anything out of them.

[–] tahoe@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Shorts (as a format) aren’t the problem, it’s what you watch. If you train the algorithm to serve you garbage, then of course it’s gonna serve you garbage ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I literally never watch shorts. I’ve selected the option to show less shorts on my computer, I select the not interested option on each individual video on my TV when the row of them shows up, and they still constantly come back.

[–] flameguy21@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago

It blows my mind how popular shorts are because I've never had an interest in watching them.

[–] Hack3900@lemy.lol 8 points 1 day ago

Shorts as a format are a problem, infinite scroll is just too addictive and having a format that encourages grabbing your attention in the first milliseconds even more than normal videos drags quality down

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 13 points 1 day ago

Search is unusable because of shorts. Also I want the ability to turn them off.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I spend hours on YouTube every single day and I have no clue what a "trending page" is.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 8 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

I'm not sure how you can be so invested in YouTube and not at least be aware of trending. Have I ever looked at it? Not intentionally. Am I aware of it? Yeah.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 4 points 13 hours ago

When I open YouTube it gives me an edless feed of recommendations tailored to me. I don't care what other people are watching. If there's a tab with the title "trending" I've probably just never clicked it. I'm not even tempted to go see.

[–] JakenVeina@midwest.social 4 points 21 hours ago (1 children)
  • Always check the Subscriptions page first
  • Check Watch Later list, after that
  • scroll the Home page, after that

Have never seen a link to a "Trending" page or a "Trending Now" list in any of those spots.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago

I have YouTube bookmarked to go directly to subscriptions and I have revanced configured to open directly to subscriptions. I've still seen trending as a tab in the sidebar on the website, and accidentally tapped on it back before vanced existed.

All of that said, I did just check and it's way more difficult to find now. It's near the bottom of the sidebar in browser, and iirc it used to have its own frustratingly dedicated tab in the mobile app, which it no longer does.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

I worked at YouTube and use it constantly. I knew about it. But I just never used it. Because it was always garbage.

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Ahh yes, the brainrot feed.

[–] rumimevlevi@lemmings.world 36 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Great, trending videos are generally completely trash

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Knowing Youtube they will start drizzling them into your search results instead or something equally terrible.

[–] Joelk111@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Occasionally a video I like will get to trending and I'll question my taste in media.

[–] three@lemmy.zip 0 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

True. I know this person and they speak for every single person that uses YouTube.

[–] AlphaOmega@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

I've never used that feature....

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Good. Can my Watch Later list please be the most important item I see when I go there?

[–] paraphrand@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, cover your shame.

Logged out YouTube was covered up a few years ago.

[–] SinningStromgald@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Does this mean I will have to scroll even more if I want to go to a specific channel I am subscribed to? All i want on the left is History and the list of channels I am subscribed to.

[–] 52fighters@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just use RSS to follow specific channels.

[–] jet@hackertalks.com 3 points 22 hours ago

Freetube does this really well

[–] derin@lemmy.beru.co 2 points 1 day ago

The trending page is separate from subscriptions.
