A group of Florida Democratic state lawmakers was blocked from entering the Alligator Alcatraz immigrant detention facility in the Everglades Thursday, despite citing legal authority for an official legislative site visit.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried issued a statement following the incident, saying, "Lawmakers on the ground were just blocked from entering a state-funded detention site because of so-called 'safety concerns.' This is a taxpayer-funded facility, run by the State of Florida. Our elected officials have every legal right to walk through those gates."

Fried added, "What are Ron DeSantis and his administration trying to hide? If it's unsafe for lawmakers to visit, how is it safe for anyone inside?"

Just wait for the next hurricane to destroy that POS

[–] Octavio@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

Within a year they’ll be allowed in but not out.

[–] DominatorX1@thelemmy.club 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

As lawmakers you can bring the local sherrifs to press your case.

why do you think they built in in florida? local sheriff won't help democrat lawmakers

[–] burgerpocalyse@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

the death camp is completely off the grid. it runs on generators, has no plumbing, and is already flooding with the most basic rainstorm Florida has to offer. my only hope is that the losers who choose to work there suffer as much as their victims

Alligator Auschwitz. Get some cojones, fuckers.

[–] mriswith@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

American media is in the "if we say it out loud, it'll become true" phase.

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They're not wrong, but it will become true regardless, so it's kinda irrelevant.

[–] mriswith@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The big thing is that admitting earlier could prevent it going as far as it has in the past.

Cowards, along with their voters who allow this feckless posturing.

Korean lawmakers were climbing fences and grabbing guns out of the hands of law enforcement in response to something not even half as serious.

Show up armed or with an armed security force, you goddamn clowns. This isn’t 2004 GWB shit. You’re standing up to Nazis, or you aren’t.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

This photo is so fucking badass. Representative straight up throwing herself into the line of fire.

[–] Carmakazi@lemmy.world 105 points 2 days ago (3 children)

The SK soldiers' hearts were not in it. They were given orders, but nobody was actually going to do anything to stop the Parliament from getting in, and everyone knew it.

MAGA thugs are absolutely willing to use violence against Democrat lawmakers. They already have.

Given your post history, I already know what your reply will be, but post it anyway.

[–] dovahking@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Still, they did it unarmed. Your country has more guns than people. Those thugs just kidnap and take anyone they want. At least use your guns for self defence.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They say that, but MAGAs are cowards at their core. Let's see if they will actually fire on elected officials who are simply doing their jobs. I doubt they will.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

A dude in my state executed his neighbor because he thought his neighbor might vote for a Democrat. It wasn't some aggravated argument, the neighbor was just out mowing his grass.

I absolutely believe the thugs who are going around kidnapping people would have no qualms with smashing a boot into a democrats face or straight up mag-dumping the second the person tries to force their way inside.

Then grab the guns and see if they fire. If they do, then civil war it is. Let these MAGA fucks fire the first shot and then the last will be fired when they're lined up against the wall.

They need to stop doing this type of thing. Maybe it's time they show up with their own armed security and force their way in. I don't know. Something.

Democrat leaders showing up and getting arrested or sent away is not a good look. It's like instilling learned obedience. They need to actually do something instead of showing up knowing they're going to get punched in the face just so they can highlight how mean the Republicans are. If they are showing up to inspect then they need the legal knowledge and have the power to see it through.

The Republicans backed by legal minds at groups like heritage foundation are leveraging the law. Do these Democrats not have their own legal teams and groups researching how to get things done?

It's leaving me feeling like this is all theater

[–] BrianTheeBiscuiteer@lemmy.world 48 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They need to find a way to go after the agents. Get arrested and then file suit against them. It'll get their names in public record too.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes like there needs to be a serious investigation if they ever get back in power.

Oh shit it makes sense now why they cover their faces.

If they showed their face then there is a chance they could be held accountable later on. I mean I know that was the underlining thing but now that I'm thinking that there could be a future investigation to hold them accountable that there is possibly no fucking way. It's not like people on the street recording them illegally kidnapping people can be used since they're completely covered.

Our representatives should just bring a posse of 30 armed guards and force their way into the trafficking centers. The Trump Regime, like all bullies, only respects power.

[–] regedit@feddit.online 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bonus points if all or most of the armed guards are large, 6'5"+ linebacker sized black dudes looking like they're ready for a fight!

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

A mixed group would be better. It shuts down a lot of propaganda spins. It needs to be hard to spin as anything other than patriots Vs fascists (particularly not black Vs white).

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Anyone going to tell me I'm just a "gloom and doomer" and decency will prevail?

Fuck that. The United States is a fascist nation. It's our new reality. The lives we lived are over. Resist your fascist masters PEACEFULLY and LEGALLY by preserving history, literature, and science that might be destroyed by the regime.

One day they will destroy themselves. Most of us won't live to see it. But those who are there, will need to rebuild. They'll need the things that are being burned.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Resist your fascist masters PEACEFULLY and LEGALLY

I disagree. Fight fascism with everything you've got.

the whole point is fascism is that you can't fight it legally.

there are legal ways to resist, but the state is the law and fighting the state will be illegal.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't agree with peaceful resistance.

if i can't have peace, why should they?

[–] illegible@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 day ago

If Trump has his way I’m sure they’ll be getting to know the place soon enough.

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cowards. you've obviously got something to hide and you're afraid to show it

blocked from entering a state-funded detention site because of so-called ‘safety concerns.’

don't believe that cover story one bit lol

if it's too dangerous for visitors it is not suitable for human habitation

"denied access" doesn't sound like they showed up ready to do anything about the place, fucking sad

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So arrest the people preventing access on the spot?

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 26 points 2 days ago (6 children)

I just want to say thank you to the sane people I see here every day. It helps.

It needs to be destroyed, not toured.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago

Not to fear, they'll get their chance at a free visit of undefined duration. Then, it's our turn, citizens! Got your ticket? If you can read & prefer to think your own thoughts, you've got one on the way. 😶
