"Judge J Harvie Wilkinson III of the court of appeals for the fourth circuit – an eminent conservative Reagan appointee who is revered by the Federalist Society" The fucking Federalist Society is on of the fucking reasons we are where we are. When they are crying foul then we are truely fucked.

Tell this to every ass that talks about Mid-Term elections and raising money for mid-terms. By then it's going to be two late.
Midterms are like 2 years away, by then it will be too late
"You know what I'm starting to think? I'm starting to think that the only kind of people in this country is guys like me,"
"You know guys that work for scraps, do six jobs-who basically bend over and take it. Give it fifteen years tops; this country is finished with democracy. I'm telling you as a caring society, where we do things for each other, we got one thing after another- we are finished here!"
- Tony Lewis
I think it's hilarious how the public seems to be waiting for their representatives to do something while at the same time, the representatives are stoking the fire, waiting for the public to do something.
All the while the orange dude is using immigrants for ICE, FBI and other LEOs to practice on ... so they'll be ready to shut the revolution down immediately.
I do really feel for all the Americans who didn't vote or ask for this, 'cause it's gonna be ugly.
The reps are playing it safe. The best strategy for their own survival is to pacify the public. Agree with their complaints and do nothing about it.
That will work until the Executive decides they aren't needed any longer. A big "Go home, Capitol closed by executive order until the emergency has passed" sign on the Capitol doors. Those that ignore the sign wake up in some third world prison or as the next contestant on 47's newest prime time game show, Who Wants to be Treated as an Insurrectionist Traitor. Their best bet is to organize a fast track impeachment before 47 can stop them, but the longer this all goes on, the faster that whole impeachment thing would need to occur.
It's almost like the strategy of not doing anything, actually doesn't do anything.
All while those in power seek more power. Fighting back as a rep becomes harder, not easier when the rule of law is ignored.
I pretty much agree with the article, but I don't see it explained what he means by "US won’t survive Trump’s next 100 days"?
I think what he really means is that democracy in USA won't survive.
I can't even begin to imagine how frustrating it must be to be a blue state like for instance California, and be forced through this political insanity? Also the personal frustration must be enormous for people who knew Trump would be a massive disaster.
We are cursed to live in interesting times. Could the frustrations for blue states like California become big enough for them to secede? I better go get some more popcorn!
I don't see it explained what he means by "US won’t survive Trump’s next 100 days"?
The Trump administration has made a series of Executive Orders. State judges have deemed several of them unconstitutional and issued an injunction, legally pausing them until SCOTUS can rule them. In response, Trump has complained to SCOTUS that no single "activist judge" should be able to impede him like this. They will hear that case soon, and one of two things will happen:
-
SCOTUS rules in favor of the Executive branch, and judges can no longer block federal behavior, meaning the only way for unconstitutional actions taken by the federal govt to be heard by a court is for the affected individual to file a lawsuit in federal court.
-
SCOTUS rules in favor of the states, BUT trump legitimately believes he is allowed to commit crimes as president, so he'll just continue ignoring everyone.
I think what he really means is that democracy in USA won't survive.
That's the same thing. No democratic republic, no constitution, no USA. Trump might continue using the name, he might even come up with a new constitution and say that it's the same one with a few improvements, but the US as we knew it would be dead and gone.
That’s the same thing.
No.
Did for instance Hungary cease to exist when it became Communist?
Did it cease to exist again when it became democratic?
The answer to both is obviously no.
Same with USA, just because it becomes a totalitarian dictatorship is not the same as not surviving as a country.
For that you have to speculate that something more happens afterwards. Which isn't mentioned in the article at all.
but I don't see it explained what he means by "US won’t survive Trump’s next 100 days"?
Could the frustrations for blue states like California become big enough for them to secede?
Well if the states aren't united anymore, the USA is dead, no?
That was exclusively my speculation, there is no hint of that in the article.
California should consider becoming independent and joining the EU😂
If California leaves the USA and gets reasonable gun control and housing costs under control, I would want to be a citizen of the New California Republic.
We would still be just the California Republic, there has been no break between the Bear Flag revolt and the current government. Reminder the NCR in Fallout 2 and New Vegas is not a pre-war remnant but instead a new world government taking heavy inspiration from the old world
Almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter...
More realistically the blue states should consider the fact that the red states will always be slowing them down and they might need to secede and form their own country and let the red states become a third world country because that's what they clearly want.
Begun, the Balkanization of the US has.
Absolutely and Denmark has also made an offer to buy California, which would have many advantages for Trump. For one he would get rid of one of the most pesky blue states.
Many Californians have actually offered to help financing the purchase!
california could buy itself
Yes, but that wouldn't provide the obvious benefits of being part of Denmark. 😋
Which are almost none since it’s on the other side of the world and has a GDP 10x higher (~4t) than Denmark (~4b).
I do like the cheek in that website though.
Finally, a way to keep the Zonies out!
Leaders can speak all they want means nothing. Action is what counts, and they won't do anything to jeopardize their comfort
At this point, Im surprised we survived the first 100 days.
Any further days are just a bonus at this point
Forget the next 100 days. We've got like...3 more years of this. 3 more years.
And all I've been seeing so far is just people pointing fingers and saying bold things, but doing fuck all about it. Especially the public, who think they're going to be saved by some one-man army or some deity or some karma system when quite frankly, they're all fictitious. Getting off your ass and doing something about it is to much of a chore for them.
Forget the next 3 years, we've got less than 100 days!
The whole point of the 100 days argument is that we're dangerously close to not having 3 more years of this, but rather the rest of our lives of this.
Reich literally points out in the article that at this rate, midterms won't be any relief.
More like 3 years and 8 months! So it's actually closer to 4 years.
It's only just begun!!!
Inshallah
I really don't understand why people are upset about due proces now. The US established over 10 years ago that it's OK to kill US citizens if they're "terrorists". But deportation is crossing the line?
Am I missing something on this subject? Or is it just typical political hypocrisy?
There was endless handwringing about Obama hitting that dude with a drone strike.
But regardless... are you seriously going to pretend that is at all comparable to what is happening right now? A US citizen, in a foreign war zone, fighting for the enemy vs. kidnapping and trafficking US citizens from their homes in the US to a prison in El Salvador. A country they've never been to.
C'mon bro.
Appeals are not dystopian. That's ridiculous.
They are appealing temporary restraining orders, which are not legally appealeable! TROs are extreme methods of relief designed to stop something from occurring that has a huge risk of irreparable harm, and are temporary so that the court can actually take the time to weigh the issue.
Usually a TRO is issued for 2-3 weeks, the court takes that time to come to grips with what's happening, and then can rule with a better understanding. If you could just appeal a TRO, then you could just take the action that causes the irreparable harm faster than any court can effectively rule, which is why they're not supposed to be appealeable.
So yes, appealing a TRO is dystopian and illegal, but who can stop it? The supreme court eventually...
Didn't know that difference thanks. Hopefully something changes soon.
It's almost like the legal system is made to be obscure and obtuse by design. Difficult to know what's going on there as a lay person.
Yes it's nearly a secret society
