John Oliver promoted alternatives to big tech in last night's episode, including Mastodon and Pixelfed

It's brief, around 25:15

His videos are uploaded on PeerTube as well. I donโ€™t know if his team is doing it or a fan. lastweektonight_channel@tube.fede.re

given that the name contains "(unofficial mirror)", I'm willing to take a guess

[โ€“] Lemgen@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

It says its an unofficial mirror

[โ€“] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Is there a Roku client for PeerTube?

[โ€“] peaches@lemm.ee 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Looks like there is one PeerVue as per the following link:

PeerTube Third party applications

Thanks! Iโ€™ll check it out.

This might actually be kind of huge. Doesnโ€™t he have a pretty big outreach?

Oh, so it didnโ€™t do that much then. Oh well, still good exposure!

Its like with normal advertisement. If you heard the name of it before, especially from a trustworthy source, then it instantly becomes more trustworthy to you. When people seriously start looking for alternatives, they will think back or try to find that episode again.

Yeah the question is where does he personally have his social media? X, facebook, instagram by the looks of it?

I don't see him on mastodon

[โ€“] Parptarf@lemm.ee 20 points 10 months ago

Hmm. If people like himself were to start using Mastodon and Pixelfed, there would be a bigger increase of users for sure.

John Oliver's the GOAT, along with Jon Stewart.

[โ€“] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 23 points 10 months ago (4 children)

John Goodman, John Candy, John F. Kennedy, John C. Reilly, John Denver. Trust in the Jo(h)ns..

I would trust him to watch my dogs.

[โ€“] lord_ryvan@ttrpg.network 11 points 10 months ago

I don't know, man, his seems pretty dead.

Don't forget John Green!

[โ€“] jaybone@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Thatโ€™s a lot of John son.

[โ€“] PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world 0 points 10 months ago

Johnson had a big johnson

[โ€“] harmsy@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I'd be careful around anyone whose middle name is John, though. There's this one guy with stupid hair that ruins everything he touches. Heard he's in charge of a whole country now.

[โ€“] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 9 months ago

Jon Stewart and the daily show forged many legends

[โ€“] Blaze@feddit.nl 56 points 10 months ago

That was nice of him

[โ€“] Monstrosity@lemm.ee 23 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Pixelfed is growing fast.

A few months ago, it was like me and six other losers. It's great to see!

[โ€“] letzlo@feddit.nl 1 points 10 months ago (2 children)

What does it do? Is it a direct alternative for something?

[โ€“] faercol@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 10 months ago

It's an alternative to Instagram

[โ€“] Monstrosity@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

Here's my profile to get the gist

The landing page is terrible.

I think discussion forum type apps are just niche by default. Reddit never courted the masses, it was a site for geeks (and now it's being turned into a site for the fedoraรจd clientele exclusively). And despite what Facebook hoped, Threads isn't exactly a household name.

[โ€“] Revan343@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 months ago

Threads

Oh right, that exists

[โ€“] ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Signal? Does it have channels like Telegram?

[โ€“] SkybreakerEngineer@lemmy.world 44 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yes, but a cabinet level government official has to add you

[โ€“] jaybone@lemmy.zip 20 points 10 months ago

So itโ€™s pretty easy to get in.

[โ€“] MITM0@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Now if only he promoted XMPP as well

[โ€“] FweliXOX@lemy.lol 1 points 9 months ago
[โ€“] warmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Fuck BlueSky, they are full of shit.

Signal is centralized in the US.
