I applaud the sentiment, but uhm… I don't think the comparison is helpful. Fighting external enemies is very different from fighting fascism from within. The "the state champions freedom" vs "the state is tyranny" kind of different.

[–] Fusselwurm@feddit.org 56 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Like… our main problem today is not guns and ships.

The main problem is media, i.e. the propaganda system that keeps MAGAts happy to shoot themselves in the foot.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 23 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The Conservative Propaganda Machine.

Before this is over, it will have to dealt with as the National Security Threat it is.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

keeps ~~MAGAts~~ everyone happy to shoot themselves in the foot.

Imagine living through the last 30 years and honestly thinking you weren't voting for your own decimating because you picked the blue fascist team. Obama had all the power he needed to stop the WoT, the Patriot Act, the militarization of police, and the corruption of Wall Street in its tracks, but nope.

Instead he laid down the fascist asphalt so Donald could joyride.

Obama had all the power he needed to stop the WoT, the Patriot Act, the militarization of police, and the corruption of Wall Street in its tracks, but nope.

The ruling stating that presidents have complete immunity from persecution for acts taken in the official capacity as president, in which the judges made it clear that could even include assassinating political rivals, did not pass during Trump's administration.

It passed during Biden's administration. The Supreme Court basically told him "you can assassinate Trump and nothing would happen to you." He didn't even pursue him for persecution.

Democrats are not just useless, they're complicit.

We're not there yet, man, give it another year or so, maybe another Dem admin? lol. They've been playing good cop/bad cop for idk how long and these people keep falling for it! Despite Obama droning his way into a Peace Prize, and imperialist moves made regardless of which color is leading the nation, they still think they can 'vote blue' their way out of it. And at this point in America, voting is just virtue signalling. 🤷

But you are the media in this world. Everybody here is generating media everyday. Traditional media was replaced with Facebook and Twitter and reddit. How many leftist removed themselves from there? Is it any surprise that the whole world seems like it's using right wing talking points anymore. The left fucked themselves and most still don't get what has happened here

[–] Fusselwurm@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"social" media is prone to promoting fear & hate, unless it's heavily moderated. Twitter & Facebook completely fail in that regard. Leftift voices leaving these platforms is a consequence of that, not the cause.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Fuck moderation. Moderation is a big part of how we got here.

They boxed people into sanitized communities. Look at the biggest groups here or on reddit. It's usually only headlines. Very little discussion. No interpretation. Mods removed anyone they felt were 'trolls' it left only homogeneous spaces. No insight. Just people all agreeing with each other saying like 10 phrases over and over again.

Moderators, especially in left-leaning spaces, have turned disagreement into a bannable offense. If you do not perfectly align, you are out. Moderators enforce purity.

I posted a clip recently of an agitator burning a flag at a protest and then running away. It had hundreds of upvotes. A mod deleted it and said it was because they did not like it. That is not moderation. That is controlling what people are allowed to see.

People keep pretending the real fight is in the streets. It is not. If powerful institutions did not believe online spaces mattered, they would not spend billions shaping them. They understand the battleground. For some reason the leftist haven't figured it out.

We need to go back to basics. Moderation should be minimal. Mods should handle illegal or truly extreme content and nothing else. Everything else should be decided by the community. That is why upvotes and downvotes exist. Why was that forgotten

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

There is the third type of fighting as well. I don't know what that is but trump once said "Fight! Fight! Fight!" during a political theatre event a while back. So that's three. /s

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Not to mention that America inspired the Nazis, and after we "beat them", we hired them to run NASA and NATO...

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Better if it shows a Confederate soldier?

We will beat them again. It's just a question of how much suffering until then, and how much we actually root out the ideology.

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't do shit because I wasn't alive then. And clearly they're not gone, because here they are. But you may note that slavery is illegal now. Not enough but not nothing. If you want to doom keep it to yourself.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Your for-profit prison system belies that particular claim.

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What are you trying to accomplish here? Is your message to any Americans of conscience "no, you can't beat fascists"? Don't be a dick and don't be defeatist

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca -1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

The message is: "try harder this time and don't forget to follow through".

Edit: oh and I'd like to add "good luck". No sarcasm.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Reconstruction was never truly complete and allowed for a full range of "compromises". The attitude and feelings remained the same.

Quite sad that 175 years later and the arguments have changed very little.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

To give some context to how little it's changed even in rhetoric. Confederate leaders were fear mongering about socialism.

[–] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (3 children)

They forfeited the right to be called my countrymen when they spat on the founding principles of the nation. They are foreign to the American ideal.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They are foreign to the American ideal.

What ideal would that be? Manifest Destiny, the genocidal land theft from indigenous people followed by enslaving Africans to build the nation?

This is America, and underneath the rhetoric and the eagles, always has been America. You've just been brainwashed into believing otherwise.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 21 hours ago

And America is the extension of Britain and you know how they are!

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but they don't have an entire world of countries using guns and bombs to tell them that.

Fighting fascism is a whole lot easier when it decides to start a world War, every other instance they just continue on within their own borders.

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

We're trying to avoid the whole world war part but it'll come if these assholes continue

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately if a world war comes it will likely be to bomb civilians while the megacorps make deals with all parties to stay clear of their production lines...

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Then we blow up the production lines with fireworks if need be.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

if the thugs & bombs don't get to us first...

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

History will be written by the Eric and Donald jrs of the world. 🤢

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bold of you to assume they can write.

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

They'll do it the same way trump "wrote" a book

The founding principles of the nation are might makes right and don't whine, there's no truth nor justice in the world, and the US has behaved exactly that way from their Anglo-Saxon conception by crusading into America annihilating the locals, then enjoying slavery, then destabilising nations around the world post WW2 power reshuffle, pillaging, murdering and raping their way across the land for geopolitical and financial advantages. In the little time it's been a thing, it's accumulated sins for thousands of years. Get real, man, if you know any moral, righteous, prosocial and selfless Americans (maybe yourself included!) they are so despite their culture, not because of it.

[–] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Are you fedposting?

[–] TipsyMcGee@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

That depends on what you think the comparison is and from what vantage point. If the comparison is current grass roots opposition to the government to the US and Allies fight against Hitler, then sure. The comparison is better made with the rest of the world's multi decade effort to defeat the nazis and their allies.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 3 points 2 days ago

Maybe the weapon is being held by a European liberator

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah it’s wishful reduction to think it’s as simple as this.
