"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"
A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.
AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
Rules:

- This isn't a place to talk about the cons and (supposed) pros of AI for different use cases. This is /c/fuck_ai .
- Especially no AI advocacy.
- No AI-generated content. If you want to post examples of AI failing hillariously, there are other communities for that like !ArtificialIgnorance@lemmy.ca .
- Venting is part of the purpose of this community, but don't aim frustration or accusations at other users.

You can help the mod team by making your reports detailed.
Effective reports:
- "The third image is a well-known anti-semitic trope"
- "Claiming that 'agentic AI' can outperform humans at all jobs is misinformation"
Less effective reports:
- "Breaks rules"
- "Misinformation"

Paywall so I can't actually read the whole article but from the abstract:
"We've drawn an arbitrary line around 'consciousness' and have decided what's on either side" isn't exactly the concrete dismissal they seem to think it is.
Not arbitrary: consciousness is a defined word with historical meaning. "Consciousness comes from the Latin word conscious, which means "knowing with" or "having joint knowledge." The term evolved in English during the 17th century, with its modern meaning relating to awareness of one's own mind first appearing in the late 1600s."
You have arbitrarily redefined consciousness, implicitly by context to include any response to the environment. What good is epistemology if a plant's hormonal action implies self awareness?
Edit: Imagine, if you will, that the stream of consciousness using language to tie a plant's hormonal action to self awareness, e.g., words like "plants know when" is just as much of a cognitive and emotional hallucination as the most sublime sounding gibberish produced by an LLM.
