"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Calling someone a lolcow is not a wrong thing per se.

[–] RVGamer06@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Considering the circumstances in which the term was originally coined, i don't think so.

Considering the circumstances in which the term was originally coined

The Original lolcow is Chris Chan, who was baited dozens of times by trolls into doing ridiculous things on camera at 4chan in the /cow/ board.
Thus, the term lolcow.

Which means that people who find baiting "lolcows" funny are 4chan types by default. Therefore, unless the context tells me otherwise, just uttering the term is a ginormous red flag for me.

That also casts a doubt in your claim of the term coinage.

Which means that people who find baiting "lolcows" funny are 4chan types by default.

How? What is your line of reasoning here?

Therefore, unless the context tells me otherwise

Now you suddenly care not only about the origin of the term, but about context also?

Bud, just because it sometimes happens to bad people, doesn't mean it is not wrong to reproduce cultural norms that target vulnerable groups of people. "Lolcow" was used to refer to autistic people online pretty much exclusively, and the cruel culture behind it has literally resulted in multiple suicides of completely innocent if unpalletable people. This commenter went on to say actual fascist shit to defend this, and that isn't a coincidence.

You can tell the demos of this site based on shit like this. Yeah, I'm sure a bunch of you were edgy teen boys and you want to pretend that was okay (or even natural) because you were kids and "didnt know better," but subscribing to bigotry as an adult clearly shows that you don't understand why it was wrong, just that it was wrong.

Even if just colloquially.
