"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

What the fuck did people think "the information economy" in "the information age" was going look like??? Where the fuck do people think "the cloud" is???

I wouldn't expect much thinking

AI companies really shot themselves in the foot with their scare marketing and then talking about covering the planet in datacentres - they’re the physical manifestation of AI, so no wonder they’re being opposed. And then when they do build them, they’re steamrollered past environmental restrictions and make front page news for their noise and pollution.

Nobody likes the cloud. It is and always was obviously a scheme to control all of your data, and eventually steal all of its value.

This has mostly nothing to do with the cloud though. There is plenty of capacity from existing data centres for cloud computing. The US already has over 3000 data centers. The planned 4000 (!) extra data centers are all for the AI bubble.

Most of those 4000 will luckily never be build, because that is part of the scam. However the existing ones are still a huge problem for carbon emission and climate change.

These data centers are for GenAI only. A warehouse full of tens of thousands of NVidia GPUs is completely unnecessary for anything but LLM bullshit and blockchain bullshit. The data centers that run actually useful things like S3 or your favorite MMORPG's servers don't consume multiple gigawatts of power and raise the temperature in the surrounding area by 4 degrees Fahrenheit.
