A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Stupid Question: Why is the heat not used to generate power through heat exchanging devices and turbines? Or at least for heating the water of nearby town by long distance heating? Wouldnt that be a pretty obvious synergy?

Two of the big reasons:

  1. The efficiency of power generation from heat increases with a larger temperature difference.

  2. Turbines operate via high pressure steam, not just hot water.

So ya there's a lot of heat given off but it's not "high quality" heat because it isn't hot enough. And if you ran the data center hotter it would destroy the gpus.
