I've only ever had one cat and she is definitely a Smart cat and I would argue a Good one.
It's been pretty easy training her to stay off electronics/furniture, most morning wellness checks happen after the alarm and even takes medicine like a champ.
I don't have any real sort of baseline but I feel my cat understands a lot of the intent behind my words and often acts accordingly, more than most animals and many small children with whom I've worked.
He speaks some English but he cannot speak it good like we do.
Is there a physical community notice board somewhere? Failing that, a local library? (The librarians would probably know where to find some sort of community notice board.) Those things often have group activities posted.
Unsure how common it is in smaller towns but in my city moat bars have event nights whether they're trivia, karaoke etc. Or, sounds weird but even going, sitting at the bar and watching a game has, in my experience, often led to conversation.

Last time I was at the passport office they literally had someone pointing folks to 1 of 2 lines, instead of, y'know, a sign. (And yes, there was someone else there who was clearly there to help as needed, which ended up with them just slowly pacing the room.)
Or, if we move to more remote work (which many departments now say they'll do to cut costs) you don't need as many people in the office planning departments etc.

I was fine paying for Amazon to make the highest quality stuff that I wanted to see, like the Expanse, Invincible, the fucking Boys etc as I do believe I can't bemoan the lack of quality programming if I'm not helping foster it.
