Or even just order through the restaurant's website or over the phone instead of using a middleman. Especially smaller places sometimes have better offers if you do it that way.
This is hell in the UK because no one on the other line speaks English.
I don't order food but whenever I go in I'm thankful for automated self-checkouts because I pick my order on a touchscreen in seconds instead of shouting it at some poor busy deaf wageslave over noise of ovens and sirens blasting.
I agree it's so much nicer to go out and eat at restaurants.
Or if you can get take out, or check and see if the restaraujt itself has delivery. Idk about elsewhere, but in the states shit like uber eats and DoorDash tend to screw over the restraint too.

The mark-up is nuts too! Not only are you paying service fees etc., the cost of the items on the menu is also higher when you order through these kind of apps vs. the vendors own website or in-store.

Elitist bullshit, sometimes it happens that people actually work long hours in difficult jobs and would like a little treat without having the time to actually go out. So yes, these services existing are a good thing. It's not a laziness issue, it's a privilege issue.

There are people out there who order their food multiple times a week and itโs a problem in my book.
Sometimes I want a takeaway when my kids are already in bed, and I think it's generally frowned upon to leave them in the house on their own while I amble down the street to get a chicken balti.
Most of the time, restaurants do the delivery themselves and charge a couple of quid for the privilege. I'm fine with this arrangement.
Most (if not all) of those treat their employees like shit, it's gig economy and exploitation. If you don't rely on services like these, it's best not to use them at all, no matter where they are based.
Depends, foodora workers in Norway have collective bargaining rights and are unionized. Th y seem to be pretty happy now.
Lieferando workers in Austria are unionised too, did not stop rhe company from announcing laying off approx. 900 people this week. Context: they're firing all the real employees and are only hiring "self-employed" (lol) people from now on.
Yep. Lieferando for instance takes an 18% cut in some cases.
I avoid delivery generally. But if there's no other option, I hit up Lieferando and pick a service by availability and menu options. Then I go to their website or Google Maps to find their phone number which takes like 20 seconds, order directly, and give a cash tip.
This also ensures the driver is an employee.

Wolt is Finnish but is was acquired by the American comlany Door Dash in 2022.
And has since increased their fees every few months while also increasing minimum order sizes. They're now enshittifying.
Lieferando is a vicious grasshopper. Whenever you can, you should order directly from the restaurants. But be careful, Lieferando even registers domains to give the impression that it is the restaurant's real website. This can be seen in the footer / imprint.
Yeah, Lieferando has almost monopolised takeout in Germany.
I usually use Restablo for that reason, it might not be any better, heck they don't even have an app anymore, but at least I am giving money to a smaller company.
You can also order directly from many restaurants. Takes just seconds to find their phone number, and you sometimes get a free drink in return.
Better yet, you can find some that are local cooperatives in some cities.

the elitism in other comments is ridiculous, there is a market for this type of delivery services also because some people do not have the time to go to a restaurant, or to cook. Sure, you could lookup the restaurant online, hope that they have a website (they often don't, only a Facebook or Instagram page), then hope that they do deliveries (which is a whole service that they have to add on top of their usual charges)
Again and again I come here to realize: I'm too poor to learn from or contribute to your discussions.

What about deliveroo? I've been using that instead of Ubereats since about 2019 when Uber really enshittified until about 2020 when I generally cut down on food delivery.
They're a less good company than Just Eat in terms of driver exploitation, but still infinitely better than Uber Eats on every metric.
