Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

And it sounds strange, doesn’t it? Department of Education, we’re going to eliminate it, and everybody knows it’s right, and the Democrats know it’s right

It does sound strange to an educated person, but in a generation or so the populace wouldn't be educated enough to know any better.

And that is just republicans admitting that only stupid people vote for them; not that elections will ever take place again anyways.

but in a generation or so the populace wouldn’t be educated enough to know any better.

a generation??? the populace ALREADY doesn't know any better... like... they voted for him (or were indifferent enough to not show up at the polls, which is almost the same thing)

[–] CitricBase@lemmy.world 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yup. This goes way deeper than Trump, conservative undermining of education has been in the works for decades, since Reagan. Adam Conover explains it well in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlAb_8bDHjE

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

its not only on REP sides, while better in blue areas, it still pretty underfunded and its almost never addressed at the state level either. all they are doing in most case is rasing property taxes to fund it. makes them an easy target for military(im thinking its the reason why they dont want fully fund education, tutoring(alot of hs students would benefit from tutoring services.), low wage workers, and PRIson-pipe line is the next best thing.

[–] Plurrbear@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That’s the part that made me the most upset is… YOU ALWAYS VOTE! Regardless of party affiliation! People in other countries do NOT have the PRIVILEGE that our nation FOUGHT to protect and at the VERY FUCKING LEAST you can do is… get off your lazy asses and VOTE!

I think it’s embarrassing that “undecided” is even an option, it’s a fucking choice; do your damn research, read many articles, don’t fall prey to the US gaslighting propaganda on all MAJOR news channels, follow both candidates, and if at that point; you still have reached the, “Owen Wilson Idiocracy Affect” flip a fucking coin… but for the love of god vote!

OMISSION of voting resulted in this travesty… no excuses you have the same internet we all have, yet you CHOOSE this and now we all have to suffer, just fucking lovely.

Honestly, since we fought for our rights to vote and gained them from the British all we have done is eventually bring us right back to that same fate and demise! Germany is looking a hell of a lot better than the US in recent years, we can’t even elect a woman president! 🤦🏽‍♀️ and we don’t even crack the top ten lists in anything… but yes, gut education, that will make us great again?!

New MAGA slogan: Make America God Awful

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

George Washington et al “fought to protect” pretty early on. A hundred years before France was bringing out the guillotines. So in that sense, the US has the antiquated system, which never really adapted.

[–] Plurrbear@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Um… what?

Where did I single out France or guillotines? And/or mention anything that you are stating other than Washington fighting for our rights as its own country and not under a monarchy?

You do know that France actually HELPED us, to gain our own independence, right? I am just honestly confused on your comment. (Not mean, just wanting to know).

[–] Noite_Etion@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed, but if it's that bad now wait until the next generation grows up without an education; you won't even need an electoral college or gerrymandering to swing votes.

Again, not like a vote will ever take place in the US anymore. Kings don't need elections to stay in power.

[–] 9488fcea02a9@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 year ago

I dont think there was a department of education in the 1700s or 1800s and people seemed to know how to overthrow their kings.

I'm an optimist

you have russia more or less. even an college educated person falls into right wing sphere of influence, especially if they consume right wing grifters/influencers, + and are still religious to a degree. ive seen a poc youutber convince his viewers how degee is totally uselsess, and made some other rant. but old fans knowing the history of the channel (when he was more humble), he just projecting his failures of his own education, He had a PSYCH degree and became bitter how he never could find a job from it. psych needs grad school+ clinical experiences. ive seen this in person people choose psych because its an Easy degree to finish with a "sciency sounding degree" only to complain about it after graduation. the other asian channel co-owner is even dumber than he is, and he allegedly couldve applied to medical school,(though i think he was exaggerating the truth.) because he shocked everyone in the video and comments because he couldnt tell the difference between a womans coochie and her pee hole.

A department created and funded by congress cannot be eliminated without the approval of congress.

[–] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 49 points 1 year ago

That was in the before time when the law mattered

[–] iAmTheTot@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 year ago (2 children)

They're trying to get around it by saying this does not actually shut down the DoE. All this executive order does is instruct Linda to, like, wind down operations, basically everything except collecting loans, surprise surprise. That way they can say they haven't closed the department and therefore it's not illegal. This is no doubt to buy time hoping that midterms give them a bigger majority to actually close it with Congress.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

ms Linda mchamon was also in trumps first cabinet too, she was head of the SBA.

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 year ago

Legally, maybe. But who's going to stop him? Both houses of congress are controlled by Repugnicans.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

hes going to illegally fire them, or prevent them from doing thier job, its a done deal anyways.

[–] palmtrees2309@lemm.ee 40 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Idiocracy aged like fine wine

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 33 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Idiocracy pulled its punches.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

I keep saying this. Mike judge gave us too much credit

[–] iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, honestly, Not Sure probably would've been vaporized in the nuclear apocalypse shortly after being frozen. Not as great of a story, though.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I had to read your comment a few times before I realized Not Sure meant Luke Wilson.

[–] xpinchx@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Anyone seen it lately? I can't decide if I'd think it's funny or just get depressed.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 1 points 1 year ago

Watched it a couple of months ago. Still funny and divorced enough from what is going on that it doesn't give PTSD.

[–] gex@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

President Camacho still had a secretary of education

[–] charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That movie taught me so much about electrolytes

[–] RizzoTheSmall@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

They're what plants crave!

[–] ShadowRam@fedia.io 32 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Good idea Donny...

Make your nation dumber... You'll really compete on the global market that way!

[–] drzoidberg@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's the only way Republicans can stay in power. The dumber the nation, the more likely they vote republican.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

or to make them ignorant to whatever republicans do behind the scenes with no pushback. they already have most rural areas in thier backpocket, they have moved onto middle and upper middle class "disenfranchised people"

[–] oxjox@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 year ago

While this certainly doesn’t help our already failing primary education system, the department of education mostly works with grants and loans and continued education (GED), ensuring a safe learning environment, aiding those with disabilities, etc. You know, the bare minimum governments should be doing.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 1 year ago (2 children)

The fact that they staged this with Trump, surrounded by children in school outfits and desks... Bruh.

[–] oyo@lemm.ee 14 points 1 year ago

At least they made sure a wide variety of races, ethnicities, and religions were represented. Isn't there an acronym for that?

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 year ago

That's just the classroom he works in daily, practicing his signature and showing it to the teacher (pictured)

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

They were practicing his signature. It’s a new version of auto pen, with child labor

[–] randompasta@lemmy.today 23 points 1 year ago

Asshole. Fucking dickwad asshole.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

To be fair his supporters weren't using the education dept anyway

[–] SeaJ@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

If it is anything like the draft of the EO, it doesn't actually do anything.
