"In vain" itself is a weird expression, meaning mostly "to no effect" [0]. So dont invoke God's judgement unless you're 100% sure, but its not really clear whether he'll damn you if you're not.
It's basically like saying "I swear to God" and either lying, or using like "I swear to God bro!" which cheapens it.
I think there's plenty of interpretations of this (as always)

Swear words are special words, that you shouldn't use just any fucking time you feel like it.
My father used to say that using swear words just shows that you lack a decent vocabulary. I have lived by that ever fucking since.
Folks that can't go but a few minutes w/o using a swear in their sentences have a small vocabulary, as such they sound moronic when speaking.
