[off topic] When the Bible says 'don't take the Lord's name in vain' it doesn't mean that you are damned for cursing. It means that you shouldn't lie under oath.

"In vain" itself is a weird expression, meaning mostly "to no effect" [0]. So dont invoke God's judgement unless you're 100% sure, but its not really clear whether he'll damn you if you're not.

It's basically like saying "I swear to God" and either lying, or using like "I swear to God bro!" which cheapens it.

I think there's plenty of interpretations of this (as always)

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 7 points 11 months ago (3 children)

What?? You mean a 5,000 year old book that's been translated and retranslated eighteen times is 'open to interpretation?'

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 6 points 11 months ago

Any interpretation is fine, as long as it's my interpretation, of course.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

and only my version is correct, obviously. /s

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Lol. You beat me to it. But lucky for both of us, our beliefs are completely identical.

[–] glitchdx@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago (1 children)

ok, now how do I add an image, wait, i think I figured it out

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 3 points 11 months ago

Actually made me laugh out loud. Thanks.

[–] Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Your comment just gave a vibe of that being the way to interpret it

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 11 months ago

Most religion interprets that commandment as "don't say God unless you're actually praying to him."

"Damn" is fine. "God damn" is taking the Lord's name in vain.

Jesus fucking Christ. This is a relief to hear.

Doesn't it mean that you are forbidden from saying God's name for no reason? (YWH)

[–] Demonmariner@lemmy.world 22 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Swear words are special words, that you shouldn't use just any fucking time you feel like it.

[–] dQw4w9WgXcQ@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

My father used to say that using swear words just shows that you lack a decent vocabulary. I have lived by that ever fucking since.

Folks that can't go but a few minutes w/o using a swear in their sentences have a small vocabulary, as such they sound moronic when speaking.

What im fuckin sayin is, you got a god damn point

[–] Demonmariner@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Ya, ain't that shit the truth?

Is 'damn' a swear word or is it just the child being cute?

[–] ramble81@lemm.ee 8 points 11 months ago

Some older people consider it to be.

[–] Nelots@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago

Some people consider it to be a lighter swear word. Hence the mother not being upset about it.

Spicy sentence enhancers

This gives me Judith from TWD vibes.
