Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Hmm in only there was a culture of getting organised as an union.

Maybe the people in the US will find some strength of conviction in this mess

[–] Hotspur@lemmy.ml 33 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Many positions in federal service are banned from joining unions—most of the higher scale / subject matter expert and “white color” roles.

These were doctors and epidemiologists, and were also in a special 2 year program, so they wouldn’t have had the standard protections of competitive service, and might also have been excluded from union membership.

Worth noting that aside from some lawsuit exposure, fed unions are not allowed, by law, to strike. (Reagan terminated thousands of air traffic controllers when they struck and replaced them with scab labor as an example) And the current admin doesn’t seem to scared of laws or lawsuits at the moment. (Hopefully they’re wrong in that confidence, but who knows)

I would join a union in a heartbeat, but my position is barred from it.

[–] dugmeup@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That is ridiculous isn't it? It's saying people can't join a private club.

[–] Hotspur@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 year ago

Yep, for sure. The tradeoff was supposed to be the higher protections that come with competitive service positions, but those protections are being ignored or illegally removed week by week, so yeah at this point anyone should be allowed to join the union.

But to be honest? Its looking more and more like the admin is going to break binding union agreements as well so maybe it’s all just fucked.

The shit we're going through to today is what happens when striking workers don't break the scabs' kneecaps, "legal" or not.

No, voters seem to approve of all this so far. Polls are positive. Swing voter focus groups like the gutting and are not concerned.

TBH the US government needed to be turned on its head, and that positive fantasy is being sold to the public as it’s reorganized to protect billionaires.

So… TBH, unless there’s some kind of social media revolution overnight, I would probably write us off :(

[–] twistypencil@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Social media is why nobody is doing shit. Everyone is quote dunking and liking posts as if it does shit.

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Exactly, we need to drop it and organize like people used to, put flyers over the city. The social media only gives you illusion that you have a platform, in reality they still control who sees your message (if anyone).

[–] adespoton@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Who would read the flyers? Everyone is buried in their phones.

A big part of the way people "used to" organize relied on physical infrastructure and institutions that often no longer exist: walkable "third places," fraternal organizations/social clubs (outside of college), etc.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago

they aren't swing voters anymore, they've been swindled and lied to and they ate it right up. might as well sign 'em up for a redcap of the month club membership.

Canada needs to close our border to the USA. At this point I'm all for the tarrifs if it means our country completly detaches itself from that sinking ship

[–] skuzz@discuss.tchncs.de 26 points 1 year ago (2 children)

You really should cut us off hard. Save yourselves, we'll take care of this problem internally, in the meanwhile, once enough people wake up.

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 year ago

If any of you (sane) states manage to break away from the union, we'll happily accept you into ours :)

[–] dellish@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Once enough people ~~wake up~~ die. FTFY

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Canada can't afford to, no? Too much usa food in their stores

[–] NotSteve_@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I would have thought so too but I've been avoiding buying anything American recently and it's a lot easier than I expected. Our stores would definitely look a lot emptier for a while but I think it's worth it in the long run

That's great! I'm pleasantly surprised

[–] MellowYellow13@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Barely anything from the US

So I knew about RFK's anti vaccine / raw milk stance, I didn't know this part though

Kennedy has also expressed skepticism about widely accepted infectious disease science, questioning whether germs cause disease and whether HIV causes AIDS.

[–] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 23 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

And maybe we could just feed him a nice plate of Salmonella if he thinks it's fine.

[–] Goodmorningsunshine@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes, please. Sprinkle it with some syph and bird flu because why the fuck not?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Turns out bird flu cures syph

(They used malaria to cure it before)

[–] Kevnyon@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

If he has any doubts about HIV causing AIDS, he should test it on himself then. I mean if he says it doesn't do it, why not?

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Scratch a denialist of one type, and you soon find they contain multitudes of denialist bullshit. That's been my experience, anyway.

Ask him about the Holocaust, evolution, and the moon landing, I say...seems he is already known as a vaccine denialist, an HIV denialist and a germ theory denialist.

[–] gwilikers@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 year ago

Yeah he's also cast aspersions on the Polio vaccine. When that vaccine was first announced on the news, people on NY were out in the streets celebrating. Work basically stopped for the day. Practically everyone knew someone who had died of Polio.

It was one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of the modern era. But RFK thinks he knows better.

[–] jonne@infosec.pub 29 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I should probably bet some money on both RFK and Trump contracting bird flu this year.

[–] P00ptart@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Probably from some dead bald eagle that rfk found on his way to work.

That would be to nice for this timeline. More likely that half the country will get it in the next 5 years and tens of thousands of babies and pregnant women will die. That fits more with what the writers seem to like.

[–] PupCuir@feddit.online 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was in Walgreens tonight after work and purchased some face masks in light of the degradation of the DHHS.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They’re gonna be illegal to wear in public anyway, though.

[–] PupCuir@feddit.online 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'll start actively sneezing in people's faces to prove a point.

This is how the violence starts…

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you can cover it up with the Ministry of Truth, there is no problem, right?

Right?

[–] DrunkEngineer@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can't die of ebola if it wasn't tracked by the CDC. (Taps Forehead...)

[–] LMurch@thelemmy.club 6 points 1 year ago

"Cause of death? Natural causes, I guess. Sometimes healthy 27 year olds just die."

[–] Mushroomm@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Because his solution for something getting reported on more and more is to write less reports

It's like when a video game has a character with a shitty pickrate cause their kit is no fun and they make an event and tie a bunch of content to them instead of making them fun. Later they're like look! You liked so and so all along! Oblivious to the fact they fudged their own damn numbers

[–] Serpent@feddit.uk 4 points 1 year ago

Your analogy works. Very niche, but it works.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmings.world 14 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I really don't understand the billionaires. From a purely pragmatic standpoint, having an intact government is useful. People not going hungry or stressing the medical system, gives a regime credibility. Without that shield of satisfaction, the rulers of a government are doomed to die at the hands of their subjects.

What is there to gain from all of this?

[–] ubergeek@lemmy.today 7 points 1 year ago

Privatization.

How is there still no travel ban into the EU for US citizens?

[–] Tarquinn2049@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Finally, he's doing something to lower the price of eggs. The long national nightmare is over. Now we can just eat flu eggs for cheap. Problem solved, permanently for some people.

[–] GoofSchmoofer@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Are there independent websites that doctors can log there data, ones not attached in anyway to the federal or state government?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

You’re on one

[–] Welt@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 year ago

Veterinary organisations would keep records and may add to them with trusted data sources, but they're likely primarily government funded.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

The beginning of the US brain drain.
