God I wish the worst thing this timeline had was Gen Z cringe, sounds like heaven.

[–] Glitch@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I had a mentor tell me, "wish in one hand, shit in the other. Which one fills up first?". Not 100% sure what they meant, but it sounds provocative

[–] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 25 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Shitting is more productive than wishing.

[–] Dkarma@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Aka stop wishing and go do things

[–] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 10 months ago

Stop wishing and go shit.

[–] JayDee@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 10 months ago

It's easier to understand if you say "wish into one hand, shit into the other. See which fills up first"

I feel so fucking old, spending all that time and energy, trying to translate the first half.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

And a happy unc to you too.

We're going to need Linguistic Archeologists pretty soon.

[–] noodlejetski@lemm.ee 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Urban Dictionary and Knowyourmeme exist.

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

I feel like knowurmeme doesn't give me the same quality of value it once did

[–] bestagon@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Those already exist

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 27 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It strikes me that this might be exactly why Rome prevailed.

"Commander, we are poised to break the Roman line! Our time is now! Give the order and their forces will be crushed!"

"Bruh I have like zero bars right now what the fuck"

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 14 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I think it's more that the Carthaginian army was unstoppable in the field but didn't have the necessary siege equipment or technical knowledge to take Rome before allied reinforcements arrived but sure why not, Hannibal didn't finish the job because he had no bars.

[–] Gustephan@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

So you're saying Hannibal didn't finish the job because he had no (cross)bars?

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

So if I had a time machine you're saying it might be worth it to learn some ancient languages and take a book on basic siege engines back with me?

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

Alright, that was a wild ride. It turns out the dude thought his elephants were enough, but they just weren't. Barely made it out of there intact.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 26 points 10 months ago (3 children)

What on earth does demure mean apart from its usual meaning?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 30 points 10 months ago

It was a meme to call everything "demure" for a while, stemming from a viral video.

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/very-demure-very-mindful

[–] htrayl@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

In this case, mostly being non-imposing in an "elegant" manner

[–] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 5 points 10 months ago

The same as its initial meaning, but lacking the "submission" context. It's a mindful attempt to be kind and facilitating to other people.

[–] Vladkar@lemmy.world 23 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I long to be out there, with my brothers, waging war against the Empire

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

Those eyes have seen some pixels

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The Fall of Civilizations podcast had a wonderful episode about Carthage that I found very sad and beautiful.

[–] db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

To be fair "sad and beautiful" is the standard for the Fall of Civilizations podcast

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I found the story of Carthage to be particularly interesting because they fell because Rome was so petty that they couldn't allow them to exist. Cato was a dick.

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 7 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Cato was a dick.

Julius Caesar would like to award you a consulship.

WE NEED TO GO BACK! WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ELEPHANTS!!!

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 13 points 10 months ago (1 children)

He should be in the Alps already if he’s serious about this.

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

I hope he doesn't find a stranger there...

[–] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 10 points 10 months ago

Read Philip K Dick. He's got books about that.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago (1 children)

oh no kids use words I don't understand what a hellscape

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

Gyatt rizz, fam!

(I do not know what this means)

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 7 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Ok but

I watched that Hawk Tuah thing and I'll admit I laughed pretty good.

I don't know why it became a meme though

[–] sigmaklimgrindset@sopuli.xyz 12 points 10 months ago

Hawk Tuah was fascinating in observing the generational divide in meme cultures.

Boomers found it crass, GenX/Xilleniala mostly found it funny at face value, and Zillenials/GenZ made hawk tuak jokes steeped in 5 layers of irony because they found it "cringe".

It was Minions 2.0.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 2 points 10 months ago

I don’t know why it became a meme though

Cute girl talking about riding dick in a humorous way.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

We need to erase Christopher Columbus

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Siiiiiiiiiiiiiick

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Apparently it didn't work.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Or maybe it did and we were saved from a worse path.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 8 points 10 months ago (2 children)

I'm definitely not mentally prepared to find out what the timeline worse than this one is like.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm sure that timeline was just as boring and dumb, except that the soviet officer that stopped the nuke being fired during the cuban missile crisis was in the other room, and the world ended in 1962.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hmm, is that really worse? Sounds like we were put out of our misery.

[–] Zink@programming.dev 2 points 10 months ago

I was considering a line at the end about how it may have been a more merciful timeline for many, sadlol.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

It turns out Carthage is the never ending empire that rips open the chaos realms and brings about Warhammer 40k. Romulus and Remus were actually time travelers sent back to save the universe.
