spoilerCollege Board issues aside, I have fond memories of TI-BASIC, writing in it a 3D graphing engine and a stock market analyzer. With enough patience, I could make anything ... but friends. (Although with my chatterbot experiments, I certainly tried.)

Computer Shopper was the shit back in the day. Imagine Newegg's listings of computer hardware bound up every month into a catalog.

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

I'd still like that to be available now so when I take shits in a scif I have something to read.

[–] NoForwardslashS@sopuli.xyz 103 points 1 year ago (1 children)

There are no instruments more Texan.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You’d think they would make banjos.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Benjaben@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I mean, a banjo could show up in country music of any kind, but it feels quite Appalachian to me. Though after looking apparently the top half of Alabama counts, anyway, so TIL!

[–] Huckledebuck@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Georgia answering the banjo call.

[–] ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Apparently those hands belong to a real banjo player hidden behind the actor.

[–] Huckledebuck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Wow, I didn't know that. Mike Addis is the name of the hands.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah banjos are more folk and bluegrass than country.

They are a company that makes thinky-sand.

First they realized that if they forced everyone to use their thinky sand at school, they could charge a massively inflated price.

Then they realized that if they made the thinky-sand go boom, they could charge whatever they wanted.

[–] huquad@lemmy.ml 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Teaching sand to think was a mistake.

Found Butler's lemmy account!

[–] Gork@lemm.ee 50 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is like General Mills, the cereal company, making submersibles like DSV Alvin.

If you eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch while exploring the sea bed in the Alvin, you're still using the same company for both lol

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Well they got their mills and they got their generals obviously

[–] SS2k_2003@lemmy.world 39 points 1 year ago

tbf they are "TEXAS" instruments, this is very texas of them.

[–] sp3tr4l@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 year ago (3 children)

If you think TI's set of manufactured products is insane, look at a Japanese Keiretsu like DKB or South Korean Chaebol, like Daewoo.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The joke is exactly that Japanese and SK company make everything, differently from the US ones.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 23 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hitachi, man. Do you need an air conditioner? A hydrolic excavator? A pussy diddler? A 120mm self propelled mortar? If all of the above, they're the company for you.

[–] jawa21@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 1 year ago

Don't forget nuclear power.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 11 points 1 year ago

I don't know that Yamaha makes weapons but they make everything, so probably.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 1 year ago

What's a cruise missile if not an advanced calculator with an engine, some fins, some sensors and some servos.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You know you won capitalism when you start manufacturing weapons. Take notes people.

[–] rustyfish@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago (4 children)

If you never sat around in class playing Pokémon on your TI-84 Plus after you finished your math exam earlier than the rest, you have no idea what true power feels like.

[–] Hathaway@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Wtf Pokémon? I thought I was hot shit with brick break and a couple other minor apps if I remember

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Dramatic exaggeration I assume. But there was a Super Mario clone (at least on my TI Voyage 200).

[–] rustyfish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Nope. It was a „fully functioning“ version of Pokémon. Not an emulated one, super simplistic and it ran like ass, obviously something tinkered together by a fan, but still a version of it. The TI-84 Plus CE even had the GB Color versions on them fully emulated.

Sadly the TI-84 Plus CE only became the standard right after we graduated.

[–] CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Woah nice, I wouldn't have done much calculating anymore xD

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And here I only had connect 4 and junk programmed into my Casio

[–] Hathaway@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 year ago

Ah. That was one of my other apps for sure!

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Back in the day we would type 58008 on our calculator and turn it upside down to satisfy our porn needs...

[–] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I wasn't ti-84 plus rich. But I was palm pilot tungsten E rich, and played Pokemon and drug wars during class.

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I had a game I think was called "Gangsta" or something which was a text-based game where you sold drugs and had sex with hookers or something

[–] hexadence@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good ol' "aerospace and defense" industry. The backbone of every healthy society.

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The largest teat in the whole country.

[–] N00b22@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Calculators? Did you mean "machines that can run DOOM"

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Drug Wars, 100%. Taught me everything I needed to know about quaaludes.

[–] collapse_already@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

TI sold their defense segment business to Raytheon in the late 90s. I don't think they make missiles anymore.

[–] Kalcifer@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

As the defense industry consolidated, TI sold its defense business to the Raytheon Company in 1997 for $2.95 billion. […] ^[1]^

This goes all the way back to ancient Roman times (and earlier).

Roman Engineers: I guess we making bridges now.

Also Roman Engineers: What the fuck! Onagers? Scorpions? Siege towers?!

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Texas Instruments of mass destruction.

[–] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's called Texas Instruments.... This was inevitable.

[–] TeamAssimilation@infosec.pub 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Texas Instruments (of murder)

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

To their credit, TI will stop making calculators when the Earth becomes uninhabitable.
