Ugh, I try not to be this guy but 7/10 of those movies are remakes/sequels and of the remaining 3 one is the 14th iteration of a character, one is a video game adaptation, and the other is a superhero movie (I assume it ties into the MCU but I can't be fucked to care). I understand you typically get hyped for things you can expect but this list sucks

[–] unknowing8343@discuss.tchncs.de 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Let's be honest, this is a "most anticipated" list. It's expected that people will be anticipating continuations/alterations of stories they know and love.

It's very hard to anticipate a Keanu Reeves movie about a drunk painter with an underground director.

[–] adam_y@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Absolutely spot on.

You can't anticipate what you already know.

Also, if you haven't pitched that Keanu movie, you need an agent. I'm in.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

Not a single original idea.

[–] Kelly@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, its the "most anticipated" list so it really just measuring brand recognition.

[–] Lemmy_2019@lemmy.one 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The top ten box office movies for 2024 had 8 sequels, a live action Disney remake, and the first part of an adaptation of a Broadway musical based on a book which was a prequel to another remade movie based on a book.

I reckon the 2025 list reflects the state of the industry quite well.

With you on that. At first I thought the list was some kind of satire...

[–] SpiceDealer@lemmy.world 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm bookmarking this so that when I'm feeling depressed about my lack of creativity I'll just look at this list.

[–] HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Frame it right above the desk and next to the live laugh lube sign

[–] blackris@discuss.tchncs.de 28 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yet another example for: popularity doesn't equal quality. I mean there will be more enough money in those movies for a high production value, but what an uninspiring bunch of crap!

[–] DarkThoughts@fedia.io 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah, serious parallels to the Steam awards.

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Truly one of the lists of all time

[–] reddig33@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago (1 children)

According to whom? Some marketing employee at IMDB?

[–] TheImpressiveX@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So it's based on the completely unbiased opinions of people who pay a premium for some sort of extra content on IMDb, if I'm understanding correctly?

[–] TheImpressiveX@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's correct.

If you want alternative sources, Rolling Stone has their own list of 'Most Anticipated Movies of 2025'.

[–] keyez@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Dang this list is a lot better. Also curious if The Brutalist doesn't count as a 2025 movie, I'm excited for that one and not able to see it for a few more weeks.

[–] BentiGorlich@gehirneimer.de 23 points 1 year ago

I am literally not interested in any of them 😂

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 20 points 1 year ago (1 children)

28 Years Later is directed by Danny Boyle, the same director of the original. Alex Garland wrote the original. Garland and Boyle wrote 28 Years together.

I think I’ll give it a chance.

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Have you seen the trailer? It was a very good trailer. I don’t say that often.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ve deliberately not watched the trailer to avoid spoilers. Yes, I’m one of those people.

[–] VoteNixon2016@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Normally I'm the same way; nearly every movie I've been excited to see in theaters, I've made a point to avoid the trailers for it. But with 28 Years Later, I was excited to see the trailer again when I went to a movie, after already watching it intentionally. It's what a trailer should be, instead of the usual "here are the best scenes, funniest jokes, and every major plot point" we usually get

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 2 points 1 year ago

You gave me an excuse to do something I wanted to do anyway. I just watched it, and it was great! Thanks!

[–] hal_5700X@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Great. Superhero, remakes, and sequels. Amazing. /s

Select big studio movies, sort by marketing budget descending

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I wasn't aware anyone cared about Thunderboltcats or Capt Weaksauce.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Only curious how bad they'll both be just based on the trailers.

Well and that Disney plus show

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I enjoy a good bombed movie, too.
I was watching a video earlier about how bad the ADR is in the madam spider movie. It's pretty entertaining.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just don't know if it's even gonna be a fun bad movie

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Probably not. I wouldn't expect it.

[–] hactar42@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 year ago (1 children)

"I can't wait for them to reboot The Fantastic Four again" said nobody ever

[–] TheFriar@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That one literally looks like it’s a joke

Remake.

Sequel.

Prequel.

Remake.

??? (Ripoff)

Sequel.

Remake.

Sequel.

Shameless money grab. (Oh wait that's all of them)

Sequel.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

I can't believe the only entry on this list that isn't an unnecessary sequel or an extremely unnecessary reboot is a fucking video game movie.

Because those are never trash, right?

People voted for this shit? Or were there just no other choices on the ballot?

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

I'm excited for the new Bong Joon Ho movie Mickey 17

[–] Prox@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What is Thunderbolts? Just MCU's version of Suicide Squad?

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 7 points 1 year ago

Basically, yeah.

[–] B0NK3RS@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

I'm in for 28 Years Later and Mission Impossible but I think the majority of movie lists are just uninspiring and boring.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

ugh, there are like just 2 new movies in that list

[–] erusuoyera@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

Which 2 are not a remake, sequel or adaptation?

[–] ryan213@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

I'm in for the first two!

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago (4 children)

What's with the asterisks on Thunderbolts?

Looking forward to 1, 2 and 6. The rest aren’t on my radar.

A lot of this stuff capitalizes on our desire for nostalgia. When shit is going bad, you reach for something you know and remember fondly. Capitalism banks on that. That’s why we have so many reboots and sequels. It’s not a bad thing if they’re not obvious cash grabs and you just need a pickup, but it’s also very lazy. It’s another sign that a cultural plateau is where everything is at.

The reality is that the majority of movie viewers want more of what feels safe.

[–] watson387@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just 1 & 2 here. The rest just look like cash-grabs.

[–] orca@orcas.enjoying.yachts 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’m looking forward to 6 because I like Anthony Mackie (Twisted Metal was awesome) and want to see how his story goes. The MCU has felt unmoored and that could be a good one in the mix.

[–] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Honestly we could do with a decent "grounded" movie in the MCU, similar to Winter Soldier.

I think the less powerful superheroes work best in detective-type stories.
