Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on. Keep on-topic

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Jesus, that's a bad headline. She wasn't sentenced for the home birth; she was sentenced for her part and cover-up of her husband raping and impregnating their daughter. The lack of proper medical care is just part of the cover-up.

every conservative is like this. this is the world they want. this is their utopia.

[–] DrunkenDuckling@lemmus.org 40 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is why they want homeschooling, much easier to abuse children away from prying eyes

[–] nickiwest@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is sad, but true.

At my first teaching job, a first-grader told her teachers and the principal that the bruises on her legs were from her mom hitting her with a belt. We reported it to Child Protective Services, and when they followed up, the mom pulled her out of school to "homeschool" her instead.

Covering up physical abuse is one of many reasons why homeschooling needs more oversight.

Isn't CPS supposed to be a sharp sword of the state?

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Supposed to be, but (like everything else) it's incredibly underfunded.

What's even weirder is that they gave the mother 7 consecutive life sentences, but the father who actually impregnated the child only got 1 life sentence + 42 years.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

1 life sentence + 42 years.

ok but that is enough. the mom just got Overkill+

They do it that way so even with good behavior or some appeals for a commuted sentence, still ends up being more years than they'll live by a mile.

There’s no hate like Christian love.

[–] artemia@thelemmy.club 5 points 2 days ago

Agreed but how is that relevant here? I see no indication of it in the story

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 119 points 3 days ago

Things I wish I could unread.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago

I hear people say Oklahoma is the most free state in the union, and yet they won't let you rape your own child and force her to give birth? That's not the America my ancestors had nothing to do with building.

[–] Blibittyblah@futurology.today 113 points 3 days ago (6 children)

A 34-year-old Oklahoma mother will spend the rest of her life behind bars for allowing her husband to impregnate her 11-year-old daughter, then forcing the child to give birth at home without any medical care.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 90 points 3 days ago (1 children)

i thought the post title was bad enough.. but daaaaaaamn. they sure do go the extra mile.

That's not even the worst thing said in that article:

"This child is traumatized. She's been through a horrific ordeal," [Assistant District Attorney Janet] Hutson previously said in an interview with Tulsa CBS affiliate KOTV. "Not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance, and this will be her life for the rest of her life."

"This will be her life for the rest of her life"??? I know it's the job of the prosecutor to frame things in the worst way, but fuck everything about that. Whoever is left of her family needs to do everything they can to try to help her get past this trauma. And that baby is not her responsibility, either, and never will be.

[–] Blibittyblah@futurology.today 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This is Oklahoma, she’s gonna have to raise it.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

If you're going to say things like that, then I'd expect you to say something like, "This is Oklahoma. A child of child rape is just raised as their mother's sister. It's so common that they put that rule in the state constitution."

"Brotherson" is a word I had never expected to learn, and in retrospect one I had hoped to never know.

Edit: The article is vague, so I suppose "sisterdaughter" is another word I can add to the list of words I don't want to think about.

Yep, the news from the Oklahoma Oblast no longer surprises me. Certainly the Orange Pedo Shitstain will pardon the sick bastards because that is why he is mentioned over 38,000 times in a certain set of files.

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Certainly the Orange Pedo Shitstain will pardon the sick bastards

He doesn't have pardon power over state charges. But, it is Oklahoma. So, Republican governor Kevin Stitt will still probably give it. After all, the Republican position seems to be that abusing children is a good thing.

The headline: oh that sounds horrible.

The description on this post: even worse than I thought it would be.

The article: not a single picture of the husband, who is also serving a life sentence. I wanna see what that mistake of a person looks like.

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

There wasn't a picture because he was already sentenced months ago. The woman's article even links to that article.

[–] Photon1c@lemmy.world 35 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

This entire article and some clarifications in the comments make me feel sick. This entire story is fucked up and i wish I hadn’t read it. Poor child is traumatised for life

[–] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Sadder still, society will expect her get over it and carry on. Society doesn’t understand that there’s no “normal” for her any more.

Thank you for this warning.

Someone once wrote a comment on the internet which i read, which said something like, " when you have a choice to look at something traumatic or not, you don't have to look. "

[–] Corvidae@lemmy.world 61 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Such a difference between this and Epstein, while the subject of sexual abuse of minors is roughly the same. I guess the lesson is, if you're gonna rape and pillage, first be filthy rich.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 31 points 3 days ago

Always has been.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 60 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh gosh oh gee, I wonder who they voted for?

[–] Blooper@lemmy.world 89 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Really? Come on. That's quite a stretch you're making here - really grasping at straws to assume they might have voted for anyone other than Trump. The nerve.

[–] Lydia_K@lemmy.world 49 points 3 days ago

Had me in the first half...

Why was an 11 year old pregnant?

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 56 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Because the woman's pedophile husband impregnated her.

So this child rapist gets life in prison, but the one doing it at scale gets… the Presidency.

[–] chewypoops@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So the husband gets one life sentence for doing it, and the wife gets seven life sentences for allowing it?

They both deserve life in prison, but why did the actual perpetrator get a lesser sentence?
