Why do old people always ask 'who are these people?' when you show them anything? They clearly know the concept of images of strange people from news anchors or infomercials or America's funniest home videos. Why is it that they need to know who's cat this is when I'm showing them a funny video?

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 65 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Old people come from a time where everything was a thing. Everybody watched the same exact shit on TV. Everyone saw the same movies. If anything was anything it was because everyone knew about it. Or if they didnt know about it, someone they knew knew about it

Old people cannot comprehend a world in which media is a trove of infinite niche and hardly anyone knows about the exact same set of 12 things that happened this week

So they see a random meme and wonder why anyone would know it exists without being a thing they missed somehow

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 26 points 3 days ago

Wow that was well described

Bc no one taught them how to look it up on Know Your Meme.

Some of the "elders" might have experienced and even went along with bad ideas earlier in their lives despite their best intentions. So instead of saying "no, that is wrong" they're questioning random shit posts, because sarcasm is just not the best way to communicate between people with different references.

When they ask "who are these people" they really mean "source" to make you question the origin of the idea that you're presenting - even if it's sarcasm.

life is a little more strange when you don't even know who any of the famous people are anymore.

Grandma passed the vibe check, tbh.

Unfortunately it is too late for that.

not the worst thing someone's drunk texted their grandma

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Now I want to see the worst thing someone has drunk texted their grandma.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Probably not THE worst, but I don't think there would be a good occasion to send your grandma either of these gifs

[–] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Third Gif, Grandma raised them but was abusive.

Actually, that scenario works for all three, huh?

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (3 children)

One time I sexted my grandma and she sent me a picture of her pussy.

Looked like a piece of beef jerky.

SMCF: not the hero we need right now, but definitely the one we deserve

Can you explain to me who these people are and what the meme means also?

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 11 points 2 days ago

Dude, it's Jill, Benjamin and his grandma, Betty.

[–] PoopingCough@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I don't know that it's a reference. Think it's just a silly lil goof

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Is this one of those generational humors? I don't get what is funny about polluting the ocean :(

Or why the top image is juxtaposed with the bottom?

I guess I'm the grandma now

[–] ARMADILLOMANIA@lemmy.today 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

The basic joke setup is an expectation that the training is done for a more noble cause than impressing a girl. Then the punchline is doing an environmental crime for an old lady. (Also, you can see font change on the battery part which might indicate that the original comic used to have a wholesome message.)

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh, i did not make the connection between "being strong" and "car battery heavy," that makes more sense now!

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

Yeah the thing that makes car batteries tick is lead. Even fancy ones like AGM and whatnot are still lead acid. It's been said that a battery's quality can be told by its weight because more lead = more good

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago

Ohhhh he needed to workout before he was capable of lifting and throwing the batteries. I get it now.

Those of you that have a relationship with your grandparents, please cherish it. All my grandparents are dead and I barely knew any of them. They never really talked to me because they lived so far away and so seeing each other was really awkward. Like strangers trying to catch up.
