They do. I have seen a few of them that include someone showing relief at a negative result.

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 6 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Don't they already do this?

I've definitely seen one that was 2 pictures. 1 a couple, obviously hoping for a positive. The other a lone teen/20s girl, obviously hoping for a negative. The caption was along other lines of "Here's hoping for the result you want."

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world -5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Eh, that still kind of fits the narrative of "she should be a baby incubator but she should've waited til marriage so the man will support her"

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

More that a couple in a committed relationship can choose to become parents. It's an unfortunate fact of biology that it must be the woman involved carrying the baby.

[–] PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

A committed relationship can also choose to celebrate a negative test, a single woman can also celebrate a positive one

[–] cynar@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

True, but trying to fit that in an advert will never work. Stereotypes exist for a reason, they are a quick and dirty way of transmitting a lot of background information (for better or for worse).

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 5 points 15 hours ago

Wouldn't that be more effective for a birth control pill commercial.

I feel like I’ve seen an ad that said something along the lines of “whatever result you’re hoping for, we can get it sooner and more accurately than blah blah” and it showed several different (happy/relieved) reactions to the results without clearly stating what the results were

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

No i want it to include all the reactions. including this one

representation matters

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I think the taboo aspect here is that it would imply sex can be something done for fun rather than procreation.

[–] UnequalExchange@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

ya and the overlords DEFINITELY dont want that.

Think of those poor poor widdle billionaires , wont you!? Who will give them more slaves , if we dont ? 🥺

[–] UnequalExchange@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

my only problem with this is that commercial on screen shouldnt be whst you use to decide MASSIVE changes in your life like havign a kid or not having a kid

Real life is typically its own commercial . A person simply has to pay enough attention to those people in their lives and their environments around them and do enough soul-searching within themselves and theyll start to see these 'commercials' all around them all the time. Its a really interesting 'experiment' I would highly recommend👍🏿

Thats how I learned I trily dont see today's world as being fit to give birth to a child in. Its just....too...., greedy, fucked up, and genoc1dal.

[–] NathanDerWeise@feddit.org 71 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Never really thought about this, but what if we showed them having a positive response without showing what the results were? Then the audience can decide.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 28 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The positive reaction to a positive test tends to be elation. The positive reaction to a negative test tends to be relief.

They aren't really the same and to be honest it would be better if it was explicit and both were included. I seem to recall such a commercial already exists, but am too lazy to find it.

Edit: oh, it was posted in another comment Clear Blue did just that in 2021

[–] fireweed@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It should still be pretty obvious what the results were, as "OMG I'm pregnant!!!" and "ohthankgod I'm not pregnant" are two very different expressions.

[–] ricecake@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

Nah, you just need art direction. Show someone waiting for the test. They look anxious. Show their stereotyped hourglass timer finish counting, they pick up the test, read the unshown result, close their eyes and give a "not anxious anymore" smile while they take a deep breath, the camera panning up and over towards a sunny window just as their reaction expression hints at showing.

You're not selling pregnant or not pregnant. You're selling not worrying or knowing. So you don't need to convey the emotion of the result, just the emotion of "no longer anxious to find out".

If they have a drink or a multivitamin afterwards is aside from what you're selling.

That's an excellent idea.

Maybe a little bit of both? After all, the target demographic for pregnancy tests include both those that are, and those that aren't trying to get pregnant.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The ad would be memorable and hilarious if it showed both couples celebrating.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago

Or a positive test and they're panicking and crying lol

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd venture a guess that many more women are relieved when it's negative, than thrilled when it's positive.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I mean, ymmv. People trying to get pregnant will be going through tests a lot faster than people who are on contraception or simply celibate. Accidental pregnancies are a lot rarer today than they were even a few decades ago.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Wanting better representation in ads is a desire I can't relate to at all. Because fuck ads, I'd go out of my way to avoid knowing what content they contain at all.

Though this does bring to mind some condom commercials from back before I effectively removed most advertisements from my life.

[–] halezinflames@lemmus.org 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do we need a commercial for that?

[–] UnequalExchange@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Imdeed! Sometimes real life is the best commercial! Right?

the best commercial for me was looking at those annoying kids who do all types of selfish and destructive shit for the most nonsensical and sometimes even laughable reasons...

And those kids who accidentally have a kid and end up raising them terribly or throwing the responsibility over to the grandparents....

And even myself (ya I wasmt the best kid truth be told ) ....

Or those horror stories from women (and even men too) who end up regretting their child even though their region practically banned abortions and made birth controls and sterilizations very restrictive....

I went out of my way to skip commercials when I was a kid and now that Im an adult, so I highly doubt a commercial would have helped to convince me to get the vasectomy I got lol.

Real life and the regretful parents I observed o were the 'commercial' and it was very effective lol.

And walking out of an abortion clinic with a spring in their step and the promise of a bright future without an unwanted child ruining their life

[–] Beth@piefed.social 24 points 1 day ago

Well a lot of women don’t necessarily celebrate it—fetuses have to be aborted for many reasons and come with many emotions. But I think you’ve got the spirit.
