Accept this declaration of economic war on your closest ally.

Whoa whoa whoa! Who said anything about tariffs on Israel?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 hours ago

forcing a vote to nullify the emergency declaration that underpins the tariffs on Canada.

One wonders why any president should have had this power to begin with.

Unfortunately, the people pushing AI are the same ones selling recreational flamethrowers

Which goes back to high participation.

I'm forced to question whether the fixation on AI and naked attempted art crashing the economy are explicitly intended to force more people down into unskilled service and agriculture jobs.

young people not wanting to work,

Some of the lowest unemployment numbers in US History, but young people still "don't want to work".

If cops start ignoring judges, citizens can start ignoring cops.

A tightly knit, professionally trained, ideologically uniform organization is going to be a bigger danger to the public at large than a random subset of disorganized dissidents will be to the police.

Id LOVE to see ICE try some shit in LA or Fresno.

While it would be extremely entertaining to see ICE stumble dick first into an LA County Deputies Gang, they are more likely to find common cause than conflict given that they're both fascist af.

It's great for getting off the ground in a language you're unfamiliar with. But a recipe for technical debt when used long term. You're inviting spaghetti code with some real hair pulling bugs.

Okay, but how do I personally monetize non-honey making bees? Sure, the general ecology needs this, but what's in it for me, right this instant?

These rules seem arbitrary and capricious. If the dog is well-trained, the owner is able to meet its needs on the go, and nobody else is explicitly being bothered, there's no compelling reason to block it from any of these establishments.

All of the above hold true for therapy animals, for instance. This isn't about the animal being well-trained, it is about both the pet and the person to be comfortable and happy, without impinging on the comfort and happiness of others. Locking well-behaved pets out of all of the above establishments does nothing to improve your comfort or happiness. It only serves to inconvenience others.

Walking in with my pants rolled up to mid-calf and the knees busted out like I've been giving head at the local truck stop for the last three weeks. I've got a full head of hair, yet I insist on shaving everything but the crown. I absolutely cannot grow a beard, and I refuse to get a proper shave. I'm wearing a watch in the year 2025, purely to show off how much money I can throw at one of the only allowed men's accessories. Neck. Tattoos. There's a 50/50 chance I'm wearing socks.

The entire cast of the Jersey Shore is lining up to get my number. Everyone else is staying at the distance necessary not to smell the patchouli.

China also has detained Canadian citizens

In Beijing, while operating as intelligence assets to the detriment of the country.

Kovrig was considered an intelligence asset, as a diplomatic officer at the Global Security Reporting Program (GSRP) within the Canadian embassy in Beijing, and later when based in Hong Kong at International Crisis Group, according to a 2023 report

This appears to be in direct response to the Canadian arrest and prosecution of Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, who was visiting Canada on business and was arrested with intent to extradite her to the US. That arrest was in pursuit of a US sanction against Iran, another country whose people were chronically subjected to infiltratation, sabotage, and assassination by Western security and paramilitary forces.

What this had to do with Canadian Sovereignty is not clear. Are Canadian spies arrested on Chinese soil in reprisal for the seizure and extradition of a Chinese businesswoman a threat to Canadian Independence? Because it seems to be the absolute opposite.

South Korea showed us that when someone in power tries to do a crazy thing the country as a wholw will actually do something to stop them

The South of Korea has been under occupation by American military and intelligence services since the 1950s. This particular president's coup attempt threatened the interests of American State officials, so the Korean military friendly with the US allowed the coup to fail. But the parliament has done little to curb a future Yoon or Park administration from returning to power in the next election cycle, under a far more coup-favorable Trump State Department.

Dems signing on for a rules change that allows a single Congressperson to declare themselves a delegate for multiple absent colleagues, as Trump works to consolidate the executive branch and gut the courts feels... unwise.

On Friday, president Donald Trump had signed an Executive Order, Continuing the Reduction of the Federal Bureaucracy, directing severe cuts to IMLS, which provides resources to museums and libraries in all 50 states and territories, calling for it to be “eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law” within seven days. Staff had already been reduced, said the employee, due to steps like the termination of probationary employees.

Word quickly got out Thursday morning on a whistleblowers’ channel on Reddit. “The Institute of Museum and Library Services is being raided by DOGE and the new Acting Director (also somehow DepSec of Labor) Keith Sonderling with the express intent to shut it down,” wrote one anonymous poster. “Sonderling was sworn-in in the lobby of the office building and they are proceeding with quickly and quietly dismantling the agency. There are Department of Homeland Security personnel present—to bully a bunch of civil servants who administer grants to museums and libraries.”

Ross Glick, a pro-Israel activist who previously shared a list of campus protesters with federal immigration authorities, said that he was in Washington, D.C., for meetings with members of Congress during the Barnard library demonstration and discussed Khalil with aides to Sens. Ted Cruz and John Fetterman who promised to “escalate” the issue. He said that some members of Columbia’s board had also reported Khalil to officials.

“This unfolded very quickly because it was obvious,” Glick said in an interview Monday.“Everybody was upset,” he recalled of his meetings on the Hill. “The guy was making it too easy for us.”

"Indivisible is urging people who are scared to call their member of Congress, whether they have a Democrat or Republican, and make specific procedural asks," Greenberg said.

"Our supporters are asking Democrats to demand specific red lines are met before they offer their vote to House Republicans on the budget, when Republicans inevitably fail to pass a bill on their own."

Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, has said that any immigrants who pose “public safety and national security threats” will be targeted for deportation first. Rhetoric that paints America’s 45 million immigrants as “threats” to public safety is a key Republican strategy to drum up support for mass deportations. One of the first bills passed by the Republican House in the new Congress was the Laken Riley Act, after the 22-year-old nursing student who was killed in February 2024 by a Venezuelan man who had entered the country illegally. The bill would require any undocumented person or DACA recipient arrested for burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting-related offenses to be detained, even if they are ultimately never charged with a crime.

"CPS will continue to protect our students and their families in alignment with the Illinois TRUST Act and Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance," one school official said.

Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates called the situation "unprecedented" at a news conference Friday afternoon.

After receiving the text for the ad quoted above, a representative from the advertising team suggested AFSC use the word “war” instead of “genocide” – a word with an entirely different meaning both colloquially and under international law. When AFSC rejected this approach, the New York Times Ad Acceptability Team sent an email that read in part: “Various international bodies, human rights organizations, and governments have differing views on the situation. In line with our commitment to factual accuracy and adherence to legal standards, we must ensure that all advertising content complies with these widely applied definitions.”

After more than two years undercover, he’d been growing rash and impulsive. He had feared someone was in danger and tried to warn him, but it backfired. Williams was sure at least one person knew he was a double agent now, he said into his phone. “It’s only a matter of time before it gets back to the rest.”

In the daylight, Williams dropped an envelope with no return address in a U.S. Postal Service mailbox. He’d loaded it with a flash drive and a gold Oath Keepers medallion.

It was addressed to me.

The documents laid out a remarkable odyssey. Posing as an ideological compatriot, Williams had penetrated the top ranks of two of the most prominent right-wing militias in the country. He’d slept in the home of the man who claims to be the new head of the Oath Keepers, rifling through his files in the middle of the night. He’d devised elaborate ruses to gather evidence of militias’ ties to high-ranking law enforcement officials. He’d uncovered secret operations like the surveillance of a young journalist, then improvised ways to sabotage the militants’ schemes. In one group, his ploys were so successful that he became the militia’s top commander in the state of Utah.

In 2025, Mexico’s current challenges are likely to worsen, as the recently inaugurated Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo administration (2024–30) has shown an unwillingness to depart from the policy playbook of the Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration (2018–24) — a playbook that has already proven unable to resolve most of the country’s problems.Political and diplomatic relations are headed for a rocky year, as Mexico drifts further away from a strategic allyship position with the United States on several items.
