Reading this actually feels like driving my boybrain over a speedbump
My entirely amateur guess is that our peripheral vision interprets the black and white plus signs as highlights and shadows on a rolling surface.
A bit like how we know there are 3D waves in this image because of the highlights and shadows, while knowing that the water is all the "same color":
