I can't remember the title but that's pretty much the same plot as the first english romance novel ever written.

It "makes sense" considering the honor-shame society the story was created for. A pure, pious woman is pitted against a shameful, violent man. The central motif is the radiant woman purifying the shameful man who converts (to Christianity) and courts the woman according to social norms instead of violently raping her. This is framed as a good ending because his shame is removed.

If you value innocence over honor this is completely incomprehensible. The guilt is still there, it was never accounted for.

Edit: Oh, and Marry-your-rapist-laws were and are still more common than you might know. Even if countries that don't have one, individual courts may still decide that way.

In 2018, Greece repealed article 339 (3), which allowed marriage as a permissible settlement for "seduction" of a child.

Turkey's rape-marriage law was repealed in 2005, as part of efforts to join the European Union. In November 2016, a government plan to reinstate the law and exonerate around 3,000 rapists by having them marry their victims was cancelled due to mass protests.

You break it, you buy it. Children and women are property to alot of people and some governments

[–] SuluBeddu@feddit.it 9 points 6 days ago

I've recently watched a lecture by Graeber about dowry and bride pricing, and yeah I get where these laws come from

But to keep them until 2018 is wild

It was not without criticism in its day...for mentioning sex and approving of class mixing.

[–] forkDestroyer@infosec.pub 9 points 6 days ago

Every war really is a class war?

[–] nutbutter@discuss.tchncs.de 50 points 6 days ago (1 children)

This is kind of something that actually happens (or at least used to happen) in India.

If a man rapes a woman, people say that he must marry the woman, because "her honour is ruined" or something, and nobody else will accept her as a wife.

I'm pretty sure this still happens in rural areas, where panchayat is the judge and jury.

[–] sonofearth@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

It still happens in tier 1 cities even in rich families.

Then she locks them in a crate and buries them alive, right? Right!?

[–] Avicenna@programming.dev 42 points 6 days ago

tragically everything except the last part happens quite regularly in certain countries

I'm Pakistani. The subcontinent is super conservative. You have to remember the British rules over us for centuries and all our grandparents want to do is to imitate them.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 22 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure the rape marry thing and even forced child marriages predated the British.

Not that the British weren't complete evil shits, but I don't think this one is on them.

I wasn't blaming British, I was just trying to say that we believe very strongly in hierarchy. To the point where we aren't even really that mad at our colonizers. This fits the culture.

Isn't this also a rule in the bible?

Eta: yup

Deut. 22:28-29

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered,Β he shall pay her father fifty shekelsΒ of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

[–] Sybilvane@lemmy.ca 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The "and they are discovered" is extra icing on this shit cake.

How I despise all those backwards inbred rednecks all around the world, no matter the country.

If we could just eradicate religion and replace it with education, that would be a start...
