People seem surprised that Herbert did draw inspiration from real life events. Dune is losely based on Russian imperialism in the Muslim Caucasus region. Which is also a region rich in oil deposits. This isn't Herbert seeing the future as much as history repeating.

https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/the-secret-history-of-dune is an interesting read.

I mean, the savior in the story is literally called the Mahdi, which is also the savior in Shia Islam.

Very funny scene, but honestly not relevant

[โ€“] Napster153@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

The Mahdi is a universally accepted prophesy, and one many pretenders have attempted.

Most are on par with the Leader of the Boxer Rebellion on that they never read the details behind said prophecy.

The Russian leaders weren't a bunch of bloated pedophiles tho, were they?

[โ€“] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago

You would be horrified how many leaders are. Its comes with the mindset. "Those who seek power rarely deserve it; and those who deserve power, rarely seek it."

I'm not saying you have to be on drugs to imagine space sex ninjas on cocaine planet, but I am saying something was on.

Herbert was on spice when he was writing Dune in 1965 because how else he could see the future of the USA?

[โ€“] Jiggs@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Possibly because history tends to repeat itself. Especially in case of US starting conflicts there. Could easily see the Operation Ajax being what he based the book on.

Same with cyberpunk lore. Often that reads like current events, but in the end it's extrapolation of events back then mixed with knowledge of history.

Well the red flags have always been there from the beginning but the people chose to look the other way, considering the genocide of Native Americans had been a policy since the beginning.

[โ€“] Phantaloons@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Look at its past.

[โ€“] Dzheyk@sh.itjust.works 36 points 1 week ago

This made me giggle in the best way possible

[โ€“] Etterra@discuss.online 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Is there a drug that gives you visions of the future?

[โ€“] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Whatever drugs he was on, I want some. Just like one or two doses. So I can forget about all this bullshit for a little while. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

[โ€“] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Listen, there may be a drug at the gas station called spice, but do NOT smoke it!

[โ€“] Akasazh@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

I prefer my spice vintage:

[โ€“] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Will it help you forget or will it make you see every potential outcome?

We can resurrect this pile of shit

[โ€“] gh0stb4tz@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Itโ€™s well known that shrooms inspired him when he wrote the Dune series.

It was not known to me but based just on the description of melange and how Paul saw reality after taking it, it should have been obvious

Keeping with the story, if only Iran had a white savior to come and free them! /s

Frank Herbert and Philip K. Dick were high as fuck and they were creative but very fucking stupid

[โ€“] silver@das-eck.haus 7 points 1 week ago

Harkonnen was only appointed to manage a war, and to decapitate the only threat to the imperial throne.

[โ€“] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Emperor pitted two historic rival houses against one another, with the expectation that they'd annihilate themselves and leave room for upstarts to take their place. The Bene Jesuits had seen this cycle play out before and knew it would preserve the Emperor's power at the expense of the advancement of the society as a whole. So, they backchanneled a breeding program between Atreides and Harkonen - on the Atreides side via Lady Jessica and Duke Leto, on the Harkonen side between Feyd-Rautha and Margot Fenring - to yield the prophesied optimal off-spring, the Kwisatz Hadarach.

But all of this ran afoul of a third agency, the Planetologists of Dune, who believed the planet's perpetual condition of spice harvest was undermining what could be a new kind of Eden for domestic development and liberation. Their efforts to irrigate Arakus at the expense of the global galactic trade (catalyzed by Lady Jessica's unlicensed male hier) was what ultimately undermined both the Emperor's political schemes and the Bene Jesuits' breeding program.

In the end, the primary antagonists of the Dune series are the environmentalists, fighting a guerrilla war against a Galactic Oil & Gas Industry.

[โ€“] ICastFist@programming.dev 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bene Jesuit, now I can't help but think all those ladies were secretly the catholic church all along ๐Ÿคฃ

[โ€“] Napster153@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Just like in real life!

Corn. Beans. Why are hu-mans so tedious.

[โ€“] Akamun@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

This has happened a lot in history. But things change and what used to work just fail. He was unable to adapt quickly.

While his opponent remade themselves every time.

[โ€“] spacegoat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

How big is his dick, canonically

[โ€“] binux@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Heโ€™s got chode energy for sure

[โ€“] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Eh, not so much about history repeating itself or seeing the future. These things tend to happen when you have dumb cretins in power, that don't learn from history. It's dead simple to avoid a mistake if you read a book and someone else has made it and with the power of hindsight you have the solution now. But some people are even too dumb for that. Enter the world of Donald Trump.
