Games are not losing attention. AAA publishers have been copy/pasting the same game for 2 decades.

Their greed made them risk averse which is just another way to say boring in an artistic medium.

Pragmata isn't the game competing with crypto, gambling, porn, and TikTok. That would be the likes of EA's Not-FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny, NBA 2K; the kind of game that sells to people who don't play many different video games.

[–] rafoix@lemmy.zip 16 points 2 weeks ago

But have you heard of live service games? Gamers will continually pay for a 10-hour game with mechanics designed to trap lonely people with compulsive addiction issues for 5000 per year. Imagine all the billions that we will make from those ~~suckers~~ gamers.

Its not just "risk averse", its easy money. Look at Forza 6. Or the dozen different sports games that get rehashed every year. They sell like crazy.

The location, modes, and featured cars are continually changing in Forza. I'm lagging on the titles and will probably skip Forza Horizon 5, but FH6 has great reviews on launch. While I can guess you aren't into cars/racing like that, I guess I can't really differentiate it from human sports games as much as I thought I could. A new football game has the same field shape, the same rules, and mostly the same teams, but just updates the roster and maybe background appearance? I don't get it. But I can see the correlation to racing games if driving is a chore (not me) and if you aren't up to date on the latest trends in cars (me). I guess both really come down to whether or not you can empathetically experience the game as something you actually want to do.

It's also been 4 years since the last FH. The shortest interval was 2 years, done twice. Six titles across 14 years. Forza Motorsport # is a different style and, unfortunately, has likely been ended.

Top tier copium. FIFA games also release to raving reviews every couple of years. It's just FOMO.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

And your last 20 comments are you being a condescending twat, so I'll go ahead and ignore you without looking further. I'll check again after you've done a track day

That is Microsoft's ultimate problem, aside from how they started their current console cycle. They are too afraid to do something different, closing down studios that did something different and didn't meet unhinged sales metrics. I think that their studios need to be allowed to cook and work on their specialty, in order to bring something awesome to the table.

[–] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Bringing awesome to the table is not compatible with Corporations who are ~~legally obligated~~ strongly incentivized to be risk averse for the shareholders.

[–] musicalphysics@discuss.online 4 points 1 week ago

Corporations are not legally obligated to avoid risk.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, awesome games often happen by accident, not on purpose in Corporate run scenarios...Especially when you don't have heavy hitters that can often produce some real bangers in your ranks. Indie will always be the primary place where game innovation and breakout hits tend to happen.

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I bet crack cocaine is more addictive & attention grabbing too

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 18 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

What an odd statement. Xbox is in direct competition with porn and crypto? Do they know any of those things? Do they think people are just like "hm, 60 dollars. I could game, buy porn, or crypto. Hmmmmmm"

Anything to avoid looking inward. Their IPs have empty corporate souls because they're made by souless corporate entities. Halo, Gears, Starfield, all shallow empty stories, and gamers are tired of it.

Of course they don't have souls so they assume gamers don't either. Couldn't be that were gaming to enjoy a story or feel something deeply, no we're literally debating on gambling or video games. Jesus Christ so out of touch.

[–] hypnicjerk@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

let's be real: it's not a coincidence that sports gambling is an exploding market and sports games are shrinking. they are targeting the same people.

[–] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 11 points 2 weeks ago

I'll concede there, sports gaming and sports gaming are very overlapping venn diagrams

[–] ampersandrew@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They just hired this guy, and he made those statements before that, so it's not avoiding looking inward. Besides there very much is a customer they're losing to these other things, and they're the largest market segment in gaming. It's just not your demographic.

[–] 64bithero@lemmy.world 15 points 2 weeks ago

No no everyone things are way better now. They hit caps lock before they type Xbox now. So the world is fixed.

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Just look at Stellaris, Factorio or Rimworld players to know this is false. What modern games are clearly missing is genocide and crimes against humanity.

[–] thecaptaintrout@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Been playing Stellaris since literal day one. Quality of new dlc had gone down, but there is definitely heart and soul put into it.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a player of Stellaris, Stellaris players are crazy. They spend too much money on the games on DLC, that game has like more than $500 in DLC probably. Its insane.

I just play multiplayer with someone who... acquired.... the DLC lol.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

They spend too much money on the games on DLC, that game has like more than $500 in DLC probably. Its insane.

The Sims 4 is currently up to $1,596.89 with all DLC on Steam.

DCS is up to $4,368.28 with all DLC on Steam (though in fairness, I think that it's very likely that almost all players are not getting all planes, but rather picking specific ones that they're interested in playing, and a lot of that is different planes.)

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Oh I am fully aware. I have DCS too. I think I bought the game and the P51 Mustang on a sale, but I haven't been able to fly anything esle because I ain't buying all that and I don't have the time with other games to care about it honestly.

[–] BC_viper@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

I cant wait to get my crypto based porn casino Xbox game.

Gaming has gotten so huge that investors want to target the most lucrative segments of their market. It's not that you can't make money with games. It's that exploiting addiction is better at wealth extraction.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (4 children)

Incoming xboxXXX online powered by microshitcoin?

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

[–] dan1101@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

[–] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

It's the only strategy MSFT hasn't tried yet.

[–] XeroxCool@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

My Xb One is already named XXXBONE

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Even if you like all 3 of the other things, it doesn't mean you need it in gaming. It's not as though porn thinks it needs to blend in other attention competitions. A lot of games have math overlap. Gambling is for conning people bad at math.

In summary, this all seems like bad directions.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

The report isn't trying to say they need to add those thing to gaming.

I don't understand how this whole thread has misunderstood the report point so thoroughly...

The report is saying those 3 things are now more popular and have a higher amount of attention given to them than gaming and that publishers need to do better in order regain attention.

The prior parts of the report deal with how publishers have effectively cancelled and shut down so much that there is little to play.

[–] demonsword@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Gambling is for ~~conning people bad at math~~ exploiting people with poor impulse control

and gambling addiction is a serious issue that can't be dismissed so easily

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I want gaming to be a health business that makes it long term but going after crackheads addicted to gambling, porn, and get rich quick schemes ain’t it

[–] warmaster@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Classic Microsoft, hire a competent person to make the unit great and then proceed to sabotage everything.

[–] andrewmsc@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

lmao they are blaming anything but their ridiculous online membership prices. nintendo has no problem selling consoles and games

[–] nicpicname@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago

As if Nintendo doesn't fuck over their consumers

[–] tal@lemmy.today 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

That doesn't really seem like mutually-exclusive stuff.

You can definitely make video games that incorporate pornography.

Gambling is probably also generally-available, though some locales have pretty restrictive law on online gambling.

I don't know about crypto, but if "crypto" in this context is effectively "gambling by trying to trade cryptocurrencies", I'd think that that basically falls into the gambling category.

The article also mentions TikTok. I don't know how readily you can do that

TikTok is maybe the closest analog to television in the Internet era, and video games are something you actively participate in. It might be possible to introduce categories of mostly-passive video games, where the player has some limited degree of interactivity but is mostly watching what's going on, and where there aren't hard real-time demands on their attention. Like, a game that you can viably play while simultaneously eating dinner or something.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

where the player has some limited degree of interactivity but is mostly watching what's going on

Telltale games has entered the chat.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 4 points 2 weeks ago
