Fuck AI

"We did it, Patrick! We made a technological breakthrough!"

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.

Oh nice. Well at least one good thing will come of this idiotic war if they succeed.

[–] oneser@lemmy.zip 54 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Arguably this energy crisis comes at an sub-optimal time for AI, where many models are struggling to monetize their models, while burning cash like mad. Either that, or they effectively just solar up the entire country in a matter of months...

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 21 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

There are not enough solar panels in the world available to pay for the LLMbecile data centres that are planned. And even if there were, most of them are in China. You think the Chinese are going to hand over their solar cells for any reason?

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, they will happily exchange solar panels for currency, that's how things work.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They have their own strategic needs to fill first. Ironically these are strategic needs brought about by Americans in the first place.

There is no way in which China is going to let American businesses destabilize China for a bit of money. China learned early, before the rest of the world did, how much damage the USA causes when they decide they don't like losing to their competition. The Chinese will sell their solar panels for currency once they have sufficiently isolated themselves from the whims of American hegemony and dishonest trade practices. By then the degenerative AI bubble will have popped, the US economy will have tanked, and nobody in the USA (up to and including its government) will have the money to afford Chinese solar panels.

Except that Chinese manufacturing, including solar panels and the associated equipment, are going through a deflationary cycle right now because provinces over invested in capacity.

And as far as I know, solar equipment isn't listed as a strategic industry yet.

For money, yes.

Between the US regime, the mullahs, and OpenAI, this has to be the hardest game of fuck, marry, avoid in history.

I didn't have "cheering on Iran" on my 2026 bingo card, but here we fuckin' well are.

[–] lemmy_outta_here@lemmy.world 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I know, right! The government of Iran is pure evil, but they are giving Trump hell and I kind of love it.

[–] Pman@lemmy.org 5 points 2 weeks ago

Well in this specific instance they seem to be fighting clankers in a real way and for that I will give them props, even if their regime is vile and should fall, not the only one mind you (the current US administration and supreme court, the Russian got, the Chinese, the north Korean, the Hungarians under Or an, the Turks under Erdogan, the Israelis under Netanyahu, and that's just scratching the surface all should be removed from control) but Iran's current regime might have done something good for once.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

What government isn't evil?

[–] Yuccagnocchiyaki@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Probably the ones not committing evil acts of genocide. They are easy to spot now because this regime treats them all as enemies while welcoming the dictators and their puppets.

[–] Murse@slrpnk.net 33 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe hit a few more 'AI' data centers, just to be sure. And perhaps a different type of good deed all together just for variety sake!

[–] kokesh@lemmy.world 31 points 2 weeks ago

Wow! That would be so awesome!

[–] rangber@lemmy.zip 29 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no! Anyway.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 27 points 2 weeks ago

do it. doo it. doot.

fucking hell though. fuck this timeline.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 23 points 2 weeks ago

Stop threatening, start doing!

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 16 points 2 weeks ago

Someone tell Iran they don't have the balls... so they do it.

[–] GreenBeanMachine@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Up likely, due to perceived scarcity as some is damaged / destroyed.

I thought stargate was in USA not UAE.

[–] Agrivar@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's the Stargate, which is still under Cheyenne Mountain IIRC.

Could/would something like this be insured? Surely not a lot of insurers would be willing to take a billion dollar (let alone 30) asset in a risky region? I really hope it isn't.
