Which, I imagine, can mostly be traced back to a handful of people

[–] slykethephoxenix@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They didn't even check Reddit?

[–] BilSabab@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

it stopped being fun like a decade ago anyway.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

It takes ten thousand to run a good system. It takes ten to fuck it up.

Top three countries in the internet disinformation game:

  1. China
  2. Russia
  3. Iran

You're just going along with being herded by the Iranian bots.

Yea Iran the country that owns all the western politicians /s

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca -2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Nah they just go on the internet and make you think that it's cool to blame everything on the Jews.

Looks like they got to you.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Israel doesn’t represent “the Jews” Israel is a settler colonialist state that relies on pseudoscience and supremisist ideology to justify the genocide and annexation of indigenous lands. The fact that YOU brought up Jewish people using a racialized slur to project an inference of bigotry on me is highly suspicious conduct. For the record Jewish people across the world have spoken out against the state of Israel for their actions. I find it very cowardly that a state can somehow claim the identity of a diverse group of people and use them as a shield for their nefarious agenda. Israel is putting Jewish people at risk and that is sickening

Yeah whatever... I don't know why you guys bother with the dog whistling at this point. The "anti-zionism" movement is clearly just a rebranding of antisemitism, it's only people that have been suckered into it that insist it isn't. There are already very clear signs that post-Trump the fascist movement will go down the antisemitic route. The usual antisemitic fascists are already using the term "zionists" when doing their antitsemitic conspiracy theories (see Candace Owens for example) and "socialists" are flocking to them.

Hmmm.... socialists joining a fascist movement because of antisemitism... history doesn't repeat, but it sure does rhyme, doesn't it?

And yet restrictions need to be passed on everyone instead of those obviously responsible for it.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 70 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Let's not regulate the social media corporations and algorithms who are amplifying propaganda and radicalization for profit though... Let's force everyone to verify their identity with a big brother constructed by the Epstein class... To protect the kids, of course!

[–] Pxtl@lemmy.ca 23 points 2 days ago

This is why I have conspiracy theories about the conspiracy theories about government-provided digital ID. We could have social media that allows us to know who is verified as a real Canadian human being and who is a truly-anonymous account.

But instead we're going to get "give your photos to Peter Thiel", which is a tech that doesn't solve the problem of anonymous disinfo-peddlers with shadowy backing, but does give the evilest people in the world a way to track you.

Especially since its' pretty easy to just flag an account on Microsoft or Google as a child account. If they really wanted to just detect children online so that sites can properly enforce adult-only rules, the browser could send that as a header flag.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: Cambridge Analytica (which is now a BC company whose name i forget) along with russians created Brexit and trump and the interests behind it are hell-bent on Canada next, starting with Alberta (apparrently).

Y’all need to fight them with everything possible to avoid being screwed like we were.

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

You misspelled Israeli’s

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

oligarchs do not care about nationality, they know better than any that there is no war but the class war

[–] GreenBeard@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Y’all need to fight them with everything possible to avoid being screwed like we were.

As an Albertan, I promise some of us are trying. Keep a close eye on BC, because I hear they have a BC "Prosperity Project" now too to swat down. Our hands are full trying to contain the damage here.

Emerdata, but I mean by now, Palantir and a dozen other businesses probably enjoying the smoke cover of being based in Israel "so don't accuse you or you are antisemitic, yo!" private intelligence agencies (as in, extremely politically partisan globally) are involved.

There's a reason Israel receives the support it has, and it has more to do with neocolonialism and relocation of those power groups within the private sector than it does the religion that provides the cover up for it. Having said that, Israel hasn't been the only front for these geopolitical games, it's just the most influential one because of how much of a feedback loop a relationship with those interests have for those involved.

That'd depend on time & context I guess but it's more likely to be the case now, yeah.

Fucking twitter users are morons and deserve to be duped by other twitter morons.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They tend to spread it onto other platforms though

[–] cravl@slrpnk.net 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I just learned about 20 minutes ago from another thread that the entire US government works off Twitter "intel" almost exclusively.

Last Week Tonight: Twitter

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I'm seeing this shit on nextdoor and LinkedIn now. Linkedin - the place where you earn brownie points by complimenting how your work bought you pizza is now filled with racist shit.

I'm also used to the stupid ass local racism of nextdoor. But now I'm seeing more right wing meme BS.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 23 hours ago

Nextdoor has always been trash. Full of paranoid people reinforcing their delusions, seeing grand conspiracies behind every person in their neighborhood they don't recognize.

[–] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

“Users on Elon Musk’s X were the biggest culprits”

To the surprise of no one.

[–] slykethephoxenix@lemmy.ca 1 points 16 hours ago

They were also the most aware of conspiracies, if you read the report.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Three guys are the entire comments section on Globe and Mail and CBC articles.

Still fixated on Trudeau and a stage show, and his socks.

[–] L_N@piefed.ca 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Can we act against these accounts en masse please?

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

They've got support from Musk and Zuckerberg so that means banning their platforms

[–] vogo13@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

I've been advocating this for quite a while. I'm honestly confused as to what Canadians are doing and it seems their words are not matching the actions. "Perfect is the enemy of good" they say, which allows them to be complacent and utilize things like social media en-masse, even though the delete button is free and will actually clear your mind to disconnect from those platforms. Please tell me honestly, for example is LinkedIn still expected for tech/adjacent workers in Canada? These are plain and simply propaganda platforms, they are all designed to manipulate minds in precisely the way Orwell or Huxley had predicted. Including dating platforms.

"When you believe a lie for too long, the truth doesn't set you free. It tears you apart."

[–] fourish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I’m so okay with that. Not doing it means weakening our democracy.

[–] L_N@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago

We should have no problems doing this

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

How do they get this data. Isn't it stuff that is collected so it's not even a full set of data. It's just a collection that some amazing people were able to pull since Facebook locks down their api

There is a well-established “perception gap” between what we think others believe and what they actually believe. A recent poll by ReClimate found that 42 per cent of Canadians think about addressing climate change at least weekly, and yet they believe only 26 per cent of their neighbours do the same. Similarly, research has found as many as 89 per cent of people want more action on climate change — yet those 89 per cent tend to believe they’re in the minority.

So many people shit on me here in lemmy for saying this, but we have to do better. We have to nut the fuck up and deal with this. Instead of the exodus off these social media platforms, we need to be the ones drowning them the fuck out. Who cares if they're owned by who. It's all still works based on numbers. We need numbers to identify problems and combat the spread of this. That's how we all felt back in the day. Defeat misinformation by engaging with it. Somewhere along the line we were all convinced to ignore it which only allowed it to spread more rapidly.

If they want to fuck around, we're suppose to be the tech literate. We need grass roots networks and forums identifying the leaders and these small number of problem users and we need to make it as difficult as we can for them to work.

[–] Murdoc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not just numbers though, is it? There's that algorithm thing they use to steer things. Otherwise in principle I agree wirh you.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

But it is numbers. It's always been about numbers. Humans are social creatures. We see everybody agreeing about something, we tend to also agree. It's a weird phenomenon that has research behind it. It's not like you or I are going to become Trump supporters because we see everybody agreeing with him. There are somethings that are immovable. But many opinions are movable and in those areas this groups are attempting to get numbers. It should be met with an equal and greater force. At the same time we need to quit being defensive and go back on the offensive. We should be creating groups and building networks. The algorithms do respond.
