Those guys are just assholes that drive their own half million euro vehicles to demonstrate their poorness.

And while it might be getting harder the way they demand money will mainly benefit the already richest farmers so the situation of the worst will get worse.

I am getting on the verge of saying it... Damn I'll say it anyway:

Fuck EU farmers! They get 31% of the EU budget and basically live of that, don't create any high value jobs, and still manage to complain about a geopolitically crucial trade agreement.

At the same time, it's a fickle industry. Some years, your crops barely materialize. Then environmental regulations change and you need to make major investments to keep your farm running. Etc.

Since it's also where our food comes from, I'm not too angry about them getting a bunch of money.

We waste one third of production either on production site or along the supply chain and we give a lot of money for production that are unnecessary.

Believe me, I am Italian, we get 323 Mโ‚ฌ for wine production and 60% of our export is still shitty Prosecco.

That is the kind of bullshit the sector relies on.

Oh sweet summer child when they say โ€œsubsidies for farmersโ€ they donโ€™t mean farmers growing food, they mean animal slavers.

Those are especially hard hit by chance happenings though? Sometimes they have to kill all the animals because of a disease.

[โ€“] amzd@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They actually kill all the animals all the time

Okay, economics aren't actually something you're interested in, only veganism. Which is fine, it's the morally correct choice, but I thought we were out here discussing the economic realities of being a farmer and why they may need government subsidies in general.

[โ€“] amzd@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Youโ€™re right that my belief that killing is immoral means I automatically think killers are unsuitable recipients of government subsidies.

If that money would go to create a next gen agriculture, it could be a great investment. I mean things like cellular agriculture, cultured meat, precision fermentation, generally more non-animal foods.

[โ€“] biofaust@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

The people we are giving money to harshly counter most of those things, especially cultured meat and insect-based food.

And if AI comes and takes my job? Iโ€™ll just be jobless.. we all have to adapt, so do farmers. But indo understand we donโ€™t want another big dependency and that we need to keep our own farms working
