!madeineurope@lemmy.zip: A community dedicated to talking about, discovering, flaunting and discussing consumer products that are made in Europe by European companies.

I created this community because the most popular communities like !buyeuropean@feddit.uk, !BuyFromEU@europe.pub or !buyfromeu@feddit.org are overrun by news articles about European governmental policies, trade deals, fighter jet purchases or tech news. These kinds of posts are banned from !madeineurope@lemmy.zip. I want to see your cool socks, clothes, hot sauces, slippers or kitchen equipment made right here in Europe. The more local, niche, artisanal, environmentally friendly and socially responsible, the better.

Ireland and Scotland don't count, of course.

My recent faves:

  • Kyrö from Finland: they exclusively make rye whiskies. I already bought 3 of their 4 expressions. My favorite is Wood Smoke. Powerful smoky character from alder-smoked malts, sun dried plums and lots of character.

  • Ninkasi from France: one of the oldest breweries from the Craft Beer Revival started distilling about 5 years ago with a cognac still. Lots of great finishes, my favorite is Manifesto, finished in Pineau des Charentes casks. Massive old wine and must character.

What are yours?

Hi All,

Focusing on privacy and open standards, can anyone suggest network elements from switches routers to IoT like doorbells and lights.

One of the very few Dutch bike manufacturers who still make them in the Netherlands

Hello, i am working in a cinema and we are trying to replace the snacks we have with european and maybe a little more fair alternatives. What we are still struggling with are chips like pringles and M&Ms. We tried to replace pringles with the brand "kesselchips" once, but it proved to be not very economical as people didn't buy it for a long period of time. Do you have other ideas on what snacks to use as alternative that might be a bit more similar in the looks? (For example coke is pretty easy as fritz-cola looks and sounds very similar in name)

I've been wearing Calvin Klein shorts for years, they were durable and nice. Now I'm looking for a European alternative with an emphasis on quality.

Duralex glasses are beautiful. They have clear "made in France" at the bottom. We bought a few colourful ones back to England when we visited France last year.

Charentaises (litteraly, "from Charente", a departement and historical region in southwestern France) are slippers with a long history dating back to the 17th century. Traditionally entirely made of wool, from the felt upper to the chain stitched sole, they're super warm, fuzzy, soft and comfortable.

Their warmth made them popular to withstand chilly winter evenings in the countryside, and their soft soles made them common with servants who needed to move silently on hardwood floors. The current form, with a tartan felt upper and made in the cousu-retourné technique, dates back to the early 20th century. Yes, they can be quite kitsch, and lost popularity in the '80s. If the kitsch appeal of slippers identical to those worn by our great-grandparents doesn't resonate with you, there are also more modern variants, with a wider variety of graphics, materials (linen, velvet, fake fur etc.) and colors.

As I saw them as "those old-fashioned slippers worn by my grandfather", I would have never considered them until I tried a pair at a friend's house. They are super comfortable and warm, and they are so soft and lightweight they very quickly mold to your feet and feel like barefoot shoes. I now feel they have a "so ugly they're cool" vibe to them, like Birkenstocks. If it hasn't changed in a century, it's because it already achieved perfection. And who knows, maybe some day they'll become fashionable again.

Three real Charentaises manufacturers still exist today, who still make them by hand in the traditional way in France:

  • Rondinaud, near Angoulême in the historical manufacturing region of Charente
  • Fargeot, in the neighbouring departement of Dordogne
  • Rivalin further away in Brittany

If you're looking for a holiday gift idea for yourself or someone with cold feet to face the winter months, they're amazing!

I live in a very rainy place (esp in the autumn and winter), and since i started cycling to work I ruined 2 pairs of shoes in the rain.

Do you guys have recommandations for sneakers which look like actual sneakers but are 100% waterproof (not just water resistant)?

Bonus points will be awarded for sustainable and traceable supply chains 😅

So i need some input.
I think to replace my unify gear for european / open source one.

And i heavily hesitate between an opensource router with opnsense (from eu).

Or a mikrotik router.

Can any #network or #mikrotik #opensense #pfsense user give me any input.

Also does the one you own provide update / system update to EU server (even as mirror).

i need multiple wifi AP that share the same network

Thanks

Today I found out about a German electronics brand named Hama, but I haven't heard anyone ever mention/recommend it to replace American products.. so is this brand just unknown or is something wrong with it?

Mantas de Grazalema is a Spanish artisanal brand based in Grazalema (Cádiz, Spain), specializing in high-quality wool blankets and textiles made with traditional craftsmanship.

Their products — including blankets, rugs, cushions, and bedding — are crafted from natural Merino wool, reflecting local heritage and sustainable production. Perfect for those seeking authentic European craftsmanship.

Because somehow aircraft carrier sales are related to "buying european" let's have an actual consumer focused thread.

Here are some European wool sock models. In some cases the "made in" country is not specified, but at the very least the company should (I didn't delve super deep to check the ownership structure, feel free to call me out) be European.

The list should contain models with 70%+ wool. Most have synthetics mixed in because without it socks rip very fast, it's not for cost saving.

Name Note
Woolpower 200/400/600/800 Made in Sweden. Sold on bike24 too. Woolpower has a contract with the Swedish millitary
Varusteleka L2 Made in Finland, wool staple length provided
Pedemeia 100% Merino Made in not specified, likely Portugal though. For those that haven't learned their lesson that 100% wool socks desintegrate after 5 wears due to no synthetics for durability
Falke Teppich im Schuh Made in not specified and support isn't responding to me lol, Falke is German but I'm 99% sure it's not made there
Devold Nansen Made in not specified, also is on bike24
Aclima Norwegian wool socks Made in not specified, about us page says all production takes place in Europe, mostly in Estonia
Rohner Original Swiss company, made in Portugal
Wowerat Note that this is a wholesaler, you'll have to find a distributor yourself (Brubaker?) some models made in Germany, I'm only mentioning it because it has some 100% wool models
kopyto.co Made in Poland, certified mulesing-free
Calzedonia Wool/Cotton (just 55% wool) Made in Croatia, Cotton on inside, wool on outside. They pill a lot. Calzedonia still does business in Russia
Heprom "Eskimo Socks" Made "in Europe" (see pic of back), company is from Denmark

Zalando also has a "100% wool" filter if you care: https://en.zalando.de/mens-clothing-socks/?upper_material=pure_wool

There's also Burlington, Corgi and Mes Chausettes Rouges but that's luxury-ish I guess

Ofttopic, but my Fairphone was shipped back to me from warranty repair today :) (mic broke)
