Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Kirk's shooter, Tyler Robinson, has apparently turned himself in, apparently after confessing to his own father (?)

I've tried to capture the relevant bits of this extremely rapidly updating and currently in progress series of events.

9 a.m. EDT

While appearing on Fox and Friends, Trump said “I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody.”

Trump said authorities acted after receiving a tip from a minister who recognized the suspect from the images released by law enforcement.

The president said he believed the suspect’s father was also involved in arrest, but added that this information was still preliminary and the details could change.

9:15 a.m. EDT

Trump said he would attend a funeral next week for Kirk, “who should not be having a funeral right now,” when asked about his scheduled trip to the U.K. from Sept. 16-18.

9:30 a.m. EDT

The suspect was identified as Tyler Robinson, 22, from Utah, according to multiple reports citing people with knowledge of the investigation.

10:10 a.m. EDT

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed in a press conference Friday morning that a suspect named Tyler Robinson has been detained.

Apologies for this being a paywalled Forbes article.

Licks eyeballs

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 12 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Did you bring enough eyeballs for everyone to lick? If not, put them in the trash.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 months ago

Fun fact I had a teacher say this to me about my trail mix for while I was waiting to be picked up, I wasn't even in first grade or anything I think it was the grade before middle school. I threw a chair at her, got expelled, fuck that school and the a teacher.

I guess at least vegan has dropped out of the rotation, lol... oi vei...

[–] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 5 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

He could be antifa, or at least a radicalized nihilist with those sympathies. He did etch into his bullets a mix of furry memes and anti-fascist messaging.

Or maybe he did this as part of a dollar store false flag operation, because he is a far-right extremist. We just don't have enough information to be certain, yet.

I will say that he certainly fits the profile of a right ring terrorist: young, white male, Christian, proficient marksman, terminally online, and the son of a long time police officer.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

The anti-fascist messages were quotes from video games (Helldivers and Far Cry), so maybe he means it or maybe just more memes, hard to say.

[–] circuscritic@lemmy.ca 4 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

He also quoted an old Italian anti-fascist song, Bella Ciao.

Whether he's an anarchist, Marxist, or Nazi, it's clear he was terminally online and steeped in meme culture.

Of course, that's about as helpful these days as saying someone uses dating apps.

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Bella Ciao was featured in Far Cry, which I am guessing is where he heard it. That doesn't mean he doesn't know it's an anti-fascist song, though.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 50 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Lol.

The cucks over at /r/cuckservative started celebrating in a post when reports that the suspect was caught started coming in. Now that we know it was a law enforcement officer's kid raised in a MAGA family they're cannibalizing each other and there's a shit ton of deleted comments and crybabies refusing to accept reality, per usual.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Sorry I am now almost 3 years clean from reddit, you mean /r/conservative, or is there an actual /r/cuckservative, which is funny because of double meta irony or something?

Either way, screencaps would be appreciated =D

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 13 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure they're just referring to conservative, but man there really should be a cuckservative community.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (3 children)

I think there is a 'conservative' comm somewhere on lemmy... it was apparently orginally run genuienly... and then the mod quit... and then I think somebody else 'adopted' it... and then ran it as a parody.

Onr could say interest in the community seems pretty dead, lost its lifeblood.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I think satansmagottycumfart took ownership of it. It was so funny

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 months ago

Well, I'll be, bless his twisted little dead heart, ahahaha!

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

I think the genuine conservative com is conservative2

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

Where, in classic "freezepeach" fashion, they lock comments on a bunch of their posts

[–] rozodru@piefed.social 39 points 5 months ago (2 children)

EVERY. TIME. it's revealed that the shooter is MAGA it's always funny to stroll into /r/conservative or twitter or other places like and then watch the userbase go from cheering to proceeding to consume each others flesh. happens every time. A few start questioning their "faith" and which brings on others to begin to feast or start accusing people of being fake and then comments get deleted, threads get removed. every time.

And each time none of them are capable of taking a step back and asking "are we the baddies?"

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Well, 71% of political killings in the US comes from the right. 26% comes from Muslims. Only 3% comes from the left. Go figure.

Yes, these are official US government figures. Taken down shortly after publication...

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

Pretty sure he's an undeclared voter that hasn't voted in the past two elections. I think his family is MAGA, but I don't actually think that means he leans MAGA. It could be that he finally reached a breaking point and flipped to the other side, I don't think we know.

Edit: nvm, I was wrong.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

No. He was spouting groyper memes.

He’s a right-winger.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

What's groyper? Sorry for my ignorance.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 7 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Antisemitc white nationalist Nick Fuentes alt-righter.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago

Ah, I'd heard his name but never really looked into him — I take back what I said.

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 39 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (2 children)

Huh, you know there was a time where they didn't want to put the shooter's name in print and headlines after school shooting because they were worried about copycats. It was quickly abandoned because the Press are fucking monsters. I'm surprised they didn't go back to that logic today though.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 5 months ago

More blood for the blood gods, apparently.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 9 points 5 months ago

Somebody realized they get a spike in traffic whenever there's a shooting or something along those lines. Fresh blood keeps the ad revenue flowing.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 37 points 5 months ago (1 children)

While appearing on Fox and Friends, Trump said “I think, with a high degree of certainty, we have him in custody.”

In a country with a functioning justice system, that would have gotten the guy a mistrial at least. But we don’t have to worry about things like Law anymore, right Justice Boof?

[–] threeonefour@piefed.ca 7 points 5 months ago

He hasn't even been arraigned yet. I'm sure his lawyers would bring this up. Luigi's lawyers did the same, as would any lawyer when their client is talked about on the news before a jury is selected.

[–] KneeTitts@lemmy.world 16 points 5 months ago

Insane gun culture combined with religious indoctrination before kindergarten leads to child terrorists.. no one is shocked

[–] sanpedropeddler@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 months ago (3 children)

The details of this are so stupid I don't want to believe it. I don't want to jump straight to conspiracies before I really know much either, but seriously?

Maybe I just imagine political assassins to be more careful and intentional than they really are.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Assassinating someone means like a 99.99% chance of completely ruining your life and really fucking up the life of everyone you love. The truth is that almost nobody is noble and brave enough to do this just because they think it's for a good cause. Less than one in a million people have that kind of conviction, period, for any reason. Now how many of them have that kind of conviction for healthy well-adjusted reasons? I would bet almost none of them. There are like 50 roads to travel to end up as a political assassin. Half of them involve doing it for your job, like with the government assassinating its enemies. The other half involve you bring completely insane or delusional. There's literally like 1 road that is the road of just being so selflessly convicted in your beliefs that you are willing to ruin your entire existence for your cause (and this is regardless of whether your cause is actually good or not). I think this is why Luigi has stuck out as so powerful to people, because he may actually be a very very rare example of someone who derived their strong conviction without the aid of mental unwellness. (But even he got caught, so...) So yeah, I think most of the unpaid assassins are probably not mentally 100% solid lol. The fact is it is pretty much insane to decide to kill people, so it's pretty much insane people that are killing people.

[–] jwiggler@sh.itjust.works 10 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

100%. You bring up some great points.

I have nothing to add, except I think Emma Goldman has a really good essay on political violence I think everyone should read. (though, not sure it very much applies to this particular act of political violence)

https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/goldman/works/1917/political-violence.htm

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 12 points 5 months ago

The political assassins that dont get caught also make their assassinations not look like assassinations.

From what I am hearing from Kyle Kulinski...

The kid is very academically bright, possibly autistic, obviously into online uwu meme culture... appears to be from a well-off Republican family, which involved a good deal of being raised with guns, definitely is not registered as a Democrat, may have himself donated to Trump's campaign, wore a Trump costume to a Halloween party... and also wrote Bella Ciao lyrics on a casing.

So... I am going with 'very confused, nerdy, ancap kid with above average marksman skills for someone his age and no military training'.

... But thats all extremely speculative at this point.

He appears to have literally done this for the lulz, and then become overwhelmed with guilt.

I do not know what to make out of this other than our society is doomed.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 9 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I would be incredibly wary of any descriptions of his character or any details that aren't easily corroborated by trusted sources. There is a LOT of misinformation out there.

https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:2jaemvpgujnb5nzi66rcxhse/post/3lynjvt3yyx2q is a good breakdown which is as cited as anything gets these days.

Which lines up with what many others are saying: He is a "groyper" and seemed more alligned with the fuentes alt-right than the kirk alt-right and this seems like the sadly logical outcome of heavily armed children getting radicalized every second of the day.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I will literally go back and bold the part where I said 'this is all speculative.'

I guess I trust Kyle when it comes to actually sourcing things.

But yeah, lets get as much citations and context as possible, now that this is a few hours older and more is being written.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

People are deeply stupid. Even "This is pure speculation" rapidly becomes Fact through the game of telephone. It is best to avoid it as much as possible in situations like this. Even "he might have been autistic" very clearly lines up with certain fascist agendas.

I won't be surprised if he used fediverse/Lemmy do we know what his major is?

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Oh god please don't say that, this reeeeally does not need to be the way normies learn about lemmy/fediverse oooh no.

His major?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2025/09/12/what-we-know-charlie-kirk-shooting-suspect/86091474007/

In August 2020, Amber Robinson posted what appears to be an ACT college aptitude test score for Tyler – 34 out of 36 – that would place him in the top 1% of test takers, according to recent averages.

Tyler wore a Trump-related Halloween costume in 2017, according to Amber’s social media.

The eldest Robinson son graduated from Pine View High School in St. George in 2021, according to Amber Robinson's social media. The high school did not immediately respond to an inquiry from USA TODAY.

Tyler is photographed at Utah State University and was offered an academic scholarship to attend the Logan, Utah-based university according to a letter he read aloud in a video posted to Amber’s social media.

Utah State University said the suspected shooter "briefly attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021."

He lived at home with his parents, according to neighbors who spoke with USA TODAY.

Undetermined.

He... seems like he dropped out, or more like bounced off of going to college... ???

Yeah... certainly looking like some kind of perma online, basement dwelling, probably autisitc, uber dork.

Which I say lovingly, in reference to most of us here.

But yeah... If he bounced off after one semester, he would not have even gotten to declaring a major, I don't think.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 5 months ago

Oh god please don't say that, this reeeeally does not need to be the way normies learn about lemmy/fediverse oooh no.

R***it already did that, the antinatalist guy did it for the rest, so far.

[–] PriorityMotif@lemmy.world 2 points 5 months ago

I seriously hope that he doesn't have some kind of mental health issue because Kennedy will have a big excuse to come after anyone who has a mental health diagnosis no matter how minor their condition is.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 4 points 5 months ago

Doesn't look anything like him.

[–] GenesisClimber@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 months ago

You know the likes of Facebook, X and LinkedIn like it because traffic explodes by people trying to see if they know the person, or know of people who know them, or any of their digital footprint.
